This was NOT a Difficult Air Filter to replace much easier then my other 2015 BMW X3 and you do NOT need to Disconnect the Mass Air Flow Sensor. I did this today and it took me only 20 minutes to do.
Lol! Why would bmw make the most simplistic fix simple? Not horrible but a pain.
Better add liquid molly on German vehicles
So… I was on the Bimmerpost app, I read you can’t really remove the strut or the E14 bolt because it’s torque to yield. I don’t know what this means, but everyone said you had to replace the bolt after removing the metal rod you just swinged to the side. Is this true?
Thanks for the informaive video. Is there a torque setting for the drain plug or just "snug"? Thanks
20 Nm
I took my car to the dealership today after the "vehicle check" reminder came on and I am surprised they didn't change out the engine filter. My X3 has 33,000 mile and still has the original filer. Is there a specific reminder for the engine filter? This is my first and last BMW.😤
The first time the OBC reminded me to change the engine air filter was around 40k mark. It was slightly dirty, not horrible. If you drive in dusty conditions, I would assume the computer would tell you sooner.
@@NamHoang-wn6zp I see. Thanks.
Why not under each control arm bushing. It’s the lowest point at the front and should be more than strong enough since it it subject to tremendous suspension impacts daily.
Why do what you suggested twice when the front central lift point is designed to lift the entire front end in one shot, for example to place jack stands.
@@NamHoang-wn6zp because you have to drop that central plastic cover to use a jack. What I ended up doing is used 2 bricks and cardboard to prevent damaging the central plastic and it worked for jacking m40i up without dropping the plastic cover. I also bought the jack pads too
@@jonasbaine3538You do not need to remove any plastic at all. Simply position your jack pad in the center of the indentation as seen in video. The plastic shield is already against cross member and it’s designed to be used as is without having to remove it.
@@NamHoang-wn6zp I see. Well I didnt want to scratch my wife’s new m40i even on the underside! We love it!!
@@jonasbaine3538 No need to remove the plastic cover - just place the hydraulic jack exactly in the center of that circular area and lift the entire front end then place good quality jack stands on the two jack points behind the front wheels and slowly lower the car onto the jack stands. Now you can safely work on the wheels, brakes, whatever on the front end. The demo just did that to demonstrate the massive steel cross member that’s behind the plastic cover.
Where did you get the tool for measuring the oil temp and how did it plug in? Great vid btw
Good work!
Thank you 🙏
That was helpful! Thanks!
That one screw is a giant pain in the ass, would agree if you can do it without detaching the sensor, you may save yourself a warning light
Very useful video, I just finished changing the oil in my wife's 2020 X3, really very simple, I used a 0w40 liqui molly, 5 liters was what I used, the reset was quite easy I saw in another video, thank you very much, I saved a lot of money
I’m glad to hear the video was helpful. That was the intent, to help viewers with a quick how-to. 👍
02.00 min......4 contact points 2 in front and 2 in the back. Many thanks for video.
Thank you 👍
Don’t forget to put it back inside the element, elements, elemento......😅
How do you check the oil level when there's no dipstick....?
I like the idea! Wish I knew this earlier!
What’s the other little filter looking compartment in the middle with the little orange ring
Oh man, that's nuts! Appreciate the video! I just bought a 2021 with about 32,000 miles and I don't see any record of the air filter being changed, so it's happening this week. Now I know I need a flexible driver thanks to you!
It’s not too expensive. Got mine from Amazon.
New pads on old rotors more often than not, cause new problems. ALWAYS resurface or replace the rotors.
The Oil was still perfect on my Alfa last oil Change is from 2016 and belive me Engine Runs Smoot quied perfect .
Very clean environment at work , Very informative, The camera is in good distance, Explanation nicely made, Thanks bro, One question: you mentioned that the router screw socket is 16 LN Is it a normal 16 LN Key ? Thanks
Hello. Thank you for the kind words. The rotor hold down screw is your normal 6mm allen key type socket.
why 0w20? Do you have a cold summer? should be at least 30, and preferably 0w40, fully synthetic
He’s going based off bmw manual
I got x3 2014 and my reset oil goes unsuccessful. Anyadevice?
Awesome my car slipped off the jack and ruined my radiator! So proceed with caution
Thank you so so so much. Your a lifesaver.
Glad you found this helpful.
