Why do Redditors hate Epomaker?
!!! Disclaimer !!!
This is the second time that Epomaker has sent me their product to review. Why didn’t I do this piece on them the first time? Well, like I said in the video, I center my videos around an idea and the idea back then was simply to gift my friend a modded TH80 so I didn’t really read that much into it when I came across some negative news back then. Like how there are bound to be some bad apples in every product release, I thought this one was no different and just shrugged it off. And boy was I wrong.

    I've been pretty deep into this hobby for over 2 years, just getting going when all the KS stuff was happening with Epomaker so I heard a lot of the stories right after they happened. I also do reviews for a retailer and have reviewed quite a number of their keyboard and purchased a few for myself. What I have noticed is the IMHO their keyboards have consistently gotten better in numerous areas. I'll admit I've never had an issue needing to call CS nor done a KS with them... I have done some KS, some were good another others were a nightmare. Many companies have done some pretty shady things and there are few I would "trust." For right now though I've not had any issues the past couple of years and I for one I'm willing to sit back and hope Epomaker continues to do better.

      At times I suspect it's the case of disgruntled customers having a louder voice. I looked up Geekhack, which is a forum for seriously enthusiastic keyboard hobbyists, and there was nearly no mention of Epomaker and their deeds, good nor bad. But the biggest sign that something has gone majorly wrong is when Reddit banned them off their site completely. Some people got REALLY pissed off for that to happen.

    Seeing how many review units are being sent out by Epomaker to keyboard influencers, they appear to care so much about their reputation, other than their customers lol

    • @benfromsg
      @benfromsg День назад

      I disagree, reaching out to influencers is just a form of marketing campaign. And admittedly they do a better job at keeping reviewers satisfied since we are the ones recommending and/or bashing products. It's just that the other aspects of their brand image need work.

    • @JegsUniverse
      @JegsUniverse 10 часов назад

      That’s probably the case. I failed to realize that their marketing campaign is one aspect to look for. Nevertheless, reviewers may be satisfied of the board itself but not the company that white labels and ships them.

    i have ordered mine, how did it end up being more quiet than stock when you removed the foam layers? im not techy but wouldn't that make it louder? or is that because you changed the switches?

    • @benfromsg
      @benfromsg 23 дня назад

      Don't worry about it! The lowered volume is due to the sheer amount of flex cuts on the plate AND on the PCB. It didn't matter which switches I used (long poles are a tad better), most of the switches are horribly muted. Using foams cancelled the flex cuts out because everything gets "fixed" in place. If you don't like the foamy sound but want a loud volume still, you can still take the foams out and then tape up the flex cuts. That will do the job too.

    The only issue is that a kalam could be sold as if it's legit for $2k, but it's really a self made problem. Scalpers charging $2k for a $500 keyboard don't deserve respect, neither do people buying them enabling this scalper behavior. Barely anyone who wants a tgr, singa, keycult etc. board can get them for non-scalper prices, it's near impossible, this is because everyone wants one to resell. If you couldn't resell a jane or keycult or unikorn for 4x what you paid, there would be much less demand. So all of this is a problem they made for themselves and I have 0 issues buying a kalam. I'm not enabling a scalper and never winning a raffle, so it's no loss to anyone.

    • @benfromsg
      @benfromsg 23 дня назад

      Prices have come down quite a bit from the time I made this video and also from the COVID dark days. There are still weirdly hyped boards like Kohaku of course, but the thing about Kalam is, they don't just pirate boards that are "rare", if you so call these boards. They only pirate the popular, trendy and high in demand ones that give the best ROI i.e. money grabbing just like scalpers. You don't see Kalam Geist or Kalam Werk One or Kalam Iron165 right? Kalam, as much as people are putting the brand to be THE heroic face of pulling prices down, isn't all that glamourous a brand when you think about it. They are in it for the money too. Sure, it may have started off as that but, the days of needing to pirate is long gone.

    • @incongruous4
      @incongruous4 23 дня назад

      @@benfromsg Definitely, I get where you're coming from. These days the entry level boards are so high quality, there's no need to spend that type of money. Even "mid level" boards like graystudio, ai03, etc. offerings are no worse in quality or design and have more features than a keycult or tgr's outdated designs. We've even seen tgr make widely available boards like tomo and jane me that no ones trying to flip. It's only their exclusive limited run raffle boards that everyone obsesses over and flips for 5x. Tgr is clearly capable of making unikorns or kohakus widely available but chooses not to, as does keycult as a business move. I view this as fake designer clothes or fake rolex watches. I don't think highly of people who make them. I think they're shady. But, if I really, really like a design, like I love the hk edition unikorn, I'd rather pay 350 for a clone than 4.5k for the real thing off a flipper who paid 550. If I could buy it for retail price from singa I would, but she doesn't want to offer it, so it's her loss. I really love the hk unikorn and don't feel any guilt buying a clone, I also have a collection of other boards I bought from legit vendors but I would like to add it to my collection. I also feel better buying a clone of keycult than the real thing after interacting with their elitst, gatekeeper nerd community that ganged up and insulted and muted me on their disc for asking why raffles haven't been announced publicly for the last 2 years. They also ganged up and attacked mechmerlin, one of the guys responsible for making qmk, for pointing out a flaw in qc in his keycult. Really gross community kc runs.

