Picture-perfect waves, ridden by absolute shredders are everywhere these days. Now let’s be real, most of us did not grow up surfing and do not live in Hawaï. This channel is about sharing what surfing is really like for the average person.
I started surfing at 25 and live in France, so my reality involves a lot of subpar conditions, cold water and sometimes, when the stars align, some epic waves. But be it small, choppy or pumping, I don’t care. As long as I can drop in and do a turn, I am out there!

Really like your videos and the format. Can really relate to the level and thought process you're going through to progress :)
@@Thomas_Jv Thanks man that is such a nice comment! I am so happy you’re enjoying the videos. Where abouts are you surfing at?
@@maximebesson Vraiment pas très loin ahaha ;)
@@Thomas_Jv Aha j’avais pas reconnu le nom! Merci pour le soutien 🤙
Awesome bro! You’ll get there soon!
Yew man thank you! Hoping to get a proper one before 2025 🤙
Rushing is a hell of a thing 😅 You spend your beginner days learning how to pump not to get caught behind only to have to relearn how not to outrun sections when intermediate. To be fair, 95% of those waves looked like barely a one and done or kamikaze punts to the flats and maybe couple visions. Bet it looked firing from the beach and then... Carcavelos is exactly like that too 😅
@@inFAMOUSBeatsGFx It’s such a mental thing too! You know you should take some time to assess what the wave has to offer, but once you’re up your mind is telling you to just GO 😅 you’re right 90% of them were one-turn waves but one turn is better than none! Dude I’m guessing you get great barrels over in Carcavelos when it’s on, don’t you? And with how the coast looks like around it, I bet fall and winter are great there 🤙
I recently heard the quote: - beginners go straight - intermediates rush horizontal and sometimes back - advanced surfers surf the whole wave and do what the wave provides them
@@diquepiques3921 You’re absolutely right, thanks for the quote! How a surfer makes use of what the wave is providing with is definitely what separates intermediates and advanced 🤙
Perfect quote right here! I'm right in the middle …Wave reading letting me down from time to time
@@giovanniwilliams9349 The good thing about ocean knowledge is that as long as you’re getting out there, you’ll learn and get better. It’s all about gaining exposure 🤙
@@maximebesson 100%
I 've just turned 60 and haven't surfed for about 15 years sadly, but just watching your footage amped me right up. I felt a surge of adrenaline go through my body just like it used to paddling into a wave. .
@@johnh9200 Yew!!! I’m so happy you felt this way and stoked that you decided to write that lovely comment! It’s made my day, thank you. You should get back in the water if you can. Go chase those waves 🤙
@@maximebesson whereabouts are you surfing?
@@johnh9200 Mostly around Lacanau Ocean. I’m always going the extra mile from there to try and find an uncrowded peak. Where abouts were you surfing?
@@maximebesson I grew up and did most of my Surfing on Australia's Gold Coast, but only rarely surfed Snapper, Burleigh or Kirra, sticking to less crowded Beach Breaks.
@@johnh9200 Lucky you, Gold Coast 10 years ago sounds like quite the dream! Even now if you’re still living there, I really hope you’re able to make it back in the water, a ton of people wish they were living in surfing heaven like you 🤙

how there is no one out ?? crazy .
@@SokoSurfCo I got lucky that day! But it’s a 100+km uninterrupted stretch of beach anyway, so it’s pretty easy to find a quiet sandbar 🤙
Ive been getting better at hitting the lips and doing snaps on waves its really fun definately one of the funner manouvers and isnt to hard once you get the hang of it
@@richadsotad Dude congrats on that progression it’s definitely a massive step in surfing! My coach says I’m going to have some real fun once I start hitting that lip, hopefully I’ll be where you’re at soon 🤙
@@maximebesson With the progression youve been doing it wont be long 🤙
@@richadsotad Thanks a lot for the support mate!
damn, i'm definitely guilty of pumping until it closes out. Thanks very informative.

Nice video! What board are you using?
@@nobinobiboyz6931 Thank you man! Board is a 5’10 from Decathlon, 30L and it goes in anything 🤙
@@maximebesson I noticed it looked pretty easy to paddle into waves! Awesome
@@nobinobiboyz6931 that’s right! It’s got that groveller shape and heaps of volume, super easy paddle-ins 🤙
@@maximebesson I’ve been looking for something like that. Either a middy that is able to perform like a short board or a short board that has the ease of a middy. Haha
@@nobinobiboyz6931 maybe a good mid length because it’ll guide you to perfect technique! You can sometimes get away with improper technique on the skatier short boards, but you also can duck dive it a lot easier
Nice bro ! Seeing the improvement in every video. Next time try and take off behind the peak, that will give you time to properly set into a barrel
@@levyromphotography7845 That is such a nice thing to say thank you! Appreciate your advice too, I do tend to be on the shoulder, I’ll try paddling behind the peak and backdoor the section next time 🤙

hey Maxime, just wondering... I'm thinking about upgrading to the same board you have but the 6'1 version (olaian)... I'm aiming to improve my turns coming from a 7 foot softop (also from olaian, which feels a little bit easy at the moment). Would you say it would suit me? Love your videos btw
@@matisanchez Hey man, thank you so much for your comment! I would say the most natural transition from the soft top would be the 6’4 hybrid board from Olaian. But the classic short board (not the performance one) is also a great choice! Just make sure the 6’1 is the one you need based on your weight (if you’re below 75kg, go for the 5’10) 🤙
@@maximebesson thanks man, that helps a lot! Keep killing it with ur videos
@@matisanchez No worries, hope you’ll have fun with your next board 🤙
hey man, id love to camp and surf next to that spot, seems intermediate friendly haha, do you think it’s possible ? if yes id love some tips and why not share a wave together 🤙🏾
@@jonathann-gs544 Hey mate! You’ve got loads of camping options along the coast (from Lacanau down to Biscarosse) which is where I mostly surf. DM me on instagram if you’d like more information 🤙

@@Frankieeeeeeeeeeeeeee As clean as it gets 🤙
hey maxime just another question did you learn to surf on a shortboard, or how long did it take for you to progress to an intermediate?
@@CooperStandring Hey mate! I learned the basics on a foamie as a kid, and then picked it up again for a few months in my late teens. I then bodysurfed for several years. When I really got back into surfing 2 years ago, I moved onto a 6’4 Bic surf board. I wasn’t a complete beginner but I’d say it’s taken me a few months to really get comfortable! 🤙
@@maximebesson thanks Maxime I’ve only been going a year I’m using a 6’ with about 40 litres atm progressed down from a longboard to a minimal and then a 6’6 hard top with almost 50l and now onto the current 6’ board I’m on now
@@maximebesson I’m not sure whether I progressed down to quick or not
@@CooperStandring I don’t think you did! As long as your wave count stays high, you’re good. 40L must be plenty enough to get into waves easily! 🤙
@@maximebesson I do get into waves easily but most of the waves I lose my balance on the pop up like I get my feet on the board and it goes flying out underneath me, and I still don’t know how to turn or pump a surfboard which I need to learn do you think I just stick to my 6’ board to learn turning and pumping or I have a 7’2 bic board mini mal that my might be better to start Learning to turn and pumping what do you think?
