ABB SM500 data logger problem and fix
The ABB SM500 logger is getting a bit old. The screen was dim and didnt acknowledge the memory SD card used to record data so would not record. The fix for this is a Screen Upgrade Kit from ABB. Usually a ABB tech would do this upgrade, but we were in a very remote location in the Australian outback so I did it myself. Full tutorial with tips for releasing connectors on the board and a couple of solutions to problems you may have on initial start up.

Hydraulic press side play mod Free fix!
Thank you.
I have taken the guard off the lead screw after a couple of crashes. The shaft to the pinion was bent so I used the hand feed to turn another shaft, cut the pinion off the bent shaft, drilled the centre of the pinion out and inserted the shaft. Put a bit of weld on the end and turned the end of the pinion to fit. It now works fine. Unfortunately something has happened to the drive on the lead screw and I have another repair to do.
Did you get the email Mr Hillbilly
Hi John, I got your original perkins comment in a youtube email but cant reply to it mate. It tries to go to a no reply RUclips email instead of yours. Can you email directly at bamboobullbar@gmail.com
Did you receive my email Mr Hillbilly ?
John E, I cant seem to be able to reply to your message. Feel free to email me at bamboobullbar@gmail.com about your perkins
Still available
I think the heat from cutting slightly annealed it , when i tried To do this my clip snapped immediately , I’m going to aneal the next one first
Millimeters, the measurement of engineers 👍🏼
My f100 is almost identical and shares the same issue. However your panhard bar and steering wheel is on the other side! Hopefully this helps thanks!
How can I order one of these?
I’ve always used Otterbox cases, my wife got me a fake Otterbox defender for Christmas from Amazon about 5 or 6 years ago to replace my genuine Otterbox defender on my Samsung S8. I knew straight away and she was refunded by the seller and asked not to leave a bad review. Anyway that fake Otterbox case lasted 5 years and the original not even 1 year.
Great video! How do you rate these motors compared to the patrol & cruiser 6 cylinder diesels of the 90’s. I haven’t seen these before. Are parts cheap & available through westrac/cat australia? If you were in the market now & looking for decent fuel economy & a drive through anything 4x4 what would you buy?
These perkins are simple and go for ever. But they are low on power and 50 years old. I only really like it because it came fitted from Ford Australia as an experiment in the 70’s. It is basically the same engine as ford and mazda used in their light trucks through out the 80’s so parts arent a big problem. If you want to build a bush weapon there are other engines that love working hard like the 1hd-fte or isuzu’s or 6bt’s… but the costs for an engine swap are ridiculous…
how many hp for 247 perkins are parts hard to get .do you need to install a overdrive
100hp at the crank for normally aspirated. I have almost doubled that with a turbo and a few mods.. parts are ok because they were used by ford and mazda trucks through the 80’s and alot of parts are interchangable. I bought an overdrive years ago to put behind it as the gap between 3rd and 4th gear was huge in the F100’s, but after I finished my mods it didnt need it..
@@hillbillyengineering01 i always would have liked to have f100 with perkins in mechanical fuel injection no computors.Really great you have shown yourself working on yours
What can I do to increase power/performance of my Perkins 6
Easy cheap things: pull the injectors out and check they are working properly and set to the correct pressure. The truck style airboxes are great but very restrictive, a good pod type is one option to make it breath better. Check the injector pump timing. Consider increasing the fuelling of the injector pump, but dont over do it. Find a bosch/ zexel injector pump from a newer engine, e.g mazda t4100. (I use a nissan patrol pump). A Turbo charger will almost double its Hp and torque…
Where can you find a turbo with a manifold that is suitable?
I enoyed your video but I must advise you that the pins you refer to as 'split pins' are actually 'roll pins' of which there several sub types. (I'm not trying to be a smart arse. My dad always told me "if you don't know something then learn about it and share your knowledge with others". I hope you take this in the manner it's intended.)
Cheers mate, yes I knew I said it wrong at the time but spontaneously narrating unscripted dialogue for hours while concentrating on the task at hand and filming often leads to that. Cheers for picking up on it mate
Qwantuz hp? ?
Hey mate, what kind of alternator are you running with this engine?
Its a 2006 rodeo vacuum pump alternator mate. Bolts straight in. I had an auto sparking do a little job on it tho so I could still run my tacho off it and use my existing external regulator (the rodeo one has an internal regulator)
Model number: Daylec 65-3132
I have shipped heaps of these to the US and up to Canada. Recently I changed the whole clutch in my truck and I left the old clutch fork in with this repair kit still in the clutch fork to ‘keep field testing’ it. It has been going great for years now. They are $40 US delivered to the US. All you have to do is use my email address to pay in paypal and I’ll ship it out with tracking. Cheers Craig
I’m in need of one of these and not seeing your email?
Sent you an email. I would like to purchase one of these kits.
Hi mate, I have just seen your email (it went to my junk email folder) I have replied with details. Cheers
Sounds like brit billy engineering, very similar to hillbilly but leans more toward Chinese engineering.
Nice
Thanks, I didn't expect you to do such a thing.
Hi, I noticed the water pump on the bench. Did you manage to find a new one?, I've been looking for a new replacement but unable to find. I did get one that looks similar but the mounting holes are on a different PCD and one of the stud holes, bottom left side is offset, so didn't fit. I think the impeller also fails the block. Any idea where to get a new one or what fits?.
