My favorite opera ever. And this scene is one of my favorite scenes from it. The singers are marvelous. And I like the conductor's interpretation. Although I understand what the stage director was getting at, alas, I must disagree with his reading of the text. Whatever feelings Pelleas and Melisande have for one another, it's most likely that they're not quite aware of them, hence all the erotic imagery of the text, but oblique. The tragedy of this work is, in my opinion, that humans are barely conscious of themselves, only dimly aware of what is going on inside of them. And that has terrible consequences, that they might not even be fully responsible for.

Obviously this is way before COVID-19 😂 because I would’ve thrown that popsicle away from me like a grenade, just sayin’

The libretto makes it pretty clear that the relationship of Pelleas and Melisande remains innocent and chaste. Yet here they are in this production groping each other sexually. Kinda justifies Golaud’s previously irrational suspicion, removes a big part of the tragic arc of his story, and reduces the opera to a standard jealous husband tale. The modern-dress production with its ugly psychiatric ward setting moves the whole thing into the realm of travesty.

Great singing, but what a horrendous production. I can't understand why every director treats this, most beautiful of scores, with such ugliness and austerity. I have yet to see a production that's as much a pleasure to watch as it is to hear.
