1966 nixie tube transistorized calculator.

I'd like to show my all-transistors featured vintage calculator from 1966. Actually it's a rebranded Sharp Compet 30 in fully working state. It tooks me a whole 2 days restoration where I replaced a bunch of npn fast switching transistors and some dead germanium diodes. I checked every single component from its arrays of about 1200 diodes and 700 transistors and believe me, it was funny and fin...

Incredible.
More solder! Not enough solder! I like the hand drawn traces. Looks like new/old stock
How much was it back then? I'm guessing it might have been equivalent to the price of a car.
You should think about swapping out the electrolytics before they get too out of tolerance and blow out irreplaceable components.
Bro, do you even Steins Gate?
I recently came across a Sharp Compet 30-A missing it's power supply and I would love to rebuild it, however I have no idea what the voltages or pin-out is. If you Still monitor this I would love to hear from you.
Bottom panel removed, you should see a round-shaped bakelite connector to the power supply assembly. Black: GND Yellow: +12V White: -12V Red: 170V .. 180V not critical, unregulated. Outermost pot: +12V reg. calibration Innermost pot: -12V reg. calibration Compet 30-A power supply may be different.
Thanks for getting back to me! That's exactly the information I needed. :) The bakelite connector on my machine has matching colors. I had a feeling it would be +/-12v and around 180v.
Doesn't it use magnetic core memory? BTW there are about 650 transistors and 1600 diodes.
douro20 probably one card has a small core memory.
That is a beautiful machine! I really need to put up some of my own machines! I have a 1965 SCM Cogito 240SR that really needs to be shared with the world! :)
Wow, that is AMAZING ! Its amazing how they used the then-existing technology to try to build something that we take for granted these days.
Was that a spare Nixie tube I seen in the chassis @ 3:15?
Meravigliosa..... dove l'hai trovata, a qualche fiera? Complimenti per il restauro...
This must have cost a princely sum back in it's day
Try to divide 1 by 0 on it...
If that's all I gotta do for to get my hands on this beauty... Sure!
Lmfao Let me just pull out my calculator. *Pulls in luggage bag."
Proper electronics; ace. The circuit diagram must be the size of a cricket pitch!
Awesome !
Beautiful job! I just bought a Casio nixie calculator (1971) at a yard sale last weekend. I like the old calculators and have bought quite a few. This is my first nixie though. The technology on your 1966 unit was quite different then the 1971 one that I bought. But the nixie tubes them selves were the same. To fix your unit, how did you ever know where to start without a schematic! I'm impressed! -- Atco
Wonder why such many components failed. Yet it still looks very nice. OK you cleaned it but it's without a scratch like it was almost never used! I fully understand why you fell in love and fixed it. Have done the same myself although pocket calculators. Really a joy to wake them to life again...!
Is it DTL (diode transistor logic) gate ?
I can see it's made in 32nm :)
Imagine having to carry that around you in school all day.
Nah, they just kept their slide rules on them, that was the "pocket calculator" of the day.
Thanks for sharing this educational video. I´m an electronic technician. I love collecting vintage electronic. As possible as I can I try to make these electronic appliances work. In this calculator I can see pretty clear the germanium diodes and transistors. How could this calculator survive for all these years? Simply amazing!!
