Two reasons can be assumed behind a student's poor performance in an examination. 1. One is that he didn't study well for the whole year, 2.the other is that he studied for the whole year but he didn't study well the night before the exam. Now it is more acceptable and normal for a candidate who didn't study for a whole year to do poorly in the exam. This is an example of Occam's razor.
