@@TrollTanxd no, it was pretty coherent. I’m just stating my opinion. You don’t have to agree with me.
Well that was some impressively lame shilling for an AI slop game that didn't even present a discernible argument. You buy into their crypto stuff or something?
Eww, it's a crypto card game? No thanks
@@ShadowLynx777 To be fair, while the company is run by Generic Crypto Bros and their original pitch was heavy on the crypto/NFT aspect (Kickstarter doesn't allow this and shut them down), the kickstarter that did finish had that aspect removed. I imagine it's still prevalent on their website and likely to be integrated into the future of the game if it continues. This is all from memory of back when it happened, so I wouldn't be able to say much more than that with any certainty. Plenty of Good videos on RUclips that go over it though! The most frustrating part, at least for me, is that it does look like there's a kernel of a good game here. It's not just a Magic or Pokemon clone. But the abundant generative AI use and the predatory FOMO focus just kills it completely for me.
@@mauiimakesgames my enthusiasm for the game is genuine. It’s a great game. You sound like you have a chip on your shoulder. Don’t be angry because my opinion is different from yours. I would love to hear your opinion in a more diplomatic/constructive way.

I feel like the argument that the bulk isn't usable just dissolves the moment you want to have more than one deck built at the same time. I've definitely played casual games with my friends where we'd all just have 2-3 completely different decks built or even throw together one on the spot if we felt like it. Bulk lands in MTG is a must-have if you play limited formats too. I think it's a little silly to disregard these cards when they're realistically a necessity to anyone who wants to play the game casually or in a limited format, which you likely are if you're cracking packs instead of just buying singles tbh.
@@viardzen yes the lands definitely are necessary in mtg, that’s not my point. I realize you need a lot to make multiple decks and for certain formats. I’m talking about the game itself. I would much rather make a deck of 50 cards where every card is important rather than a deck of 40 cards and then throw in 20 basic lands. The only important thing about the lands is the quantity I choose to include, but each land as an individual card is pretty meaningless.
@@BeAHeroGaming Mtg's Lands and pokemon's energy to a lesser extent have kinda always been more about deckbuilding than the gameplay itself. I think it's unfair to dismiss it as just "throwing in x lands" when yeah, that does suffice, but I think managing the ratio of fast lands, lands with downsides and upsides, and basic lands to hit off of effects or just for speed has always been one of the best parts of deckbuilding in mtg. No other game challenges you to think about your resource base so specifically like that. I really enjoy the freedom of expression through the manabase too. The manabase for a fast deck looks entirely different from that of a control deck, and I think no other game really expresses this similarly because everything else tries to pretend like it's archaic or unwanted. It's dynamic and engaging to realize "oh, I should sub in a couple more basic lands because a lot of golgari decks run assassin's trophy" or to struggle between cutting some beloved lategame cards over having a more consistent manacurve. Building your deck is part of the game too, and if anything, I think basic lands are the epitome of mtg's deckbuilding's success.
@ well said. I don’t like having a giant surplus of basic lands, but you’re right - resource management is a fun part of deck building. Thank you!
As a game designer and an artist, wow what a bad faith argument disguised as a shill for an AI Art / Former NFT grift. "This green energy is worthless to me if I don't want to run green" or "these red cards mean nothing to me if I don't want to build a red deck" is such a disingenuous argument. CCGs appeal to all kinds of players, many of whom like different aspects of the game and different strategies. It's not hard to figure out that just because one card isn't "FOR YOU" that means that the problem isn't with the booster pack, it's with your mindset. Many players of CCGs and TCGs, popular and niche, have multiple decks they make which all try and utilize different cards and different strategies. Just because a green energy card isn't useful for you because maybe you play Blaziken, realistically none of the cards in that pack are useful for you. Thats why you use them to build other decks. If you're issue is simply that resource cards are undesirable, there are plenty of games out there coincidently not in this video like Kaijudo / DuelMasters which every card functions as both a mana and as a unique card, or games like Yugioh which are resourceless systems, but even in these games there are "undesirable" cards by the metric of "I just don't want to play with them" which is what you presented during the first half of the video as thats a subjective statement. If your problem is actually "I don't like having too many cards I don't play with" brother I would really recommend you challenge yourself to make something out of them wether its fun new decks to teach with or go donate them to a local game store or an after school club who would be more than happy to take them, but please don't start talking about how a game that couldn't even be bothered to pay for artists is doing "Something revolutionary" when this concept of "no waste packs" have been around for almost years in card game design, though honestly based on reading your comments where you say "If you play wonders of the first and don't like the cards you get because you dont play those colors, you can sell them or trade them!" it looks more like you're just here to shill while disguising it as praise because that same solution can be applied to every game you mentioned. Strange how you left that out though.
