Late Summer 29er Sail
Просмотров 430День назад
It's been a while, but the wind was forecast for 20knots all day and then when we got sailing there was almost no wind...
Likely the worst Fireball Video you'll see.

Mess about with Abbie and me on the fireball. Video is from months and months ago. Hope you enjoy

Took the Fireball out for a blast and got a lot more wind than expected. So we made the best of it, in the most fireball way possible. Apologies for any colourful language aboard my boat....
Light Breeze 29er Sailing

I will admit this is a part 2 to my earlier video. The wind was so wildly different that the videos just didn't work together. Also means the 29er will get more screen time!

Patrick and I take the 20 for a spin, when a sudden squall makes the boat really feel like a skiff.

Light breeze during the day, that kept dying off till it hit zero. After derigging the boats breeze back on, but was time to go...

This is from over a month ago, I've been doing so much that I haven't had a chance to edit. Big breeze from the west made for a lively sail. Seems Abbie and I are always finding ourselves in stronger and stronger breeze.

Ignore the blabbering Big gust makes us go down the mine. Not going to lie, that's probably the driest we were that day.
29er Light Wind Practice

After a shocking start and 2 turns we started the race. Light wind of less than 8knots gave a slow pace to the day. Hopefully you appreciate this video being a little slower - if you don't I can't do much about it sorry.

More coaching at Ballyholme. This week we had a front passing. Winds starting at 15 knots and building to 25 gusting by the afternoon. Very fun as we did many short races.

looks lively and gentle now but definitely was pushing our ability. we're the only 29er at the moment but there is a spark of interest in more boats coming along. here's hoping

