2025 Trek Checkpoint Dura Ace Weight Weenie Build
Просмотров 2,3 тыс.21 час назад
Bought this thinking id just change the bars/stem, seat/post, toss on a high end cassette and thats it, ya know, a budget friendly but high performance, fun in the rain/shitty road kind of bike. Something where i'm not accumulating wear & misery on my baby (the 6.5kg Madone)... Well a few moms clicks later and ive got Dura Ace and a bunch of weight weenie parts on the way... Forgot the mention ...

Gents, I've finally landed! After a genuinely torturous 2 full days of travel I have arrived in Pattaya Thailand. I have abandoned my Pinarello, took my Madone SLR and chose my 50mm set of custom wheels as my "all around" setup for here. Wish I could have my other wheelset's with me but they will have to come another time... The Bike Bag worked as claimed and it made it with what I would say ba...

I’m really glad I stumbled across your videos on the Madone. I’ve been toying with the idea of getting a used Gen 7 and was curious whether 6.8 -7.0kg is attainable in a size 56, with 50mm deep wheels. Looking at your build I’m guess the weight savings came from: - Saddle - Wheels and tyres - Crankset - Cassette Would you consider posting the weights of your components?
@@83Goodyear I could get it down to something like 6.2kg and after doing the math back then it seemed like my frame was heavier than most people’s. So yes deff doable
Subscribed! Waiting for the build.
sell the trek and keep the F
I doubled down and got another trek lol. pinarello needs adopted now
how did you get the handle bars to get more material (carbon in the lay up) just a request to who exactly?
these were the first gen bars and now have added it to every bar where it is no longer buyers choice. also the 2nd gen bars come with rainbow ti hardware I was told to expect (have another pair in the mail currently for the new trek build)
Cool. Thanks. Im in a holding wait for the exs bars @@HeyWattsUpCycling
What's the mounting interface. I am looking for an 8 bolt.
this one I got is direct mount, they have other variations to fit shimano chainrings etc iirc.
I have some ones that look like those off AliExpress. I think they're called lesse carbon cranks. But those ones come in really short sizes. I bought 3 in 150mm and one thats 135mm. I'm building up a bike after Christmas. They look really good, actually I think the finish is better than the elille carbon cranks. I've been running 2 sets of those for a year. I'm not concerned about them snapping
I wonder if all these come from the same mega factory and are all just private labeled diff brands like wheels are.
@HeyWattsUpCycling I think so, mine are 367g vs 328g. The difference in weight is the clear coat and the pedal washers are installed. The elilee cranks pedal washers just come in the box.
Do i need 3mm offset chainring if going to set up for gravel?
taking new vid tomorrow showing the chainring clearance from every angle with the 46t. I dont think you need any spacers if you stick to 46 or smaller. 48t may or may not, 50t will for sure need offset or crankset spaced out.
@ Pls. dont forget to tell what chainring sram or shimano direct mount.
Hope the build quality is good as a crank snapping on you could be hella dangerous
yup, not sure what the internal structure is, could be completely hollow carbon with no metal frame/support in it. could also be super flexy. high hopes tho.
I bought this brand from Aliexpress, and can say it is good quality at a affordable price.
Love to hear your reviews after riding it.
What wheels are you using? I can get you wheels that are like 890 gram wheelset, 30mm wide, 25mm internal, 22 deep, hookless, 65 psi max. $833 dollars (excluding any pending new tarrifs).
thanks for sharing, im only interested in running hooked rims tho. all my wheelsets are the same style except the depth, this one ill be using my 40s I have a YT short vid on.
@@HeyWattsUpCycling What wheels are you using? And their stats please.
@@travispyle2905 40x30x24 hooked tubeless.
@@HeyWattsUpCycling manufacture, cost, weight?
Using this mainly on road? That’s a big gear!
We'll see how it turns out, if im way off base I'll admit it. I feel I can climb anything on the madone with its 36/30 gearing as I did the steepest climb of my life in thailand on it all while in the saddle. I dont feel like I need anything lower than 1.25:1 gearing, especially being in florida.
@ yeah that’s true in Florida you’re all good. I’m in New England and would at least like the option of going off road on some trails … but in Florida you’re aces
Is it nice though? I spend most of my time in the drops. Having the best feeling tape to my palms are quintessential. I run Silca Nastro Cuscino. It’s not the lightest, but it sure provides the best cushioning for my rides and isn’t slipper when it gets wet.
it is deff not super sticky if thats what your after, id probally wear gloves if I knew I was going to be riding in a rain race tho. I have little weight thru my hands so im not so concerned for shock reduction tho I imagine they compare quite favorably to most of the heavier, denser rubbery type grippy grips.
Following as I have this exact same bike.
paint is amazing in the sunlight right? and the website doesnt even look close to its color in person.
@HeyWattsUpCycling Yeah I used a spray ceramic coating on the finish and it really popped!
I am looking at the Checkmate and the only color that I like is the one you have decided on, Too bad they don't offer that with other components or it as the frame alone?!
yeah, trek and cannondale seem to be the worst offenders when it comes to selling framesets as the ugly color option only. im still undecided if its "genius consumer manipulation" to move a customer away from building their own and pushing them up to a top tier complete build to get the colors they want OR..... just idiots steering the ship haha
Maybe you know, but the checkmate is not the same frame as the checkpoint, I have this red black frame and I think it's very nice, but yes options are very limited, too bad frames alone cost almost as much as the whole bike.🤡
Clutchless derailleurs kind of suck in the rough stuff. Just FYI
riding it mostly on bad pavement and sandy/beach roads rather than actual trails. can also increase the spring tension in the cage if its not enough
@@HeyWattsUpCycling Can you you increase tension on 105 DI2 and not just Dura-Ace? That's what I am running currently on my Checkmate. Just waiting for it to die to switch to GRX.
Are you building this to sell? I’m in market for checkpoint, so… Send me a message either way
building it to ride, tho id sell it if someone made an offer I cant refuse. it is going to be running a custom made set of wheels so its not going to be something I want to give away. that said I hope my pinarello goes soon and for 5500 I cant believe nobody jumped on it.
@@HeyWattsUpCycling Yeah I've seen your posts about the Pin and if I were in market for road bike then that'd be tough to pass over. I was thinking about a higher spec Checkpoint but after following along to your build, I may be inspired for this lower range purchase + upgrades over the winter
get well soon, looking forward to the glow up!
loving these recent uploads! Whatts up!!! Nice call on the dura, looking forward to more of the vids. gotta sneak a motor in there and mess with the group rides lol j/k and would love to oneday hear your take on the china vs the taiwan debate.

