Foot pedal setup explanation
The song at the end of this video is a clip from Herd of Bison's song The Awakening, from the album Lord Buffalo. This is one of the hardest sections of the entire album because of the footwork that goes on, and it's always rewarding to get it right.
I get a lot of questions about the gear I use, so I decided to make some videos explaining each piece of the kit. Brace yourself, this is full on nerdery territory here, with backstories, explanations, demonstrations, and even clips from actual songs you can find anywhere you get music from.

The song at the end of this video is a clip from Herd of Bison's song The Battle, from the album Lord Buffalo. The unison at the end of the song is pretty nuts, and definitely helps show off some of the melodic possibilities the kit has. I get a lot of questions about the gear I use, so I decided to make some videos explaining each piece of the kit. Brace yourself, this is full on nerdery terri...

The song at the end of this video is a clip from the Herd of Bison song The Nomad from the album Lord Buffalo. It uses a lot of toms, and has a lot of activity across the whole kit, so it felt like a good choice to show off the drums a little bit. I get a lot of questions about the gear I use, so I decided to make some videos explaining each piece of the kit. Brace yourself, this is full on ner...

Now the secrets have been revealed, this should help explain what foot patterns are happening underneath of the hand patterns. Remember that this is simply a warmup, it is not meant to be the most musical thing I can play for this song, it's just me having fun while working on my limb independence.

The Nomad second half and The Summons drum playthrough
Excellent drumming sir. Beautiful drums. Love Luddies myself. Thx.
That's crazy man. I hope you start getting more subs.
What size is the Gong Drum (the far right one with the special hoop) and did you build it yourself?
Sounds great and definitely very Mancini inspired. I have more of the traditional left to right set up, but I do like to have floor tom to my left to have something to do there and break up the standard. Speaking of floor toms, some interesting choices you got there.
Yes indeed, if you find the Keystone X explanation video I describe what they all are. And yeah, whenever I scale down I try to keep one floor tom on my left to keep as many of the ambidextrous options open to me as I can.
Tony Williams-esque.
I love his tom work when he was playing the big yellow Gretsch drums. He often would often use tom 1 and tom 3, and then switch to tom 2 and tom 4, and it almost sounded like chords, but played on the drums.
Very cool man
What are the two lower china cymbals on your left...? They sound great, and sit nicely in the over all mix.... Thanks 👍
I think you're talking about the 20" Paragon Diamondback china and the 22" Crescent Element china. Are they the ones that have rivets in them?
Awesome!
That is a very "mike mangini-like" drum setup you got there
Yep, I definitely stole it from him, and I also definitely got addicted to it lol.
@@benlokutasmusicchannel5616 That setup is tailor-made for open-handed style of playing, ambidextrous drumming. Also, I really like the tuning of your drums
@@luislaureano228 Thank you very much! The cable hihat stands make a huge difference, they mean I can put the cymbals anywhere I want while pedal is where it normally is.
very good moment thanks Ben
Thank you very much!
Wow quelle fluidité
what a dream of a kit, simply beautiful. great playing too friend!
Thank you very much!
Does anyone else find "clicky" sounding bass drums annoying? Great playing, I just like my bass drums to sound "basey" not "trebley"
Yeah, I haven't quite dialed the production in yet for the bass drum, but I do need have both low end and click once I try to put it in a mix with the rest of the band, otherwise it's hard to hear the articulation of what's being played.
Mint Oyster sparkle! thanks man, I have the same kit and had no idea what the name of the wrap was :p
You're most welcome lol!
The kits sounds amazing. Love your drumming.
Really enjoyed that... Great playing 👍.
Thank you very much, I appreciate it!
cool
Thought I was watching 'Hoarders'. Great drumming but I'd love to see how much of the kit you'd leave at the house if you had a gig.
I'm glad you enjoyed the playing! As it happens, if I have opportunity to bring my kit with any of the 5 bands I play in, I rarely scale down the drums. My goal is always to play as melodically as possible, and this setup allows me to do that. Sometimes I scale down the number of cymbals, but usually I bring all 4 hihats, and at least 4 other cymbals with me. You can find examples of the kit I tend to travel with if you check out some of the other videos on my channel, and you can also find any other my bands by looking up either Herd of Bison, Walk Me Home, Enfierce, The Ugly Cowboys, or The Cuz.
cool! whats the dark hihat with holes on your left?
That's a customized version of the Sabian 18" AA sick hats. It's the same cymbal formula for the top and bottom cymbals, although the one on my left includes HH hammering and the aero hole pattern instead of what it is normally. The normal sick hats are the dark ones on my right for reference.
nice!
Smooth brother, kit be wild’n lol
For real lol, it's definitely a lot of fun to play.
Never listened to this song before but the algorithm brought me here. Nice playing bro! The gong ride is VERY COOL it was a nice surprise
Thank you very much! And yes, riding on the gong is always fun, it's such a nice sound to get to play on.
sick playing, also how do you get in there?
I move the trash kat drum out of the way, and then squeeze through in order to get in and out. Although now I've changed the room setup, so I no longer have to do that. If you look at the Lord Buffalo series of videos, you can see how things are set up now.
Really like those chinas. What make are they?
There's four of them in this video, all of them are Sabian. On my right above is the 19" Paragon china. On my left are the 20" Paragon Diamondback china, the 22" Crescent Element china, and a custom 22" version of the 19" Paragon china. I'm glad you like them, they're definitely a lot of fun to play on.
Nice playing dude
💥💣👌👌👌
tasty
very good , Ben , you are so melodic
Thank you very much! I try to use everything as purposefully as possible, so I'm glad it translates.
Amazing
2:14-2:32, soooo smooth. Like watching Carl Palmer!!! Symmetrical motions, like symmetrical appearances, are the thing we humans beings like best.
And symmetrical movements are fun to play as well!
very good choice Ben

Sorry about that, I was trying not to be boring lol. I'll make a series of videos going into detail within the next couple of weeks.
Wow! Amazing
Melodic drumming
Thank you very much, I really appreciate it!
It's like the musicians in Genesis, YES, and RUSH all got together and decided to make something incredible for the modern decade!
Excellent! Those are all good bands, it's good to be in that category.
Awesome open hands playing , really beautiful
Thank you very much, I love this setup. It gives so many possibilities to follow the rest of the music in unique and unconventional ways, as well as all the normal ways too.
Wow,,, this reminds me of that great band Cadillac Turdmaster General Jr.-- just Awesome.
Thank you very much!
I like your setup , Very good musicality
Thank you very much, stay tuned. Coming soon is a video where I go through everything that's in the setup.

Sounds great!
what's with the death stare at the camera?
Um, that's what happens when I look around while I'm playing?
Nice arrangement. Very similar style to myself so it really clicked. Great job. Rock on!
Sweet bro. I'll keep an eye out for more. Cheers
Go Ben! You’ve got a cool Danny Carey / Tool vibe happening here. 🔥
Fantastic playing!!! and cool video!!
That beginning strobe rate really worked out perfectly!
Dude, it did though! And the beacons on the chorus.
Definitely my favorite experience when the vibe shifts at 2:30
Definitely, also when the rap comes in along with the bass line. Love the funk it takes on.
