There was no rehearsal? It is a sandwich concert. Someone should have brought her the concerto part for the piano. Good that she is briliant and managed to overcome this crazy mistake of the production team
What a maestro, the way he did deal with that situation and led Maria João Pires to believe in herself perform well! Both made this an example we should never forget.
It’s impressive, but the less music you know, the more impressed you will be by it. Most professional concert pianists specialize in 1, 2, or a few composers, yet virtually all of them having relatively strong familiarity with the core repertoire not pertaining to their speciality. On top of that, virtually every major pianist has had Bach and Mozart as the foundation of everything they do. Now take Maria Jao Pires’ case: a) Mozart specialist; b) Mozart Concerto #20 is widely regarded as Mozart’s greatest concerto, so it is the epitome of “core repertoire” studied by every pianist; c) Bach and Mozart are the foundations of all other musical study, for classical pianists. By the time this mishap occurred, she’d probably performed this 50+ times in public and recorded it at least twice. So when you put all this together, it was pretty inevitable that she would know the concerto well enough to perform it, after getting over the shock and bewilderment.

She was asked to step in at the last minute to replace another soloist. On the phone call she misheard the Kochel number and thought she was performing a concerto she had played recently. The actual piece they performed she had played about 11 months prior so she was really relying on muscle memory and instinct. She talks about it at length in an interview with Classic FM which can be found on RUclips.,
Ugh, my own heart sank when I saw this. I've been in an orchestra when the pianist stopped mid concert to tell the conductor he messed up and wanted to start over. Our conductor told him to pick it up again because he wasn't going to start over. I felt bad, everyone felt bad... imagine the pianist at that time. This is such a brilliant save.
What happened to their rehearsal? Did they not have the rehearsal and talk about the concerto prior to the concert? I find it hard to believe that this mistake would be just an accident.
@@bendorsey5410 What do you even mean about "dress rehearsal"? This is not a theater, this is a concert 🤦♀ Yes, there are always several rehearsals before the performance, and usually everyone attends, but not always. I sang in a choir and my cousin helped our orchestra out when we needed mor violins. He plays in the National Festival Orchestra and he only came to the performance, he didn't want to waste his time with rehearsals. These professionals are given the music and they play it like nothing. This is not a common practice, but can happen more often than you think.
@@verabolton Clearly you don't know what you're talking about. There are dress rehearsals at classical concerts. I'm a professional musician, and while maybe *some* performances can be done without a dress rehearsal, it is highly uncommon. There are adjustments made for things like acoustics and lighting where playing in the venue is necessary. Also, an orchestra needs to get the feel of a soloist and vice versa. This particular performance was a last minute change to a very casual performance. Otherwise, there are dress rehearsals. You don't have to believe me, as a professional musician, but you can find another and ask them. Don't embarrass yourself further and educate yourself.
The exact nightmare every stage artist has dreamed at least once at night. Not only is she able to JUST recall from memory, her "I try" is more than many others ever achieve.
The same thing happened to An Tianxu a few years ago in Tchaikovsky competition, except he had 0.5 seconds to respond! He was expecting Tchaikovsky 1 and got Paganini Rhapsody (which had an octave right at the beginning). He nailed the concerto at the end and got fourth place.
Totally amazing!!! I would say "unbelievable", but hearing is believing! :-)
😮😢
Why is there no footage of the moment the orchestra starts playing? All the clips I’ve seen of this start some time into the piece.
The instant before she played the first notes she was an extraordinary pianist. The moment afterwards she became a legend.

I hope she speaks to a therapist after that 😅 very beautiful piano entrance, bravo.
I am so very happy I play jazz 😂

@@phenolyat Nope. You can see the audience in the background. Professional musicians don't always do rehearsals.
There wasn't a dress rehearsal??
She was called in last minute to cover for someone else. Answered my own question :)
