A dj named Smooth Cinnamon X mashed up this version with the Billie Holiday version. It was ❤ at first listen. Many years later I found Ross' version alone on a bootleg. ❤❤❤ in love. If I'm forced to find a complaint has to be I need more. It ends much too soon.

Sorry for the slow response! Here's 1 textbook-take: "Banda is a dance for the Haitian Gede. Spirits whose manifestations and movement make known their abilities. to take life, heal, and create laughter." (So, ...it's possible that she is possessed more/rather than suicidal.)

@artist: Holder played Baron Samedi here - the *loa* of Death. He always wears a top hat. (There's a similar loa, Baron Cimitiere, but I honestly don't know enough to say anything per whether there are 2 names for the same entity, or if BC is another facet of Baron Samedi altogether, or an entirely different loa.) At any rate, it's not suprising that BS appears to Carmen de Lavallade in this scene. (She was married to Holder and they danced together frequently.) The cast list for the show is a Who's Who of the best Black actors, dancers, singers, choreographers, etc. of the era. Diahann Carroll made her Broadway debut in this show. ("A Sleepin' Bee" was her big number, though it's mainly associated with Barbra Streisand today.) I hope this is helpful. :)

Really? I did a few searches and that's how I found most of what's in my previous comment. I knew Holder had to be Baron asamedi from his costume, his walk (BS is an elderly man), and other attributes. Geoffrey Holder's best-known film role is Baron Samedi in the Bond film Live and Let Die.