@@AriesOnIce nope, not shill. I just really like the game because it solves a lot of issues I have with modern CCG’s. My enthusiasm for the game is genuine. And yes, everything I said in the video is 100% my opinion. You don’t have to agree with me. In fact, I enjoy hearing honest counter-arguments. It’s hard to judge in a comment, but it sounds like you’re just angry. Don’t be angry because my opinion is different from yours.
These packs are all designed with Draft format in mind. The repeat staples like leaders and lands are added in to support that format.
A few things from a GameDev's perspective, please excuse the novel of a comment: -The Argument that the blue/white land isn't usable unless you play white or blue ( 5:40 ) can be made about every colored card in the pack. Of course the red card isn't useful if you're not playing red, green card not useful if you're not playing green. In addition to that point, even if it was a basic land. Every single set of magic has unique art for the land cards, and those are just as collectable as decks frequently use 20-25 lands. Buying lands separately is an option but defeats the purpose of collecting. -Buildup. If every card in a pack had the same level of excitement generation. The final hit of getting a really good value rare, variant art, or gameplay impacting rare, isn't as impactful. Just as the tempo of a movie, the tempo of opening a pack following the same ramp up to literary climax, has a similar effect to its opener. -Your personal perspective of "well i have a whole box of lands" is a valid perspective, but not everyone's perspective. Someone coming new into the hobby needs those lands/energy. Those who are looking to collect new land art is also wants those lands, and is *also* a valid perspective. -The reason there is color separation in TCG/CCGs is to have more limitation, and creating gaps to creatively fill by the player. -You state Wonders of the First, is different because every card is useful. If I have 20 copies of a common card ( just as I generally do with say, a land ), I would have to raise fault with that statement. At the point of saturation (play copies needed for the number of decks that need play copies), all cards become redundant and unneeded. All of that said.... I agree with the *general* sentiment. I think land/energy in general is not great, and quite antiquated. There are more modern solutions. Pokémon TCG and Hearthstone, both operate without cards that have a primary purpose of generating resources. I think you have a completely great point here, but the evidence presented to assert it seems easily refutable.
@@TS-LordPhrozen Sounds like I need to sharpen the saw! Thanks for your feedback, and I appreciate your diplomatic approach. You make some very good points. My only response is: yes you will accumulate a lot of commons in a game where every card is useful in a deck. But you can go to a lgs and trade/sell those cards. Nobody is going to want my basic lands/energy. I guess I could give them to a new player, but they will soon have the same issue. It’s also more fun to craft a 50 card deck where EVERY card could have an impact on the game, rather than making a 40 card deck and then tossing 20 basic lands/energy in. 1/3 of the deck really has no impact on the game at all (aside from the quantity).
Its not possible for every card in a pack to be useful, first off it would completely kill the reseller market (which most of us doing mind but they would) and next it would inflate the cost of the cards because of how the sheets would need to be made and printed..... Dude this distrubtion of CCGs is very much "set in stone" for the way it works, not because of the game designers but because of the factories. You have to spend hundreds of thousands of dollars with them before they will even print on the booster packs and make them random.... Pack opening is dying, its considered gambling by most people, its rife for abuse from scammers, and it causes most games to be dominated by flippers pretending to be collectors. If you arent gonna play green then half that pack was uselss to you. The reasons that booster packs include these "blank cards" is because of the way that sheets work with printing.... no it cant be changed no it cant be fixed, and no there is not a better way to do it, because its set based on the printer and maker of the cards, not the designer. There is so much going on with the distrubution of card games that you dont understand its very painfully obivious.
@@trixer230 my point has nothing to do with distribution at all. I’m talking about the game itself. A game that requires mana/energy/leader/etc. to play will have to include those cards in a pack. Over time you will accumulate a bulk of useless cards (for playing the game). Wonders of the First has solved this issue by making EVERY card potentially useful in a deck. If you don’t play a particular color, then trade/sell those cards. I can’t trade or sell my huge box of basic lands/energy that I’ve accumulated over the years.
You should check out Sorcery Contested Realm. It has all the advantages you mention that wonders has and more. Plus Sorcery has amazing old school fantasy hand- painted art. I'm really not digging the look of these wonders cards.
