Characters are so important... the more realistic style from before made people care about building the city, made people care about serving needs. Cartoonish characters just make people feel like randomly let them die and its meaningless.

Modern gaming is completely going to shit. What happened to the 1st/3rd person, open world, explore game that completely drew you into the world as the character you played as... Skyrim still stands as one of the most popular games of all time, and thanks to the modding community... still stands up to scrutiny of today in terms of gameplay.
