I found and removed a GPS tracker from my ND MX-5
I bought a 2020 Mazda MX-5 from a well known used car dealer recently. While investigating a mystery battery drain, I found a GPS tracker on the car and removed it. The clues were all there - and I talk about them - but "someone" didn't really act until the car barely started due to a weak battery.
My Lotus Elise is also making an appearance.

Looking for fall colours on my BMW R100GS - no talking, no music

    Great video! But why do you find yourself getting bored of the MX-5 quickly?

    • @garagemoneypit
      @garagemoneypit 6 дней назад

      I generally have a fairly short attention span when it comes to vehicles anyway and while I like the driving feel of an MX-5, they tend to be a little cramped and impractical for me as I'm just a tad too tall for them to have appropriate head- and legroom.

      Thank you for answering! I just purchased one 2 days ago and it’s a blast, but I also fit (just barely). My least favorite part is the numb steering.

    • @garagemoneypit
      @garagemoneypit 6 дней назад

      @@slurpalurple You're welcome! I'm definitely looking into trying to lower the seats as I likely won't pass a broomstick test with the stock seat height and a helmet. Plus, I could really use a bit more seat travel. The steering isn't bad IMHO for an electric assist one, but I agree it's not comparable to older Miatas like an NA. that said, with this now being my second ND, it's worth getting an alignment from a shop that knows what they're doing (ie the local race shop or similar, not most big tire chains). It did improve the feel somewhat for me, but the alignment on the car had been way off.

    Do you think that loose battery terminals cause the car wont start? does it cause the battery to empty?

    • @garagemoneypit
      @garagemoneypit 12 дней назад

      Usually when one of the terminals is loose, there's still enough contact between the post and the terminal for the electrics to (mostly) function, but it won't transmit the full current it could transmit if the terminal was properly tightened. That tends to affect charging and it can affect starting, because it's usually the starter that draws the highest current of anything in the car unless you have a monster stereo. It shouldn't cause the battery to drain, but I've seen the battery to not recharge properly due to loose contacts (which is what made me record this video). It can also damage the alternator if the connection is really bad, and might prevent the car from starting if you can't get enough current across the connection.

    Original owner of 93 K11RS, 2nd owner of 93 K11LT and 89 K1 and 86 K100RS motorsport. It's not a rare bike as such, it's a k100RS 16V that someone put the K11RS lower fairings on. If the factory released it that way in limited numbers I'd agree it was rare, but it's modified post factory, not rare. But not to take away how well done it is and the corbin looks great. I got my RS with the pannier liners and they came with a matching luggage roll that goes on the rack through the strap slots. The top boxes came out on K100RTs originally then LTs. In my country, they are plentiful but many are colour matched to the LT they originally came off. They scratch up the racks, so I keep a pristine rack that never gets used with a box, and a rack that always gets used with a box. The k100rs 16V is very different to a K1 in ergonomics- different seat, bars, peg brackets, dashpad, seat pad, frame, forks. The k1 has an abs canister in the fairing next to the headlight. Very different. It's got a terrible turning circle so something in the geometry is different too. The feeler gauges are for the ABS sensors, not valve clearance. The bike comes with a first aid kit and puncture kit too. Rare K series in Australia are ABS K75S with three spoke wheels - that's hens teeth here!

    • @garagemoneypit
      @garagemoneypit 20 дней назад

      Thanks for the comments. My main reason for labeling it as rare was not the bodywork conversion - which is something I'm trying to undo anyway, turning it back to stock - but the fact that it's a two year only model. Not to mention that it wasn't exactly one of their big sellers compared to the 8V model. Here in the US, they're pretty hard to find these days. K1100LTs are probably my favourite Flying Brick. I've owned several and probably would open my wallet for another one if I came across one in really nice shape.

    That's a bit of a disappointment to see the mileometer only goes up to 99,999 and rolls over. I guess BMW had started to see the writing on the wall and acknowledged that most of their owners would be lucky to ever see that anyway. The older six-figure mileometers engendered a sense of confidence in the machine, misplaced as it may have been.

My K100RS - which is actually a year older than the R100GS - definitely has a six digit odometer. It's odd - I've owned five flying bricks of various types, and I never had one that had City cases even though it would've made a lot of sense when I was commuting on one. Maybe I should try to find a set.

      @@garagemoneypit My K was second hand, and came with the big boxes. Great when packing for a couple of weeks! I managed to track down a pair of city boxes, and they made a real difference when filtering through traffic. I used the bike for commuting through rain snow and flood. Only let me down once. An HT coil failed and stopped providing spark. Luckily my bike had two HT coils, each driving 2 cylinders. I travelled home on just the two cylinders.