@@HyperHowie56 I’m actually the opposite. I didn’t really like the sorcery art, but I really like the Wonders cards. That’s why it’s nice to have so many choices. There’s a game for everyone!
@@BeAHeroGaming Definitely great to have tons of choices! We live in an awesome time where everyone can find something that they really like.
I get the argument for lands and energy, but I don’t see an issue with leaders, unless you collect all of them right away but as long as there’s a lot you’re fine
@@TNT925 it’s not really an issue if you buy singles, but if you’re opening a lot of packs you’re going to end up with a ton of leaders that you will probably never use.
There are so many surprises in store for the pack ripping experience, too. It’s going to be very exciting!

My favorite competitive card game is Yugioh brcause you have access to almost every card in your deck. My favorite card game to play casually is Magic because it has the best flavor and supports multi-player. The point value system instead of bans is an interesting idea. Thanks for sharing
@@ZackeroniAndCheese yugioh is one that I’ve never tried. But I keep hearing about it so much that I might have to check it out.
@BeAHeroGaming if you ever do, I recommend checking out Edison Format. It is the 2nd most popular way to play. Advanced Format has had the same complexity creep issues as MTG. I am not as much of a fan of Advanced Format.
Luckily all my old cards still play the same! I started playing in 2007 and the significant powercreep from when I started came to my attention in 2016. Since then, I haven't purchased a card printed after 2016. I've been spending my money allocated for Magic on older cards to complete sets that were before I had started. I can have fun and vote with my wallet simultaneously
@@ZackeroniAndCheese way to go! The problem is that there aren’t many like you left. All the new players want Universes Beyond, so WOTC is selling it.
I think it's understood from a gameplay perspective that, if you're going to have a resource system like this, and if you're going to print that resource system onto cards that go into your deck, that you're introducing a lot of bricks that need to be managed either with escape clauses or high card velocity. I suspect for anyone other than new players, this will quickly feel like a neccesary piece of resource management and not a cool opportunity for expression. But that's not what this video is about, it's about pack opening. I come from yugioh, so maybe there's a cultural difference, but I'm not buying packs just because you put cool cards in there. That's something you do when you're young and stupid and don't know about the singles market. We have very little filler in our packs and it still doesn't change a thing, I don't want to buy loot boxes and I don't recommend it to anyone. MTG sells packs by offering draft and limited formats; Pokémon sells packs by offering online packs - real, substantial secondary games you get to play for paying the sealed product premium.
@@jkid1134 interesting take on the tropic. I don’t think these lands are just opportunities for expression. It’s definitely an additional resource that needs to be managed, but it eliminates the need for “basic” cards that are essentially worthless once you have dozens of them. Whether you buy packs or singles depends on your goals as a player/collector. If you’re a serious player trying to fine-tune a deck then definitely go with singles. But if you’re a new player building a collection or you like opening packs for the mystery of what they contain then go for it (responsibly 😉).
@BeAHeroGaming on the lands: yeah, that's what I mean by an escape clause, something they can do when mana production is pointless. lands are inherently so bricky - unless a hand of all lands or a hand of no lands can play, they WILL determine many games - that I think the text will feel less cool and more neccesary. but obviously this is speculation from quite a distance. side note: early magic thought they were dealing with this with land destruction, but it causes more problems than it solves so I didn't mention it. side note 2: the "I wish a hand full of lands or non-lands could play" thinking is I think how you get to "any card can be played as a mana source" games like wizards likes to make now on the packs: they're worse for collecting unless your goal is to collect literally every card in the set (and even then there's a point where you should stop and just buy the remaining singles), and this is the goal of almost no one. casuals have preferred playstyles and colors, competitive players understand some of the cards to be bad. have you done a side by side, like, how many playable blue cards I could buy from the newest mtg set for the cost of a box? it's not close. the "if you like opening packs" thing is true enough, but to me that's just like how you should only buy lottery tickets if you like scratching - I recommend it to no one.
ever heard of flesh and blood? every card produces resources of varying amounts, with cards that produce more being less effective. a hand with all 1-resource cards is still playable for most decks but has a less efficient resource curve, and a hand with all 3-resource cards is definitely playable but is less effective. there are very few total brick hands. you also generally cycle your entire hand every turn so one bad hand won't lose you the game.
@ yes I’ve tried that game a few times. The thing I don’t like about it is that you have to pitch cards so you’re not able to play them. Kinda like Star Wars Unlimited - I don’t want to throw cards away for resources. I can never decide which ones to pitch!