Can I use Pennzoil Ultra Platinum 0w-20 in the X3?
Not recommended
Will void the warranty, I messaged pennzoil on Facebook and they said they don’t have any approved oils for bmw at this time.
thanks for making this video; i just bought a '21 X3; that tip on the end of the oil filter was a surprise to see which is different than BMW has used for many years.
Yes, a simple filter element like those used years ago would have been nicer. Thanks for watching.
Thanks for the clear video of drain and filter areas! Regarding the drain, I know with other makes (Mazda and Subaru) there was a single-use copper or aluminum crush washer used to make sure the drain plug sealed. I saw some copper around the drain hole - is there also a crush washer here?
Yes a new crush washer comes in your filter kit.
2019 BMW x5 40 i has the exact location , and fortunately there is no cover for the jack point very easy, a metal piece visible with 2 holes in it. Just in case someone was wondering about this specific model
Hmm… good to know. Thanks
Stupidest design imaginable every other MFG has a simple procedure.
Shouldn’t be this hard.
Lol this is pretty easy in the realm of German cars.
How many miles you had? I want to inspect mine, but i might as well change it.
I think at the time it had like 42k miles.
Thanks for the video I actually didn’t have to takeoff the air sensor Which is a good thing because it would probably set off a light on the dash and then I would have to go to the dealership and spend $100 to get them to shut the light off so I didn’t even mess with the sensor Those stupid sensors can be a nightmare
You’re fine as long as you don’t turn on ignition while disconnected.
How many quarts of oil does it take
5.25L
Nice house nice video 📹
Thank you 🙏
Just a quick question ... how much oil you should add in if you are low on oil ? ... it doesn't say how much to add on the screen
I’ve never had to do this but I would add 0.1 qt at a time. Over filling is not good for your engine.
You could have squeezed the caliper with an F clamp before taking it off to make room for the new rotor.
Installed by Lando Calrissian, administrator of Cloud City.
Hi. How do you reset the oil change so the service shows on the car’s screen/computer?
Please check out my video on how to reset your maintenance computer. ruclips.net/video/CtaYTD39ti0/видео.htmlsi=0LOl4osfsg66bUEd
thank you for making this vide. I am going to change my filter tomorrow.
Thanks for your video. Ordered the filter and will try shortly did you torque the bar that you loosened or just tightened a quarter turn past tight like you would with a normal bolt.
@solomonros with all things German, just do “good n tight” :)
Thank you for the clear instructions and information
Thank you Kenny.
How do we place the stands?
After lifting the front at the subframe as shown in video, you place stands at the front jack points behind the front wheels. There will be a rectangular plastic black jack point on each side.
Good DIY ! At time 2:01 shows floor jack cradle + hockey puck + wood block (2 x 4 ???), what size dimensions wood block is that? Thanks!
Hi good eye! My rubber pad for the cradle broke some years ago so I substituted it with a hockey puck. I then use the 2x4x6” to evenly distribute the weight of the car. Thank you.
@@diydaddy5092 I saw your other comment in different video, "I’ve owned BMWs since the 90s. I jack them all up from the rear diff. Make sure you use a rubber hockey puck on the jack pad.", do you also use the same 2x4x6" on the rear diff jacking spot? Thanks!
@@dinan53 for the rear diff, I skip the wood. I lift it using just the hockey puck since it’s gentler on the aluminum case. On the X3, I use a piece of wood lifting the front because it’s butted up against a steel beam covered by that piece of black plastic belly pan cover.
Excellent method to exchange trans fluid on these rigs! I'm at 127k miles and am planning to get it done soon, but would like to pull the pan and clean out inside and the magnets!
Can’t go wrong dropping the pan.
Good video, but please note that as per BMW’s recommendation the correct oil must meet the LL-17 FE+ for the 2018+ X3 G01 and a number of other vehicles that have the same engine. BMW branded, Liqui Moly, and a couple other manufacturers offer oil with this specification but it is more expensive than Castrol Edge 0W-20 LL-17 FE+ Advanced Full Synthetic Motor Oil which I recently bought (September 2023) from Walmart, at about half the price for 5 + 1 quarts.
