Matthew meticulously traces Jesus’ lineage all the way from Abraham, through King David, and down to Joseph. And by doing this, Matthew is saying to every Jew who’s paying attention: Look! He checks all the boxes. He is the King. He has the credentials. He has the legal right.

The God of the universe wants you and I to feel that He loves us. That He goes to great lengths to tell stories over and over again of what it’s like and he invites us into that. He wants us to know and understand love, he wants us to feel his love. And then he wants us to see the demonstration of it.

The God of the universe became human. There is no other story of hope, no other good news than the God of the universe who sent Jesus into our human existence to live and die and rise again.

The whole Christian experience is counterintuitive. You don’t conquer the Christian life, you just accept the love of God and acknowledge your dependence on Him.

The only way for us to really triumph over evil and suffering is to live forever in a place where those things don’t exist. When the Bible talks about suffering, it always does so in the light of heaven. It’s always seen through the lens of an eternal perspective.

God wants to use the pain in our lives to do some deep things in us, good things, powerful things, lasting things, eternal things.