You know what these cards need to set itself apart from magic, busty women card art boom! That’s a million dollar idea I’ve just given you
@@ChrisZamundo-wp5bl not even necessary. The game already has too many great things that already set it apart from Magic.
To me those lands sounds exactly like non basic lands from mtg. They can have varying level of rarity and desirability but some of them are some of the most sought after cards (fetchlands for example). Comparing them to the basic land that is guaranteed to be present in every booster doesn't really make sense. You make it sound like they invented the concept of rarity.
What are your top 3 non-basic lands?
@@Urneosnrbwosrniensbrieensfurjd yes, you are correct that there are some exotic lands in mtg, but the point here is two-fold. One, MOST of the lands in a mtg deck are basic lands, but NONE of the lands in WotF are basic. And Two, when you open a pack of mtg you will usually get a basic land - who cares - in WotF when you open a pack, there are no basic (land) cards of any kind. Every card is interesting and potentially valuable in your deck. Even the “common” lands have tremendous value in a deck.
@@BeAHeroGaming To be frank here, unless we're talking about monocoloured decks in MTG, it goes the other way around: most lands AREN'T basic. Also, a lot of players tend to stockpile basic land cards in order to build new decks in the future, or to play draft/sealed games, even more so if they're full art ones (or, hell, foil full art basic lands, which people love to collect). If I'm not buying preconstructed decks, that's my only actual source of lands for those needs. Don't get me wrong, I like the concept of the lands in this game, and they sound extremely interesting. But any MTG player with a bit of experience will see your comparison and think it's a bit disingenuous or misleading.
@@HarverTheSlayer Yes, I’m one that likes a shiny foil land for sure. And I guess if you’re playing a multi-color mtg deck you might have a lot of non-basic lands. I just wanted to showcase the fact that none of these lands are basic. They are just as exciting to pull from a pack (or build into a deck) as creatures, items, or spells. I’m going to post a how-to-play video soon. You should check it out so you can see them in action!
One of my favorite card names in the set 😅
Okay... but at least two of those lands also exist pretty wholly preserved in mtg. Like this looks like a cool game, but gotta be honest, those 1st and 3rd just look like Homeward path and Bucolic Ranch/Scrying Sheets/The Biblioplex. Again, seems cool, but I feel like this feature can't put it ahead of other games when some other games already have them.
@@melonlord2229 sure, there’s definitely some good art in other games. My main point is that the lands serve multiple purposes which make them a lot more exciting to collect, pull from a pack, and build into a deck.
looks like AI why would anyone want to collect that?
@@brennanlable because: 1. The gameplay is unique and really fun, plus it’s not just another reskinned mtg 2. It’s created not just for collectors and not just for players, but for both 3. The team behind the game includes experts in game design, experts in collectability, experts in lore and world building among others 4. The card art is epic and cohesive 5. There will never be reprints so cards will retain value 6. The DBS allows for equal deck strength in a competitive environment 7. I could keep going, but you can clearly see there are more reasons to collect this game than any other. Don’t be so short-sighted and write something off just because you’re bothered by 1 thing.
@@BeAHeroGamingok but counter point if the game doesn’t catch on the cards are worthless and for a second point if the art is ai it’s not gonna have value among collectors of things as ai art is essentially free because it doesn’t come from an actual artist meaning just about anybody could make the art for this game. Also not a reskin of magic the gathering you’re essentially using the exact same mechanics tell me what does a shield counter do?
@ yes the gaming community will decide whether or not the game becomes collectible. Nobody can see the future, but because this game is different on multiple levels than all other CCG’s it is positioned to do well. You should give it a try. I’m going to post a play through soon. Check it out.

@@NEREKA7 nope not an ad. Banned cards is a major flaw in mtg. I found a game that fixes that so I thought I’d share what I found. That’s it.
it's fromage, not formage, dude, please
@@danceable 🤦🏻♂️ oh your right! Thanks for keeping me on track!
Wait… this spurious, circular argument isn’t even seriously about Magic? This is just your Shark Tank spiel for some ostensible card game that’s not even in production yet? That weighted allowance system of yours isn’t even as daring and innovative as you seem to imagine. Android: Netrunner had their “NAPD Most Wanted List”, for one. Guess what happened? Wizards could still introduce a restriction system just like this tomorrow, if they were stupid enough to try. It’s a logistical quagmire, with too many granular, entangled decisions to continually fiddle with. This is a perfect Dunning-Kruger solution. The only feature that’s going to guarantee your promise to never ban cards is insufficient interest. Way to make a first impression. If this were your elevator pitch, I would throw you down the empty shaft for being so disingenuous. Never try to bury your agenda like this again.
