The Child with Special Needs - Maurice Sparrow
Великобритания
Добавлен 1 окт 2011
This channel is the distillation of many years experience of working with children, young people their families and their schools, children who have difficulties learning and socialising because of something to do with their brain, their eyes or their ears. For example one of the specialised areas I have worked with is called CVI or cerebral (cortical) visual impairment and this is a vast subject. I would like to make a small contribution and I hope that it is of value to you. Thank you for watching and subscribing.
Priceless! 3 year old meets her newborn baby sister.
Alice (3 years old) and Aimee (20 months) meet their brand new baby sister Lily, barely 1 day old, for the first time, as mum comes out of hospital. As I post this a storm is passing through Britain named - appropriately Lilian - I expect the new baby to cause a storm of her own. What are Alice's and Aimee's expectations? What do they think of Lily.

A SENSORY STORY FOR CVI
Просмотров 60Год назад
A sensory story engages many of the senses - hearing, touch, smell, sight... This one I wrote for for Sophie, a young girl with cerebral palsy & CVI. It's about exploring the forest, about what you can sense under your feet, what you can hear with your ears, what you can smell and what you can see if but dimly or vaguely - with your eyes. In reading this 'live' I expect to take your time and al...
Two Years Milestone
Просмотров 14Год назад
Another in the 'Milestone' videos. My granddaughter is 2 years old. She loves to copy her daddy when he sings songs in church. Here she is singing part of a gospel song and playing gutar with a plectrum. At 24 months a typical child is talking, walking, climbing, jumping, running and in Alice’s case, singing and playing guitar with a plectrum! She has an increasing number of words and she sorts...
Six Month Milestones.
Просмотров 282Год назад
Here's my granddaughter Aimee-Rose at exactly 6 months of age (20/6/23). Typical 6 month old babies can stand with support, are very sociable and show lots of smilling and emotion, lots of vocalising and babbling, show interest in their own and others' faces, track ad follow a moving object. Here she is rocking and rolling. Enjoy! #developmental milestones #6 month milestones
Dorsal stream and ventral stream vision pathways
Просмотров 163Год назад
In the brain vision travels in different routes. First from the eye through the optic nerve to the occipital lobe and then on via two main pathways - the Drosal Stream and the Ventral Stream. Different aspects of vision are handled and processed on these routes. And damage somewhere along these pathways affects vision in very different ways. #cvi #visualimpairment #babydevelopment #dorsalstream...

This poem is about a caretaker nowadays called more often a site manager I believe. The lockdown brought to the surface the anxieties and mental health difficulties so many people feel in these troubled times. This applies equally to children. And those with special needs are more at risk than others. I wrote this little poem/story during this time, inspired by an idea. The idea was that maybe ...
The Story of Silvia Sparks - The strugggles of a Visually Impaired girl in a mainstream school
Просмотров 34Год назад
I wrote this poem to describe what it might be like for a newly qualified teacher to be presented in your class with a young child who is visually impaired. the feelings of disempowerment, the worries that you are not doing enough, the concerns that you do not fully understand the child. These are all natural feelings for a teacher, who has not come across a VI child before. It was also written...
EARLY INTERVENTION - 6 TIPS TO PROMOTE VISION
Просмотров 106Год назад
Early intervention is essential in the case of children with brain damage. With my grandchild's help i demonstrate some helpful strategies and activities that can form a part of an early intervention programme for your child, and hopefully will encourage your child to use their vision more. Any infant will benefit from these but I particularly have in mind those who have CVI or who are developm...
I HAVE AUTISM & BPD
Просмотров 192Год назад
Dave was diagnosed in the army with Asperger’s & borderline personality disorder, which as he admits, is not a good combination to have. Distrust, poor empathy and intimacy problems are common in BPD, often leading to difficulties in friendships and relationships. These symptoms may appear in both disorders, but those with autism are less defensive and are unable to read others' emotions. Child...

Albinism affects 1 in 17,000 in the UK, yet many more have the albinism gene. To inherit albinism both parents must have the gene and then there is a 1 in 4 chance of having albinism. In my experience it's not unusual for there to be two kids in a family with albinism. What fewer people know is that albinism ALWAYS affects sight, often severely because the lack of the melanin pigment that cause...

Dave Williams is an ex-soldier and an actor and he has recently been diagnosed with aspergers syndrome. I HAVE OCD & PTSD

Lauren is an alternative model. She has hereditary spastic paraplegia. She has OCD & PTSD. She is a truly remarkable lady, determined to raise awareness of OCD and to make her mark in the modelling industry. Her story needs to be told and it needs to be heard. This is really remarkable. Please watch it right through. #bullying #ocd #control #suicide #nightterrors #psychosis #ptsd

Thank YOU Wilson for sharing such an informative story. I hope many teachers and parents are able to watch and learn. :)
I always welcome explanations that simplify things that are difficult to understand. Thanks for that, Maurice!
Thanks to Maurice, I understood the power of minimalism! This is a very useful definition for those living with someone who has CVI
I really appreciate your comments Viktoria, thankyou. Keep sharing with your friends.
Thank you for helping me understand my child's vision more and more through your explanations
Thank you for the clarification, it helps a lot!
Thanks Viktoria. Yes indeed, when you know a bit of the biology of the brain it helps. If the first bit of visual processing (V1 or the primary visual cortex) involves analysing shapes by their edges, lines and borders it makes sense to help the visual system as much as possible by enhancing edges and removing anything distracting.
I am very happy to share this pdf book with you if you email me - cviclondon@gmail.com - no charge :)
I watched the video, well done. One small error, I do know what colour my front door is, not to mention all the colours it has previously been. I just can’t picture it. I believe when you came to us you wore a blue shirt. You camera was a Canon, SLR type and you flash had a white diffuser. So I don't forget things just because I can't picture them. Again two different neural pathways I suspect. I don’t know if it is relevant to you but I also cannot remember smells and tastes. To me the smell of the first rose of Spring is both wonderful and new but also like meeting a long lost friend simultaneously. Similarly I know I like raspberries but do not ask me to conjure up the taste (let alone what they look like). I always read the blurb on wine bottles about overtones of plums and notes of tarmacadam and think “what?” In reality it makes little if any difference to my life. If I want to construct something I may not be able to picture it but I can imagine it in an abstract sense. Perhaps I just do it differently, use different brain pathways. And when it comes to food, I know what I like and what I don't. So a cookery programme is a visual experience for me and that alone. I quite literally can't guess what it might taste like. As you said it hasn't held me back any.
What a gorgeous baby...
haha isn't she just😍
This is amazing, thank you Maurice for sharing this❤️
Great video Maurice, you look very familiar 😂. Yes I like watching you open my eyes to this concept of minimalism…