Sick. Have also been scoping out a checkpoint for myself
Not so interested in component weight but rather a frame comparison from carbon, titanium, aluminum, and steel.
How do you like the Vittoria tires? I just burnt through a set of Pirellis, just didn't last.
good & light. I HATE pirelli's. cant go wrong with pretty much anything else.

Did you remove the Di2 Battery or leave it in the frame? I'm traveling soon with my madone and not sure if I need to remove the battery.
maybe thats why they opened my bike? its basically non removable since it requires the crank and BB taken out, its in the downtube not the seat post like most frames
What’s the wheelset?
Just went out of my way to find one of the last madone gen 7 slr 7’s and put some 6560’s and ceramic speed bb, rides like an absolute dream and is such a beast at climbing
yup its killer. so stiff when doing 500+watts climbing an ultra steep hill in the lowest gear its amazing

Name of wheels please?

Lovely man
Got it for $4500
Nice video. This wasn't a problem in the past as long as bottom bracket and spacers installed properly. I encountered this recently with my newly built mtb. Bought some 1x chinese brand cranks, shimano like spindle with sram direct mount chainring, installed on 73mm bb shell with shimano bb52. After installation, drive side crank arm was outboard by 5mm than non drive side. I switch the included 2.5mm spacer from drive side to the non drive side bb and the crank arms are at equal distance relative to the center of seat tube. The next problem I faced was the chain ring touches the chainstays, and chainline was almost at 45mm, my solution, bought a 3mm offset chainring and chainline is now at 47mm. It was both perfect, biomechanically and chainline.
Who is the builder of those wheels ?
A true time machine timeless design
Have been using these and they seem good so far. Had used their 24g model in the past but those were terrible, they wouldn’t hold air at all. Leaks around the valves on all of em.
What's the saddle height on this one?
What kind of bottle cages are those?
ive been trying to find them again for over a year, forget where I found them, got 2 sets for both my madones back then.. crazy light, stiff, reliable.
Dude you’re a total weirdo for hating on Ukrainians at the Olympics . Let’s step into the octagon and let’s see what happens .
Those look awesome. Especially the peanut butter / jelly / marshmallow burritos. I’m also a fan of Cliff Bloks!
Nice video! I see you already have 150+ subs…congrats! 🎉 I think a lavalier mic would be helpful for your videos especially as you walk around your repair area with bikes. DJI makes a nice lav mic. They sync with a receiver that mounts to your camera. One other idea: I told you that I use the Sony A74 for the Giro Aries Spherical helmet video. That is a pro camera and it’s very nice. It will be amazing for a studio in your repair area. If you want a more portable setup that still shoots excellent 4k video and is compatible with a lav mic: check out the DJI OSMO Pocket 3. There are many RUclips videos about it. You can put it in a pocket or under seat carry bag - it’s small: then you can shoot wherever you go. The lav mic syncs to the camera with Bluetooth and it’s really simple and good. Hope this helps. Best of luck! -Jeff
If you could choose one would you get the new dogma f? Or the gen 7 madone slr
my madone is the best bike ive ever ridden and likely will ever exist imo. the pinarello I built to be a fun all arounder, the madone to be a serious race bike.
