The Tragedy of Arnold Sommerfeld the Wise
At the Nordfriedhof in Munich, the perhaps greatest physicist to never win a Nobel Prize is buried: Arnold Sommerfeld.
One of the most talented theoreticians of his time, Sommerfeld started his work as a professor with stints at the University of Göttingen and RWTH Aachen. He published a famous book on spinning tops ("Die Theorie des Kreisels", which my professors recommended to me as an undergrad) before being recruited by Wilhelm Conrad Röntgen to lead the Institute for Theoretical Physics in Munich. Today, this Institute is known as the Arnold Sommerfeld Center and is part of the LMU physics faculty. Throughout his time in Munich, Sommerfeld applied nascent mathematical methods to the b...

The Pinhole Principle
Просмотров 1927 месяцев назад
In the Cold War, the secret East German state police, the Staatssicherheitsdienst (or StaSi, for short) used a special needle eye lens developed by Carl Zeiss. The tiny aperture of F/256 allows you to spy through a keyhole. This lens is an interesting example of the pinhole principle. The term camera actually derives from the latin term “camera obscura”: lit.“dark chamber” 🎥🎞️ #photography #opt...
Test Cards and MTFs (or: how to measure resolution)
Просмотров 837 месяцев назад
Test cards were an essential tool in the analog television era because they allowed you to properly calibrate the colors, geometry and contrast, and allowed you to measure the resolution of cameras and televisions. But how do you measure resolution? This video tries to explain what the camera system is actually trying to reproduce: contrast changes. These can be measured using line pairs, and a...
What exactly is ISO?
Просмотров 987 месяцев назад
Next to the shutter speed and aperture size, digital cameras also have the ISO setting. But what is this setting exactly, and what does it allow you to do? At its core, ISO describes the relationship between the image sensor exposure and output image lightness. ISO is a measure for how strong the camera system amplifies the generated signal. Since all image sensors have a baseline noise, under ...
Does Resolution have a Limit? The Rayleigh Criterion
Просмотров 2,5 тыс.7 месяцев назад
But is there a fundamental physical limit to resolution? It turns out, there is. The physical resolution of any image is limited by the Rayleigh criterion, which is dependent on the wavelength of the light and the aperture diameter. It is connected to diffraction and is an important factor for telescopes and microscopes. This video also mentions the role of Airy disks 🎥🎞️#photography #optics #p...

This video has helped me to confirm what I thought may have been correct. I am a player in a Witcher TTRPG campaign and my character is from a region of the DM's campaign that has a German like language with a Common Speech score of 10. Therefore my character speaks with a thick accent and does not exactly have a vast repository of the Common Speech vocab. Thankfully I know just enough German to replace some English words with German ones to make my speaking flow less broken 😂

This was an awesome video! I too find it a bit tragic that Sommerfeld never won the Nobel prize, considering how many of his students did. I also love that quote that Einstein is quoted to have said (I think it's a variant of the one you had in your video): "What I especially admire about you [Arnold Sommerfeld] is the way, at a stamp of your foot, a great number of talented young theorists spring up out of the ground." He really did have that eye for spotting young talented physicists, I think anyone who can claim they mentored no less than 4 Nobel laureates can rest easy knowing their legacy extends well past their lifetime.

I'm brazilian, super late in my life I just fly out of Brazili with 30 years old (33 right now) with almost ZERO english or whatever, so I had to learn english (and italian) by myself and in a hurry. What I can "see" that with some words I speak like a german, others words sounding almost like russian, or scottish, american (I can't just say "WALTER", it is WATER and that's it), I had some difficulties even with my own language so I try some tricks to accommodate myself better and keep the pace as natural as possible. Nowadays, sadly, I don't have much people to speak english with, no Wetherspoon, no small talk. So I remember those 8, 9 months in South London and people getting almost crazy 'cause they can't figure out my accent (and as I take a certain amount of care with my fellow countrymen, I somehow avoided some situations). Speaking italian it's kinda the same thing, I can mimic some italian accents but some words, being a native portoghese speaker myself, sometimes it's difficult to hide. Now, in spanish, it's just difficult to try to speak properly.

I once told a German in the US, “Vielen dank.” He was so hurt. He asked me how I knew he was German, was his accent so bad? The more I said his accent was almost perfect, the more hurt he became. So I told him a story about how nice a German neighbor lady was, and he thought I was making it up. She used to paint our house for free because she said she was bored. He looked thoroughly offended. He said, “German people aren’t nice.”

The reson not to study there is that the research staff is not incentivised to teach. They usually do the bare minimum but still deliver hard exams. I had exams where I filled out only 1/3 and still got a 3.0 GPA because they had to adjust the grade so much. In the US teaching is actually enjoyable.

In American you can become a patent agent. You need a PHD in a science (math, physics, biology etc) and need to pass the patent bar, which is different from the general bar. A law degree is not required for this. Patent agents can write and file patents, respond to office actions and other things. They are employed by companies and law firms and generally work under a lawyer. The patent lawyer is someone who has a PhD in a science and also passes the bar exam. They can argue cases if infringement in court. They don't make as much as patent lawyers but make 150USD and up.

Love the topic. I was hoping you might get to talking about a certain pixel density being a physical resolution limit (like 250 ppi vs 500 ppi) etc. but I guess distance of view would matter. Or for cameras that a Fullframe with perfect glass couldn’t do xyz or gets diminishing returns after a certain point.

Note that this is only true for linear scattering. In other words it assumes that none of the light from one of the sources scatters off the other source. So *technically* it's not really an absolute limit. Though in practice imaging past the Rayleigh limit is pretty much impossible because it becomes really ill-conditioned.