@@coprographia 😂 you’re cracking me up my friend. Looks like you finally watched the whole thing! Nope not a pitch, just an awesome game that has fixed a lot of things wrong with popular CCGS. And come on now, nobody is throwing anyone anywhere, and my content will proceed as I see fit, but thanks for the input.
The same reason there are so many desktop Linux distros, diet plans, or Protestant denominations: They all suck.
@@coprographia I wish it was that simple, but I really don’t think it has to do with different formats being good or bad. It’s so people can use their banned cards.
@@BeAHeroGaming I didn’t say different formats were good or bad. I said they _all suck_ . It’s Balkanization. A diaspora. Goldilocks as Sisyphus. That shelf full of Holy Grails at the end of Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade, except we can only choose poorly. It’s Linux.
dissolution Noun 1. The termination of an organized body or legislative assembly, especially a formal dismissal. 2. Disintegration, or decomposition into fragments. 3. Dissolving, or going into solution. 4. The quality of being dissolute.
Here is a rule i want clarification it says in the 2.0 rulebook in page 7 of it in (IX) create your 25 card combat and diplomacy pool, take the 15 advanced combat and diplomacy cards but in the cards nowhere it clarifies which are the basic combat and who the advanced any clue how to distinct it?
@@FordMrson The basic cards for both combat and diplomacy are numbered 1-25, and the advanced cards are numbered 1-15 (advanced card also have the character name at the top). You take the first 15 basic cards to form your starting card pool, then you shuffle the remaining 10 basic cards with the 15 advanced cards (make sure the colored banners at the top match) to form a pool of cards that you will draw from when using xp to upgrade your deck. Do this for both combat cards and diplomacy cards.
@@BeAHeroGaming Here is my issue it has 4 different colors isn't that right? it has 25 cards each from 1 to 25 i see nowhere from 1 to 15 unless you mean from the 1-10 are the basics and from 10 to 25 are the advanced cards of the same color.
@ you’re right, it took me a minute to wrap my head around it. The different colors allow each character to have their own set of cards. When you complete an encounter with more than 1 player the cards can get mixed up as you play them together. The colors help you know who’s cards are who’s after you complete the encounter.
@@BeAHeroGaming yeah but there are 25 cards of each color right? so from those 25 who are the basics and who the advanced cards?
@ the cards numbered 1-25 are the basic ones. There should be another set of cards, with the character name at the top, numbered 1-15. Those are the advanced cards.
There isn't. There's Commander and realistically that's it and that's how it's been for years at this point 🤷
@@AaronOneal-e7h I think you’re right. It seems most people play commander, and the other formats are kinda in the background (including standard).
@BeAHeroGaming I remember when my locals used to do Standard,Legacy,Drafts and pre releases. Now it's just Pre releases and Commander on Friday nights.
@@BeAHeroGaming also I'm pretty sure channel is banned in Legacy. Sorry to burst your bubble.
@ yes it is.
After seeing Wonders of the first at kick I stated getting into magic too. Mostly because I found the story (except for one part) realty interesting mostly the phyrexians. Finding out they they basically took them out of the storyline really bummed me out. Got a Valhiem box to try and get I think Voriclex ended up finding him was super excited even at 29yo. Then the marval and spongbob set got announced and I was like wha what? WHY!
@@FlagrareUnbound I feel you. Don’t know where they’re going with this, but after sponge bob, it could go anywhere.
Dude. Lol. What the hell. I had to turn it off after 5 minutes.
Other than that hoard dragon card they all sound reasonable. Thanks for keeping up with this game.
I like warhammer too, but it doesn’t belong in magic. It’s hypocritical to be fine with universes beyond just because an IP you like is featured. If I wanted warhammer, I’d go paint miniatures, read books, play warhammer. I’m here to play magic and immerse myself in its fantasy worlds.
@@munooro ya, you’re right. Maybe I didn’t make that point clear in the video. I should NOT have been ok with it. But because people (me) embraced it WOTC ran away with it, and now, down the slippery slope we go.
We have enough cards that say "Whenever". "Whenever you cast an instant or sorcery spell..." "Whenever a creature enters the battlefield..." "Whenever an untapped non-token artifact creature of power 2 or less that your opponent controls and entered the battlefield this turn.."