      @@benfromsg Bruh why does youtube auto delete soo many comments. I wrote up a whole reply and it auto deleted it. But if it doesn't delete this too, yeah I get what you mean. There are tons of boards out there that are just as good, so it's not like you NEED to pay those prices to get a good board. Nor do I look at kalam like some robin hood. I view him in the same way you view clones of designer clothes or watches. It is what it is. If you want to sell rare expensive luxury items that are relatively easy to make and copy, there are going to be copies. I have a dozen other boards, but I really love the hk edition unikorn, and they go for 4.5k on aftermarket. I'm not paying that. So it's either a clone or nothing at all, so I bought a clone and feel no guilt. I also have other boards but this is one I'd like to add to my collection. If singa wanted to make unikorns and kohakus widely available, she could. The demand is there and vendors are big enough to comfortably do shipping logistics for large volume orders. She has already done large group buys with the tomo and jane me, and no one flips those. In the early days it was hard to do logistics for large volume orders, but at this point with this demand, it's nothing more than a business move. If I could buy a unikorn from singa and not from scalpers, I would. But I can't, she doesn't want to, so it's her loss.

      Also to add to this, I don't support key cult in any way. Their community is some of the most toxic and elitist gatekeepers of any keyboard sub-community. In their minds, they spend more money = they are better than you. I asked why a raffle hasn't been publicly announced in their discord in over 2 years, they gas lit me trying to say they actually do publicly announce it, they don't, they private message random people active on their discord and let their friends and family know so they can flip them. I didn't say any of that that I found that out later, I just asked why they haven't announced in a while, they grouped up and insulted me personally, then a mod muted me and also insulted me for asking. Not to mention they grouped up and insulted and threatened mechmerlin, one of the main guys responsible for developing qmk, for so much as pointing out some small qc issues with his keycult board he bought. They're truly the worst. If I really wanted a keycult I'd buy a clone even if the real thing was cheaper, I'd never support them.

    As cool and available of a product like Awekeys is, their behavior as a company is shady. Your video is excellent quality and I'm sure is genuine from your POV, but I would not recommend this product. From what I've seen, people have been receiving broken products with poor customer service and at the same time, they engaged in falsifying their reviews - recently, on r/mk, they used AI to generate a false review while forgetting they were commenting with their literal brand account. It's a shame and wouldn't encourage anyone to buy this.

    GMK is just ridiculous. I’ll never buy any set of keycaps that costs more than my keyboard, while waiting up to a year. You say clones are bad, but clones are the reason kailh, and countless other new switches exist. Do you tell people to only buy cherry because they’re the original top dog like GMK? It’s the same with keycaps. Clones are getting good now. More and more good custom keyboards are coming from china with really affordable prices. I think they could handle producing some plastic keycaps without messing up.

    • @benfromsg
      @benfromsg 3 месяца назад

      The only reason why I don’t support clones is because they are pirated from people’s efforts so is unethical. Imagine someone taking your homework that you did till 2am and submitting it in as their own. There’s no way you are convincing me this is right.

    • @InnerFire6213
      @InnerFire6213 3 месяца назад

      @@benfromsg if people could make what you make better or at the same perceived quality and still sell it at a lower price than you, there’s something wrong with your process. If other companies didn’t ripoff cherry, we’d all still paying premium price while cherry wouldn’t feel the need to innovate at all. Also we’re talking about some molded plastics. It’s not a knockoff adidas or iphone, it’s just plastics. There’s no way a company in china can’t just buy the same machine, use the same materials and make the same product. I get it these designers also worked hard, but they could also make their designs available to cheaper manufacturers instead of GMK don’t they? Just like a gucci you’re paying for the exclusivity. There’s no way you’re convincing me a GMK is better

      I would if I can get my hands on some! But off the top of my head, under 150, I suggest to look at epomaker ones 96% plus. PLEASE, if buying from Chinese brands, please please please search for the keyboard itself on amazon, it’s easier to get returns if anything goes wrong with your keyboard! If you want something more expensive, kbdfans has the odin keyboard in stock right now while you can find windx98 keyboards in the aftermarket on r/mm on Reddit. These are all great full sized or near full sized keyboards. Personally I would go for the windx98, and then epomaker then the Odin. Some people have said that the Odin doesn’t have the best sound profile but I have yet to try it out myself, so take it for what it’s worth. Hope I helped!
