    so what would be so wrong with using modern sleeves for an arming cote ?

    • @monkeywithaspanner8494
      @monkeywithaspanner8494 6 месяцев назад

      It's not "wrong", but there are other ways to do it. Medieval clothing has a different aesthetic to modern, western clothing. If you want to emulate that style, you need to do what they did, not what they did in a movie. More importantly, everyone I know who used sleeves with a modern cut (by which I mean, designed to hang by your sides), has torn the lower and back seams open, when they use it in action. There just isn't enough material to allow that kind of movement. The seams are the weak link and they rip at the point of most strain. Modern sleeves are designed to look fashionable whilst you stand casually, at rest. Sleeves designed for movement are cut to be in the position they will be during that movement, not when at rest. So in this case, raised and in front.

    Why were some plackarts rigidly attached to the breast plate? Wouldn't doing this reduce range of motion and present the risk of the top of the breast plate pressing into the neck with forward bending motions? Wouldn't it also be easier to just make one large breast plate instead of riveting the two pieces together? I know this was done sometimes, I'm just wondering why. Two separate pieces attached with a leather strap makes more sense to me.

    • @monkeywithaspanner8494
      @monkeywithaspanner8494 Год назад

      Good question. I regularly wore a single piece breast plate and single piece back plate, so have a lot of experience with that style. I can't say it was much of a problem, except in extreme movement, which was rare. Most fighting takes place within a certain range of movement and as long as the armour accommodates that, it doesn't impinge on your abilities. Also, modern fashion tends to put the waistline lower than most medieval fashion. The breast and back should be more like an armoured rib-cage than an armoured jacket. A short breast and back massively reduces the problem of it pushing up into your throat. Many reproduction breast plates are too long and so, suffer from just that problem. As for the ease of manufacture, certainly it is quicker to make a single plate than the form two separate plates and marry them together, but you must remember, not all of this is driven by practicality. Fashion and peer pressure is just as important now as it was then, so do you want to depart from the norm or look like your mates? Also, fashions change and so did this trend in later years. As for the benefits of a two piece construction, over a one piece, a two piece has much more articulation and some areas of double layer protection. The ball and socket design works well and provides good protection. The single piece, if designed and made to fit, should not be much of a hindrance, but can give a different aesthetic. I hope that helps...

    How thick is that metal?. I'd guess it could be around 1,5mm ?

    • @monkeywithaspanner8494
      @monkeywithaspanner8494 2 года назад

      Kevin, on original medieval pieces, the metal can vary greatly on a single piece, as it is hammered by hand and can vary dramatically; sometimes deliberately, other times not so. Armour is usually thicker on pieces that are more likely to be hit and thicker on the section of that single piece that is more likely to be hit. For example, a helm will probably be thickest at the crown of the forehead, but relatively thin at the nape of the neck. Also, cuisse can be quite thin in places, because it is unlikely (though not impossible) you will receive a powerful blow to the thigh. We constantly come back to the point of compromise; how much protection do you want, vs. how much mobility do you want. Greater protection comes with greater weight, but mobility or lightness, reduces protection. So, what do you want, protection or mobility? Most find a point in the middle that suits them. So, in the thickest parts, it could be greater than 3mm, but at the thinnest, maybe less than 1mm. Don't forget, thickness does not equate to hardness, so it's a bit more complicated than just adding more steel.

    • @Annatar0
      @Annatar0 2 года назад

      @@monkeywithaspanner8494 yeah you are absolutely right and there were different usages for different types of armor too, combat, entertainment and fashion. The Wallace Collection has some interesting armor to look at here on youtube but none speaks of how thick the armor pieces are.

    • @monkeywithaspanner8494
      @monkeywithaspanner8494 2 года назад

      @@Annatar0 That's right. You aren't expected to wear sports armour for as long as you might be expected to wear battlefield armour, so you can stand more weight for a shorter time. Also the targets are much more specific and regulated, so you can be very specific with sports armour. I am very good friends with the arms and armour curator at the Wallace, I'll mention your observation to him, but do remember, thickness is only part of the equation and is not to be taken independently of form, hardness and function.
