The way they take in everything they learn with such wide eyed and childlike innocence is so pure. Like... knowing the centuries long history of discrimination, prejudice and oppression, you immediately wince when you hear Sasha ask the question, and for a moment Onyankopon looks shocked too. But then both he and the audience realize that she didn't ask the question with any malicious intent... to shame him or judge him, just out of a genuine sense of curiosity. She doesn't look upon him as any better or worse for it... just different. It's such a simple moment but in so many ways speaks to the themes of the show about "othering" groups of people like the Eldians and rejecting anything that scares them for being different. It's society and the legacy of oppression and discrimination that puts the idea into people's heads that "different" means "scary" and "bad." Racism and xenophobia aren't /innate./ Those are learned social behaviors in a fundamentally flawed society. In a lot of ways the Scouts are like babies learning about the world. The see a difference, a simply ask "Hey, why is that?" rather than having any preconceived notions.
