I recently started English classes at work and I think it's not really helping me improve my confidence and fluency in English speaking, because we work with boring textbook exercises. To be honest I don't like it at all. I'd love to speak about the things in my life that make me happy and have lively conversations. Would love to book some classes with you 🙂

I totally agree and haven't heard about this connection much elsewhere. Speaking fluently german (native language), dutch, swedish, english, french, spanish and italian (with dips into learning japanese for one year) I find it strikingly obvious how grammatical structures shape one's outlook on life. Plus cultural restrictive beliefs, often transported by parroting proverbs (and thereby internalising them) sells you to a certain "reality". So it is quite refreshing to learn a second, third or fourth ... language. It can rinse your consciousness, so to speak, from stale concepts. I love all things languages teach us, semantic patterns, and the overall music and flavour one gets to enjoy.

Thank for your nice pieces of advice. They will help me with other stuff, though. I normally feel quite motivated to learn English, it might be because I love it ! Thanks for your helpful lessons 😊

Hi teacher Joseph, great questions! I think the main reason that anyone who is learning English should be to build real connections with other people, in my case I’ve moved to the UK to live together with my partner, we are currently living in Glasgow(despite he is being from England, he absolutely loves Scotland and has chosen this place to make our home) and improving my English skills would make me to communicate better with the people here, as communication is a huge part of living in society. My native language is Portuguese. I thought I had a competent level of English, all those years that my partner and I have been together, beside our differences of culture and language, we still could communicate effectively. But when I’ve moved to the UK I realised that my English isn’t high enough, at least my understanding, there are lots of different accents here and it made my confidence at speaking with other people grow lower. Saying that for me to communicate effectively and give no space for misunderstandings, specifically as I work as a care assistant is essencial.