Stuff of legend
Thanks for having the humility and good humour to share! We've all had our own disastrous moments and I literally laughed out loud at @0:28 when things went from bad to worse!
This type of sailing make memories. Its all in good fun :)
Seems like you were distracted and weren’t as far downwind as you thought before going for the gybe?
Someone else commented saying I need to move the tiller. I did, just not enough... I'm used to sailing the 29er, which sails deeper downwind and has a more sensitive tiller. An honest mistake. Hopefully, the video made you laugh anyway
You do know you have to turn the rudder in order to gybe?
Whoops.
I love it when things like 0:22 happen and the boat's just like "nope". I had something the other day in my laser where I tried to tack, the boat started to turn through the wind then it just went straight backwards, turned and started sailing off in the direction it was previously going in.
It was entirely my fault, I tried pretending it was a 29er and it just did not work...
Was going for a perfect gybe on our 49er... gybe when perfect, until my helm missed the wire and flew off the back..
When are you giving me a go on that thing :)
Whenever you come down to Plymouth or Weymouth next
are we going to see you at nationals 2025?
Great vid my guy❤❤
Spent many days at Cairn Curran, VIC. Sailing one of these. Bill Barker, Brian Hocking, Mr Barber and some Ginnivans and Keans.
my friend and i decided to go out on his Byte (pretty much a small laser) on a windy day, we tried going downwind, whole deck was submerged for a few moments. Whoops!
Absolutely brilliant - lovely to have you back
Thanks!!
@@walowesk7122 You have any footage of sailing in The Netherlands, I have been waiting for You to drop that stuff with weeks if not months.
Didn't really get a chance to record it. Wind was light all week, never over 10 knots usually around 6-7. We put in a very solid silver fleet performance, finishing 70th overall. Likely would have done better if the wind got up, which never happened. I do have a whole weeks worth of footage from this year's Bassenthwaite week where it was blowing 20 to 30 knots every day. Some good sailing to look forward to :)
@@walowesk7122 Cool; can't wait.
Sailing is being 100% serious, about 23% of the time. Always gotta include the fun bits!
Wecome back to You tube people👍
Took a break... I've loads of stuff to put up
How did you have the camera mounted to your head? I have mine just on a strap around my head with it next to my ear. It keeps it out of r he way but it sees a bit of the sideof my face.
It's on a hat clip connected to my hat. It does get in the way but I got used to looking past that.
Wow that turtled fast
A few years ago when I was sailing I gybed around a mark and my boat tilted PAST 90 degrees whilst still sailing but I had enough speed to get it flat again without stopping or the boat properly capsizing.
49er? A boat designed for difficulty, I dislike this philosophy (and the boat)
Sure dude, you do you.
Elle a peur de sortir au trapèze...
I always anchor the first Mate to lock everything in, which it does ❤
Hi. I've read some of the unnecessarily negative comments below - what a shame. I think you both did really well, and looked as though you had a really good time. Well done both of you, and well done on your polite, patient answers to the unappreciative commenters.
It's been a while since uploading that video, i can see how i have improved since then... But given the circumstances that day with an inexperienced crew, I think we did alright. I really appreciate your support and the time taken to comment. Thanks for your positive attitude :)
Conditions I used to love... Once took a twin trap fireball out and managed to buckle the mast when a 35 Knt gust hit and we nosed into a wave off Malin Head , the top just folded forward by about 45 degrees. Made for an interesting sail home..
Why doesn't that surprise me.... I've been toying with a twin trapeze modification for a while. I need to find an old mast and matching set of sails. Happy to see the fireball back?
@@walowesk7122 Hated that boat in anything less than 25 Knts - being 6'2" and about 17 stone Im not built for it. Most fun in the waves coming off the north Atlantic is the 505 with twin traps and that massive kite..
Yeah every one loves the fireball. Is it true that the 505s are similar; but tech? Saying that I have never seen a 505 in real life only on You Tube.
A fireball is probably most equivalent to a 470 in terms of sail area and rigging. A 505 gets more complex with two self launching spinnaker poles and an entire assortment of ropes to assist that.
@walowesk7122 I kinda understand that the 505s would have more sail power + be a bigger boat. But are the similar in other ways; like planing + stuff Walowesk?
How many boats do you have?
Any word on You going to Netherlands in Rsfeva?
We leave next Friday. Its all getting very exciting now!
@@walowesk7122 Cool I know Ye are going over there to race. But try + make a few videos about it + the experience, etc. Best of Luck to Yourself + Abbie.
Looking great - learn fast through the curve, and have a good time rolling with the punches.
We will get there eventually....
Lovely - another grey day on Strangford Loch - I'm guessing that that's Killyleagh in the background.? Your helmsman is less photogenic than your usual crew!
Change of scenery, part time member ar ballyholme aswell. Making the town you see, Bangor. The water Belfast lough.
Nick new vid ❤❤
Hey saw you have a line going from one jib cleat to other one, how do you make that system so it helps with the gennaker drops?
Yes, it's meant to stop the spinney halyard recleating during the drop, it works really well as that has never been a problem!
@@walowesk7122 Maybe you could make a video showing how it works? Because I do not understand, after getting the system how do you cleat the spinnaker back?
Yeah not a problem. Next time I get a chance I will record a quick video on my phone and will send the video link here.
@@walowesk7122 Great big Thanks
@@teleskopas-_-996 Fairly sure thats standard on all fevas. The spinnaker halyard goes over the top of the elastic and pulling the halyard through the block pulls the elastic down enough for the rope to cleat.
Nice.... Hard to tell the wind strength - what was it approx? Love those days when you are teetering on the ragged edge :0
Didn't feel any more than 17 or 18 knots. It was strong but not howling. Made for an enjoyable ride
@@walowesk7122 OK - being a big lump the fun never really started until about 20knts for me..
enjoy the machine.... u didnt choose a simple snipe..... u will improve.... keep enyoing despite being last and u will be ok...... one thing, try to hide a little more ur disappointment about her fails.... u both u will be ok... gg
I'm never disappointed with my crew, my sighs that sound like disappointment are in fact sighs of relief! Not to be mistaken...
Its so satisfying when your going that fast with the spinnaker
Grate vid keep it up
Nice one Gennaker gives you waaaaay move stability
Send it 🤟
also love the videos
Never sailing a fireball in my life - I do sail 29ers though, How to they compare?
Fireball is far more stable but a lot more complex to sail. It may not be as fast as a 29er but it definitely feels faster as the bow throws up a spray.
@@walowesk7122 yeah they look quite nice - still love the 9ers tho
Great new vid would love to see the 29er again
Coming right up
You need to sit further aft! This is just basic weight distribution. You’re really not ready for a boat like this; you need to sail something tamer first and get your basic chops together.
Imma hell no. Find a boat you engine and get out on the water and learn it. Swapping boats ain’t gonna help. What do you sail and what’s you upper limits for wind
We're in 29ers now, 20 knots is a healthy breeze for us. We've come a long way
Gotta get my video published.
Gotta get my video published.
This is the type of exercise where the crew starts to think "I could be sitting at home with a nice cuppa now!" :) You should try the same thing with no rudder, really builds boat handling...
My crew would never.... right?
Great Video! Keep it up!!!
I know this may sound counterintuitive, but have you tried swapping positions in the Feva? Remove the the mainsheet from the bridle and just run it through the mainsheet block in the cockpit. This will help replicate the setup in the 29er. You as the main/experienced sailor should be controlling/driving’ the 29er. So start getting your helm ready for that by using the Feva as a practice bed. This give you a chance to get those gybes right(powered up) before giving it a go in the 29er. As a good gybe in the 29er is one which is at speed, reducing the loading on the main. In the 29er it can be you, the crew’ powering up the boat, calling the shots and just allowing your helm to just concentrate on helming. Just a thought.
I've often toyed with the idea bit never gave it a go. Would be worth trying as it definitely would improve our 29er technique. Definitely need to stick with it as I'm still at the stage where it feels awkward to not be holding the mainsheet.
Yourself + Abbey aren't shy of a bit of heavy weather. More power to Yee. Great to see a video from Ya. It's been a while. 👍😊.
I'd been away for a while and then the weather has been all over the place. Hopefully with the season in full swing I'll get a few more videos out!
@@walowesk7122 are Yee still going to Europe for racing this Year?
Yup, Netherlands in July
@@walowesk7122 Keep us updated on that + the best luck in The Netherlands to the 2 of Yee.

What boat is that. Like not the 29er, the first one
That's the RS Feva XL.
where did you got that jib?
Absolutely no idea, it's class legal. Is it a mark 2 jib? I think it's the older style
Never sailed a 29er but maybe try roll tack it in light weather
Ideally we would do that but still working on figuring out how
Fireball?
Yep
You need some adjustable trapeze lines.
That's a work in progress