With all due respect, I have never heard of engine damage as a result of not using BMW spec oil AND changing your oil on a regular basis. I believe it’s more important to change your BMW oil every 4-5k miles than worrying about if it’s BMW spec oil and let it sit in your crank for 12-15k miles like most BMW owners do cuz free maintenance. FWIW, I’ve owned BMWs for 32 years and all went over 100k with no engine/oil burning issues.
Well, I’ve also owned BMWs for many decades including an i8 that I serviced myself. The reason for the 0-W20 LL-17 FE+ full synthetic spec oil on the G01 X3 is related to the low viscosity requirements for that specific engine’s fuel economy performance and its ability to flow through tiny pathways in the engine to properly lubricate key components. It’s NOT the same as other Castrol Edge oils. Sure it’s better to change your oil than not to, but why not just use the exact spec oil if it’s available at basically the same price? That’s my preference as I’d rather minimize the risk of any damage that could occur by oil that is unable to properly lubricate key engine components because it’s not the right oil.
@@PH-md8xp Oil discussions always stir up lots of opinions/excitement. I respect your choice to use whatever you like. I’d just rather not go there. The whole point to the YT video was a brief how-to for those wanting to DIY. I’m not telling anyone what they should or should not use. To each his own.
Both of you are correct. For the X4 BMW does recommend LL17-FE+ but also they state an alternative can be used if the LL17 is not available. Alternate oils must meet API SL, SM, or SN. The one in the video does meet the SN spec. Not going into debate of what’s right or wrong here, just stating what’s stated in the manual.
Since we have high sulfur content in our gas in the USA, it is very important for this engine to use the BMW approved LL01, LL14, or LL17fe which stands for fuel economy. These bmw approvals are important because the approved oils are Low SAPS (sulfated ash, phosphorus, and sulfur) engine oils designed for vehicles with diesel particulate filters (DPFs) and three-way catalytic converters (TWCs) because they have lower levels of these elements than regular engine oils. These elements, also known as "ash-forming" elements, can negatively impact the performance and longevity of catalytic converters and DPFs. LL04 should only be used in Europe because their sulfur content in gas is much lower than ours.
Does this apply to 2018 X3 4 cyl also? Thanks
Yes, it’s the same setup exactly
Thanks
Where to see the right oil capacity for my engine? Google says it’s 10qw and 6qw but where to check what exactly? Does anyone know?
@bond4894 You probably looked up the wrong engine on Google. Search for the 2.0 liter engine if your X3 is a X-drive3.0i. The X-drive4.0i has 3.0 liter inline 6 cyl.
@@diydaddy5092 I got bmw x6 I found out it’s 3.0-liter turbocharged six-cylinder engine. Google says Capacity: 7.4 quarts (with filter). Should I put all 7.4 quarts?
@@ibond4894 No. There are a few variables such as Is your floor completely flat? Are you jacking up just the front or the entire car for the oil change? If this is your first time, I would put back 7 qts, then go drive to get up to temp then go to your OBC to check oil level. You can always add more. Overfilling is not good for any engine.
B48's [the n20 replacement] will consume a bit if oil, & the "ultrasonic oil sensor" has some leeway programmed Into it, so less smart people just don't start dumping wayy too much oil in their vehicle. After you drain, the change fill is 5.5 quarts. Not 5, 5 & some change, but 5.5. The rest stays in the turbo, it's reservoir, lines, etc.... So in actuality, your changing to a fresh filter and getting a little over half of your dirty oil out. Change Often. 3-5k max. Turbo 4 cyl. Higher compression, & hot to get the performance they wanted out of them. Coil over plug on older n20 versions had a habit of toasting under the cover within 50,000 mi.
Hi! Any tips for a filter housing cap that won't budge. I hate the fact it's plastic; I had a 27mm socket but it was a 12 tooth one; and it slipped once; I stopped trying and got a 6 sided 27mm deep socket; and it won't budge at all; I don't want it to slip with the socket; The dealer did it last; this is my first off warranty oil change and I'm running into a wall unfortunately. Already ordered a new cap; any method even destructive would be great! Lol
@raygonzalez7478 Ugh! Hate it when technicians go Neanderthal on nuts/bolts. If you’ve had no luck with engine warm then perhaps try FreezeOff. It’s for removing stuck fasteners. Spray just the cap portion when your engine is cold. The hope is the cold will shrink the cap enough to help break that seal. BTW are you using enough leverage e.g. longer socket wrench handle than 7”?
