If this series was actually that difficult to understand, i would say don't bother and learn another language instead. But really, it's not. Just go for it. Hell, in some ways, it's easier than other fantasy books to understand. The themes tend to be very easy to understand, for example.

Do you live in Sweden or why did you choose a Swedish translation of the Iliad in particular? I might try to read that translation if I can find it. Reading Titus Groan, the first book of the Gormenghast trilogy at the moment.

Great video! Growing up as a kid i experienced fantasy and other worlds with books, tv, and video games. Some things that come to mind are tv shows like Dragontales. Books such as the Magic Tree House series, Michigan Chillers series (set in real Michigan towns but has many fantastical and supernatural elements), Deltora Quest series, Guardians of Ga’Hooole series, The Edge Chronicles. Some video games were all the Mario games and that world, the Ratchet and Clank series, and Pokémon were big for me. Thinking about all of these things has me wanting to watch, read, and play all these again. Hope you enjoy the rest of your day!

The LOTR movies really influenced me as a child watching them in theaters and it ignited my passion for fantasy. I used to read lots of fantasy books in middle school. Recently, after playing through BG3 now as an adult, I got back into reading fantasy snd it's like falling in love all over again. I think it's so interesting that two friends who used to role olay together now write fantasy books for the same universe. I wonder how they avoid overlaps or stepping on each other's toes within their stories. Definitely plan on looking into these two books. Thank you so much!

Great video and very fun and interesting topic! I consume fantasy mostly through video games, books, and table top RPGs (primarily D&D). For most of my life, I'd say that video games have been my primary form of fantasy, but now reading is become more dominant for me. Which pathfinder video game are you playing? Kingmaker or Wrath of the Righteous by chance?

Impeccable advice

I definitely agree with you that there are several different types of violence in fantasy, and I think it can have a variety of purposes depending on how it is written. One book series that comes to mind is the Poppy War series, which I think does a really good job of illustrating the horrors of war and some of the horrors that have occurred in our world history. Other times, when not written in a brutal/grim dark fashion, violence can look or feel cool, especially when it's in a clear good vs. bad situation, like the heroic way characters in the Lord of the Rings fight orcs.

Great video! I remember in school having to read the epics Gilgamesh and Beowulf, which I think could be good mythology stories to start with, in the same vein of the Odyssey or Illiad. Another book I really enjoyed was The Book of Yokai by Michael Dylan Foster. It starts out by describing what yokai are, what they mean to Japanese culture (current and historically) and some interpretations of them. Then it goes into a sort of beastiology of yokai. I've been meaning to read Gaimen's Norse Mythology, and hope to do so this year.

I have to get that Tolkien sources book. Sounds like a great resource for fantasy writers

thank you very much, I don't think it will help me cause the books you mentioned are too heavy for a beginner in mythologies. You mentioned that in order to get into the world of mythology, it is good to start by reading one's own culture as it also is a kind of mythology. How is this so? I think mythology includes gods, super powers and miracles, if I'm not wrong. By the way, I've downloaded the mahabharata book, it's quite long but for sure will give it a try. I am reading all this along with malazan is just because I want to grasp the actual lessons that need to be learnt from novels bc I think now when I read them, I just read the book and enjoy the story , but don't digest the lessons it teaches. Hope getting into mythological reading will improve some how. Thank you

I’ve actually been looking online the last few days for Native American mythology books, particularly the Great Lakes region which is where I am from and live. Currently re reading Hyperion by Dan Simmons. One of my favorites.

I recently finished Circe by Madeline Miller, which is a great and different perspective on some of the Greek heroes and mythological characters from the Odyssey. I also finished Snuff by Terry Pratchett, the final book in his Discworld City Watch series, which was amazing and fun. Im currently reading Malice by John Gwynne and re-reading Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets.

I was thinking about Amber when reading about the Deck Of Dragons. I think it is brilliantly made. I must say that spiritually is everywhere in Malazan for me. Especially after reading The Kharkanas books. Some may not see it that way but it's like science and philosophy, connecting to the unknown and always questions pondering. Learning that Steven Erikson has played civ makes me so happy

Will you plz plz make a separate video on each of the chapters of the malazan books not reading but just discussing what's happening in the chapters. Many times we just get lost in the chapters and it takes more than 5 reads to understand what's going on even then we don't get the complete feel of what's actually going on.
