2024-05-16 Houston Derecho
On the 16th of May, 2024, the Houston area and the greater gulf coast were hit by a rapidly moving and very violent storm, now named the "2024 Houston Derecho" by the National Weather Service. This storm arrived largely unexpected with few weather forecasts mentioning the possibility of an event this severe.

These are my dashcam videos of the event. My usual 10 minutes commute became a 45 minute ordeal. I've increased the playback speed of several sections to 4 times usual and trimmed out the beginning and ends to make this video a more watchable ~16 minutes.

Selected footage from an operating session on Mike Spoor's Chicago, Burlington, and Quincy Railroad, Chicago and Aurora Divisions on August 26th of 2012. This session was one of our busiest, with 60 trains on the schedule and 13 operators on the call board. A very busy day on the Way of the Zephyrs! I came across these clips while going through past years of old cellphone photos. All were recor...

This wasn't even the worst of it. The worst was 529 to W Little York and Hwy 6 which moved into Spring Branch. Imagine driving in that? I did a video of my experience in that area.

I’ve been in too many of these bad storms on the East side of Texas in my lifetime. Once I was in the Dallas area and a literal wall of water crashed down on my car. It was like driving through Niagara Falls. I couldn’t see past my windshield.

A testament to houstonians though watching everybody just keep driving like nobody's business. Doreen hurricane force winds. A few people who thought it might be a good idea to get off the freeway one or two even put on their emergency flashers. Glad you were off the freeway towards the end there. I was inside but it was really bad. Watching The tall trees next to my apartment twirling around. Then lights out. It looked like a hurricane had passed through for days afterwards too.

That was hard for me to watch because I have a fear of the freeway and driving. This is right where I live I when I do get out 290 is where I go up and down but this particular stretch is my part of town I was living in Jersey village recently and then I had to live in the Red roof inn in Jersey village on 290 a little further out is where my brother lives off Cypress North Houston where I also lived. I can't tell where you ended but this would be a nightmare to be caught in that I was in my living room watching it from Waller. I knew it was hurricane force winds because I've been through three of our hurricanes down here. Sheesh I was glad my new apartment had been renovated with double pane windows and Hardie plank and a new roof. Safe and sound.

It was my first day at my current job that day. I would get off at 6. At 5:59 I finished my training for the day, packed my stuff and then looked out the window for the first time in hours and it was pitch black. Then the warnings went off on my phone. This was in Cypress, where a tornado touched down pretty close by. The huge automatic doors on the building were flying open like they were made of plastic. Was definitely my most interesting first day of work lmao. Luckily I wasn’t off any earlier or I would’ve been caught on 290 in this.

This takes me back to exactly a year ago, at 7:30 PM (GMT-3), when my city, Bahía Blanca, in southwest Buenos Aires Province, Argentina, was hit by a bow echo storm. Thankfully, no tornadoes formed, but the winds still reached up to 180 km/h (around 112 mph). I had never experienced anything like it. Nobody saw it coming, and the city wasn’t prepared for something so extreme. It’s not the kind of storm we’re used to here. The destruction was massive. Lives were lost, and many people lost everything. It was a heartbreaking day that left our community forever changed.

I was going to cheer practice from my game at school and before the game we saw there was a tornado watch but we cheered there anyway in the rain. when we were going, we got the alert about the winds and rain, but it was too late. we literally couldn’t see out of any of the windows. there were downed powerlines everywhere in katy. my gym have a stream of water leaking out if the roof plus no power anywhere. so scary! 😭😭😭

It absolutely baffles me how people can know insane weather is coming yet they still get out on the highway or are in fast food lines. People are not smart, and it’s actually what causes so many to die in their vehicles during tornadoes, but I’ve also heard of people dying because they drove during a storm like this and a tree fell on their car as they were moving. You people need to Wisen up,