I havent started searching for one yet mate. Let me know if you find one!
They’re all Made in China now. The superior quality is gone now. They don’t even register them any more. Back when they were Made in Mexico they were individually tagged with a personal serial number. Not anymore. 🤷🏻♂️
Fantastic Transformation!
I've just bought a 79 f100 with the perkins here in nz, all these videos you're making are bloody fantastic. Great info and how to's. Cheers.
Good stuff mate, yea there isnt much on the internet about them hey…
Good job! These motors seem a little odd to me, they don't look anything like Perkins, and almost look more Japanese in design, even the harmonic balancer looks like early Toyota 2H, and the indirect injection seems strange for a Perkins of this era. I'm currently adapting a Perkins T6.354.4 into a 40 series Landcruiser.
What model engine is that?
Perkins 6.247 mate. 4.1 litre 6 cylinder diesel. Put into ford f100’s in the 70’s and then later in the mazda T4100 trucks
@@hillbillyengineering01 hell yea man! Would probably be easier finding parts for it as opposed to the mwm 4.2.
I hope no-one intends to do any hard work with that knife. With that clip exactly where a sensitive part of the hand will be I can see blisters happening pretty rapidly when doing anything more than opening an Amazon package! Totally useless piece of kit in my opinion. Why spoil an otherwise nice folder? Nuts.
I imagine the majority of folding knives in the world spend more time being carried around ready for light and very infrequent use. Its great you are working your knife hard. I use mine at work, but it doesn’t get much of a work out and the clip isnt a problem at all. I have more specialised tools for ‘hard work’. Not sure though why you need to be negative to people who have different needs and set up their things differently to you.
@@hillbillyengineering01 True. Apologies for insensitive comment. I'll rephrase that to read that I would not have (and don't have) such a device on any of my knives.
@@dennisleighton2812 all good mate, i’m glad your using your knife so much. Mine rarely gets a run
@@Perkins6.247Diesel My Leatherman has already had a rebuild courtesy of the lifelong warranty at the time. My SAK main blade was not much bigger than the little one when I replaced it! So yeah, I have used them a lot.
I’d buy one of these for $30 if you want to make one!
Just curious, how many amps is the alternator?, would you be thinking of upgrading?.
Hi mate, I upgraded the alternator a few years ago. The original was 40amp, the newer one is 80amp. The newer alternator is for a holden rodeo / isuzu. Jaylec 65-3132. Bolts straight on and has the vacuum pump on the rear
@@hillbillyengineering01 Thanks for the info. Mine is a 40 amp unit I had to pull apart and re-varnish, But am looking to get a more powerful unit as I have extra batteries on the effy and use it for camping amongst other things. Also, does the electrical connector connect straight on, or did you have to work this?.
@@magicalvortex your welcome mate
wow!
Awesome stuff!
Thanks for this informative video.
Will you do these for a price?
Very Cool Mod.. Not too crafty, most people can do it... Even me!
cool might try that !
Cheers!
Nice.
Great Video
Maybe clean the poor bastard before stripping, might stop more shit going where you don’t want it . Just saying.
Hey there, Did you end up making a proximity sensor (shut off switch) ? if so where did you wire it into ? Cheers
That mod is sick! 🤘
I’ve replaced the pinion and shaft that was bent and now I have to do it all again. Same issue, feed screw cover will not compress far enough when using the top slide. I’ll have a go at straightening it if bent. I think I’ll remove the feed screw cover in front of the apron and put a different guard on it, probably just an acrylic apron.
Hi, Good video. I have the same problem. (I left a piece of plywood on the bed after I changed the Chuck over) got distracted and crash!) I've had the lathe for 20 years. A CQ 6230 almost the same as yours. I had a look at it this morning got as far as removing the lead rod, and undoing the the worm gear, but couldn't drop the apron. But, I see that you need to remove the directional rod as well. I could not remove the end block that holds the three rods because of the dowels, so just pulled the lead screw through. So, your video answers the question. Thanks. Graham, Bundaberg.
good
You wont believe this, but I saw this video last night for the first time, I was just looking around for anything on the AL336 and thought this could be interesting, a view of the inside of the carriage, might come in handy one day for my lathe, I even shot you a question about the cross slide lock to which you replied (Thank you) THEN.... The next morning, Not more than 8 hours later, I crashed my Carriage (Really dumb mistake, long story) and broke the same roll pin and bent the same shaft... If it weren't for this video I don't know what I would have done, After multiple viewing of your approach to this problem, I attacked it slightly differently and found this repair to be a breeze, now I am confident of any future repair needed in this dept THANK YOU SO VERY MUCH FOR THIS VIDEO, Regards, Brendan Fraser Melbourne Australia
Awesome mate, thats what it is all about hey helping each other out. That was my first time pulling the lathe apart...
Question of a different subject, but same machine, Does the AL336 have a Cross slide lock ? (I found the carrige lock 8mm allen head) slightly annoying not being able to lock the cross slide - Love ya video, turn ya camera to landscape, Cheers from Melbourne
Yea, that would be nice to have! I am just about to move 2000kms and deliberating whether to go to the trouble of moving it or sell it and getting a better model.... i do really like this lathe tho!
I would love to see this in action.
Wow that turned really nice. Looks factory. What a damn good idea if I had the right tools I would do this stuff.
