What is the best version of the top C? Gregorio Allegri: Miserere (LIVE VERSIONS)
Best one according to me: ruclips.net/video/zxJ3bMmWBmo/видео.htmlsi=r5KgnhuCYPTUaYS9
The 'Miserere' sung by the Tenebra Choir (Joséphine Stephenson) is a masterpiece ! I would even say that it borders on perfection.
Wheres Voces8 Andrea by a country mile
There are identifiable, objective criteria: the legato should be present - there shouldn't be any break or jump in the attack on the top B or C, it should be smooth; there shouldn't be any vibrato or shake at the end of the note; the intonation should be perfectly sustained throughout and finally the sound should be round and fluty, not thin and screamy. Most of these are really good but there is a hierarchy if those criteria are applied, no? Surprisingly, the earlier Tallis one is poor. Often, the boy trebles are best, I think, especially the boy treble in New College for Edward Higginbottom. "Letterbox mouths" from women sopranos on the change to the top note are often indicative of the wrong adjustment and the resultant sound is thin. I think the Byrd Ensemble has one of the best women sopranos. The girl soprano of Clare College Choir and the lady in the Marian Consort are great, too.
This analysis by Ralphoperaphile is sound and should be taken seriously. King's College Cambridge 1963 with the divine treble, Roy Goodman, is the most perfect performance of all time. Adult professional choirs will never beat that performance.
@@desmondjack6162 Thank you. I should have remarked that not every performance here is in the same key - and indeed it is dubious whether Allegri intended there to be a top C - but we do love to hear it!
I really love the one of the family singing at 2:48, that girl's C note is exquisite
Byrd ensemble and Tenebrae
where is Voces8 version?? amazing
the interesting thing is Allegri didn't even write this 'top c', there were mistakes in copying 2 times where it was written a 4th higher, then another 4th higher on the 2nd copying
I love the sixteen and Temberea
The first one is the best
That's not always a C, given the different keys.
Not in this video but Andrea Haines - Voces8
The first soprano - Josephine Stephenson brings tears to my eyes every time.. And all the boys! Sublime!
I was waiting for VOCES8 and Andrea!
These are all incredible. Thank you for putting them together for us.
Does anyone else get Lord of the Rings vibes hearing this?
There is a reason why the church preferred young boys to sing the high notes (insert joke) but seriously.. 7:15 made me lose my hair. Some of the others are obviously great, some are horrible, and only a few are special and made me have goosebumps. Something about that soft unfinished mellow barely existent vibrato of 7:15 and the way he crescendos it perfectly.. my goodness. P.S. the evolution at the end is absolutely beautiful. Ive seen a documentary about the evolution of Miserere and how it sounded differently through the eras, each unique and beautiful.
Incredible to think that we wouldn't be hearing this today if it wasn't for a certain German composer who started out as a child prodigy.
All are my favorite
They were all really good and it's hard for me to pick a favorite, but that Mediterranean choir stood out to me as being very good
This is one of my favourite performances of the motets, I have the CD. It is however amazing how many great choirs, including this one, sings the incorrect G sharp in the bass of bar 70 instead of G natural on the last 2 quavers. Tenebrae is probably one of the only choirs to sing it correctly. Love these motets.
Very interesting, I'd never noticed that before; most modern editions have G natural, but most choirs sing G#. However, earlier editions on IMSLP (including the holograph supposedly in the composer's own hand) clearly have G#. But I quite like the G natural as Tenebrae do it!
Coro “Iride” is not C, is higher 😮😮😮 please let us know who did that
Warum vergleichen? Jede Version ist einzigartig und individuell... Es bedarf ja auch des Klangbetts der anderen. 😇🙏🎶✨
So far Sixteen and Clara College. There is woman in Birmingham, Alabama, Janet Ort, who is as good as anyone I’ve heard.
5:00 I think
Or 7:18. One of the boy sopranos
What wondrous variety! The most surprising intrerpretation was Harry Christopher's with The Sixteen 09:30
❤❤❤Andrea❤❤❤
ruclips.net/video/SpLJmfV3wNA/видео.html for me an insane version, maybe the best of all, listen 1:38. But never the less, I love all of the shown ones.
Is lady at 4:00 Clare Wilkinson? Right now she is an alto, but maybe she was soprano in the past?
What about the kid that inhaled helium he was very good
Just to be clear: that high C was not in the original. I would love to hear a group sing "Miserere" in Allegri's original version.
0:39 gets me every time
Voica8 was not featured. Anyway all sounded marvellous 👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻
Nigel Short for sure
It is like a rocket launch, starting with the countdown and building up of intensity. You are then suddenly thrown into outer space and you long for a soft landing. The high C has to carry the element of surprise, soft as cotton but hard as steel. The boy sopranos did it with ease and to them, it is like a game. The 1994 Tallis Scholar did the best job. Many singers screwed up the landing.
Ok, I have to go back through, Byrd? Silky, mmm. This is a nice comparison format, thnx for a fine field. 🎉
Byrd Ensemble soprano is best in my opinion. So pure.
I’m not well versed in this type of music, it’s so beautiful. But I had no idea young boys could sing like that - no wonder there were castrati back then (and thank God that practice has stopped!)
Das ist Gänsehaut pur!...die Qualität des Chores ist Weltklasse, einfach phantastisch!!!😍👍
It is one of the most Beautiful compositions i have ever heard in 43 years of my life! Tears..
Tenebrae and Byrd Ensemble
Von ganzem Herzen vielen Dank!!!
Todo maravilloso.sencillo emocionante. Refleja lo bueno del ser humano, belleza, paz frente al odio . Abel frente a Caín
Everyone did great but the Byrd Ensemble was great here. And that Coro Iride group which took it a note higher, hitting High D instead if the usual C.
As someone who knows nothing about music other than how beautiful that is, I kept trying to guess which person would be the high C and never guessed right. Also the variety of the mouth position and body movement was different each time.
MAESTRO PALESTRINA SHOULD BE CANONIZED FOR THE MIRACLES OF HIS COMPOSITIONS!!!
Although singing like this has its sacrifices...you don't know how much I envy you. But even more, I admire them.
I generally prefer treble performances of this but my all time favourite is Voces8
Tennabrae are the only ones who sing the c without a break un the note and the new version from the 16 is stunning.
The sixteen were the first choir i heard sing this it called out to me and I've returned x Thankyou . Since then everyone ive heard are just as good x