    • @garagemoneypit
      @garagemoneypit 9 месяцев назад

      It’s a K100RS *16V*, not a regular K100RS. Basically a K1 with K100RS bodywork. Pretty rare model, only made for two years at the end of the K100RS model run. It is however wearing the wrong bodywork - someone “upgraded” it to K1100RS bodywork at some point. I intend to address that issue once I’ve dealt with some of the remaining minor issues.

    Was that whining an over tightened cam chain? It happens when people have a stubborn or seized cam 'horseshoe' and resort to tapping down on the cam tensioner bolt at the top, instead of the proper tensioner bolt below it.

    • @garagemoneypit
      @garagemoneypit 10 месяцев назад

      I guess I should really have a closer look at it. The whining is much more audible in the video than in person, but given that this bike is from the time of not-so-great Honda camchain tensioners and people keep mentioning this one the video, I might have too much hopium in my ears :)

    from what little i know (i'm rebuilding a master cylinder on my yam xvs650) brake fluid wil suck water out of the air from the smallest of small gaps. rubber brake lines are porus and over time water will wick it's way through the rubber and start eating seals. that's why brake fluid has a service interval. if you've never changed the fluid in the 8 years you've had her i wouldn't be surprised it was eating things.

    • @garagemoneypit
      @garagemoneypit 11 месяцев назад

      You’re correct about regular brake fluid being hygroscopic. I think my mistake was to assume that the brake fluid looking fresh for the front brake - because that looked like it was 1-2 year old given the climate I live in - would mean in the same for the rear brake. Of course, it could just be the master cylinder being fed up with life…

    • @TwoWheeledPotato
      @TwoWheeledPotato 11 месяцев назад

      @@garagemoneypit I've learnt not to assume anything xD I had a car with "timing chain rattle" that ended up being 2 knackered camshafts and oil starvation issues. There's not all that much to a master cylinder, a couple of umbrella shaped seals and a piston. you could rebuild it yourself if you wanted to save some money. my money on what happened is the rear most umbrella seal went (in particular, a tear or a pinhole), then only the dust seal held back the fluid. On my yam the front seal (pump) was the suspect one, it was barely holding on, so i had a really spongy brake. after i pulled the thing apart and reseated everything it just wouldn't build pressure. but it also didn't leak. a 'smoking gun' of bad fluid would be lots of little black bits in the reseviour, the colour of the fluid may be acceptable (because someone may have recently changed it) but any grit or cloud is a huge hint that stuff is being kicked up into the fluid/has been eaten by it.

      @@TwoWheeledPotatoyou're definitely correct on the assumption part. I should've learned this by now after a few decades of fiddling with cars and motorcycles. But then again, I probably wouldn't be doing this still if I didn't retain a sliver of optimism.

      @TwoWheeledPotato 11 месяцев назад

      @@garagemoneypittry not be so hard on yourself, every day we all learn things :) Honestly, i've only learnt what i know because there's a shortage of decent mechanics around. Messing with brakes isn't something i'd have done by choice. Absolutely, being optimistic is the best way, as much as it may sound like i'm a pessimist with things, i find being able to question things means i get to understand the root of things and knowing is what gives me a lot of optimism that even if something is eally\ bad, something can be done. That car with the bad camshafts btw was done really cheaply because i knew someone that was willing to try some used camshafts and because i understood the risks of them i was comfortable taking that risk where most people would have just scrapped her. I then had that car for a whole 2 years after that before it went to her new owner.

    When you use the off-road algorithm, the vest is not as likely to deploy in a low speed get off, so the chest protectors are there instead. That way you don’t have to replace CO2 cartridges so often.

    Good review. I picked the Rally because it flows more air than the standard, I think because of the back armor. Very meshy and comfy when I wear it. A hint in hot weather is to wear an LD Comfort base layer under it. My Klim Induction is also AA rated, same as the Induction Pro. For 3 season jacket, I wear an Alpinestars Monteria because its really comfy to wear, waterproof, lots of vents and it’s AA rated with level 2 armor. Also has expansion for there tech air, which I assume works with the Klim vest too.

      Interesting re the additional airflow the Rally offers. Having not ridden with the standard vest, I assumed the airflow through the Rally would be slightly less due to the additional chest armour. Also, thanks for the correction re the protection level of the Induction jackets.
