These "fastest-ever bowler" videos always seem to get cricket fans worked up! I'm a cricket fan, and I wouldn't have a clue which of them was the fastest - and, in any case, how do you measure "fastest"? One delivery? Average delivery-speed per over? (And how many overs should we use? One? Eight?). All I can say is that genuinely fast bowling is exhilarating to watch! The old-timers will tell you that the Harold Larwood of the MCC's 1932-33 tour of Australia was fearfully quick. I have no doubt that he was. Larwood wasn't a tall man, but he had long arms, which meant that the wide arc his right arm described as he brought it over could generate significant pace and get the ball to lift nastily from only just short of a length. The same principle operated in Jeff Thomson's famous javelin-thrower action. Richie Benaud always said that Frank Tyson was the fastest he'd ever seen. Tyson had an ungainly action, but he was built like a bull and his physical strength generated fearsome pace. In my lifetime I've seen John Snow, who was lethal on the MCC's 1970-71 tour of Australia - maybe not the fastest, but pretty damn quick and a very, very good bowler; I've seen Dennis Lillee before he did his back (and, although afterwards he never bowled consistently at his pre-injury pace, there were times during the famous 1974-75 series against England when he looked to me as quick as Thomson); I've seen Andy Roberts (as someone has commented, a beautiful, relaxed approach and action for a bowler of his pace); I've seen Michael Holding (also very graceful and fearsomely fast); I've seen Patrick Patterson (who, when angry, as he often was against Australia, looked even faster than the other West Indian quicks); I've seen Shoaib Akhtar (very, very, very fast!); I've seen Brett Lee, Shaun Tait, Shane Bond, Alan Donald, Mitchell Johnson . . . The fastest? I don't know, but all great bowlers! (And, on his day, any quick bowler can up his pace. Remember Devon Malcolm's destruction of South Africa at The Oval in 1994? Or post-injury Jeff Thomson's 6/77 against the West Indies at Bridgetown in 1978?)

I was at that match in cape town, Pak vs England. My dad got me tickets. I wasn't a huge fan of either team, but watching Akhtar bowl that fast was mind blowing. I didn't see the ball at all, keep looking at replays on the big screen. Good days
