Star Fisheries Visit - Hand selecting fish
Easy to do, do it more. Totally agree.
This is always been my way of approaching things to do with any fish keeping. I keep marine as well and use this approach there. Thanks for watching and the comments!
All looks good to me mate? Don't overthink things; it can be expensive ;)
You’re right there! I try to keep costs down but things can get expensive quick!
I’m only a couple of minutes in but I can help you with your blanket we problem. Blanket weed is not a problem it’s actually a photosynthesising plant so it’s really good for your pond. Also you noticed that your fish were displaying breeding behaviour but if you don’t have any surface for them to lay their eggs on The blanket weed is a good surface of a love laying eggs on. I would recommend that you buy some gravel wash it and then put at least 2 inches in the bottom of the pond. Secondly, you need to plant the pond up with pond weed of the oxygenating type. Horn wart is great as it is free floating as it grows. It will use up the nitrates in the pond and help balance the pond. Another good oxygenator is Canadian pondweed (elodea Canadensis). You could even put a couple of small watermelons in there. All of the surfaces will attract nitrifying bacteria which will reduce the potential for ammonia or nitrogen spikes in a natural way without using chemicals. What you can’t see is a microbial life, there will be billions of micro organisms living in the pond if you let it develop naturally Whenever you get an algal bloom, it’s a sign that nature is trying to redress the balance for you. That blanket weed that you removed is really good fertiliser for your vegetable patch or your flowers and plants and chuck it away. Put it on your garden. If you get the balance right you won’t need any filters in your pond, I once kept a goldfish called Barney alive for 12 years in a large flower pot. I never fed him and there were no filters of any kind other than natural gravel and plants in the pond Barney became quite tame but sadly in the deep freeze about 10 years ago, he froze to death When the pot iced up completely …. I should’ve moved it into my garage but I was away for a week when the freeze hit. Bare this in mind. I know the winters have been mild in the UK recently, but if a freeze comes make sure you keep the water moving or put an inflatable ball on the surface of the pond and let the air out and deflate it to expose area of surface water. Good luck.
Wow, I want to first thank you for taking the time to write so much! I really do appreciate all the input I get from people watching my videos. It’s a massive reason I make them in the first place. I definitely see your points regarding planting up the pond and this providing a way to balance out the pond as well as somewhere for eggs to be laid. I think next summer I will take your advice and add lots of oxygenating plants! Also I had not heard of the watermelon trick, very good advice. Thanks again I really appreciate it!
May I ask what part of the uk youo are in.
I’m in the south east, this footage was shared with me by a friend in the states.
Pearlscale goldfish are my favourite variety.
They are a unique variety! Thanks for watching!
The overall quality of the wakin and Bristols defnintly stood out to me. Some real nice fish
I would agree! I think I’m going to get some Bristols next time, I was very impressed by their colours at the show! Thanks for watching!
That’s fascinating! I appreciate you sharing this. Look forward to more… I’m subscribing! 👍🏻
I’m glad you liked it! And thank for the sub! More videos on the ay soon :)
Spectacular specimens to see. I wish I owned a couple of them for sure !!!
There were so many amazing fish! Well done to all the breeders!
Thanks for this vid I’m on day one of doing the same thing . Hopefully mine will pull through . So around a week that’s good to know. 👍
Fingers crossed for you! Really hope they do! Meth blue does seem to be a good product!
@@fatheadedfish I’m on day two think there is an improvement . Mine is a panda oranda huge sore on her under belly she’s only a baby so I hope it does fix it . came out of nowhere and at one point I though I don’t think I can beat it esp as antibiotics are hard to get unless u pay huge vet bills. So gave the blue a go . I did same as you direct on to the ulcer . And dips . I’m wondering if she scratched her belly on an ornament or on gravel so I’m changing to sand Base substrate and hope this is a one off . Once again thanks for your vid always good to learn from someone who has walked the path 👍
I really hope it works for your panda! Lovey fish. Meth blue has always been good for me. If could have scratched itself for sure you have to be really careful with objects in tanks and fancies! Good luck!
Oh no.. That is a shame .. great growth .. bright colours
Such a shame! Apparently they have plans to predator proof it next year! They did grow in there though!
Fantastic Video!🧡✨️
Cheers mate! Good seeing you at the show and your amazing fish!
Brilliant. Thank you
I’m glad you enjoyed it!
Looks a great show. Did they have Tamasaba ?
It really was great. You know what I dont think there was any there, one of the few varieties that wasn’t there. I’m going to another in a few weeks so I’ll make sure to keep my eyes out for some! Thanks for watching!
@@fatheadedfish I currently have about 1000 fry, hence the ask 🤣 I didn't realise they had shows, like they do koi, so ut could be something for me in the future. I look forward to seeing more of your videos.
@@lorraineskelding4923 amazing! How old are the fry? Yes there are several shows a year. This one is by the AMGK The Association of Midland Goldfish Keepers.
@fatheadedfish they are 6 weeks old. Accidental spawning at beginning of Augusst. I planned on breeding them next year, so this is my learning curve on development, etc... loving learning, though. Didn't have any goldfish till May. Now have 26 adults for breeding stock.
@lorraineskelding4923 Niceeee! well done for raiding them so far! you have had to learn fast! It’s good fun! I may pick up some Tamasaba at some point.
I think you should have got a bonus prize for the massive poo lol!
I agreed! The size of it means it’s surely worth a few points! Ha ha. Nah seriously next time I’ll have to not feed for a couple of days, I didn’t know that was a thing!
I would definitely take that male wakin goldfish too. Omg amazing Bristol Shubunkin. I wish they were available here Congratulations on the third prize I really enjoyed this
Thanks mate! Yer there really were some amazing fish there! Great to see them all in one place!
How big is your fish room
I’d say around 3 metres x 3 metres. Not very big haha!
Clover leaf blanket answer always sorts my string algae out. Good stuff
Thanks you for the advice! And thanks for watching :) I’ll give that a go in the future.
Korea .not English. but you goldfish very good. you goldfishfam Ranju good/ 금붕어를 좋아하시나 봅니다.

Thank you!
Thank you So much For showing these fish I've been trying to raise them for years They're 1 of my favorites But you never see anybody Talk much about them Again Thank you for taking the time.
Ahh thanks a lot for the comment. I’ve collected this footage over a number of years and I thought it was worth putting in the time to showcase this variety! Good luck with your fish!
Nicely done profile my friend Some nice ones coming up. I didn't know it took that long for the eyes to turn upwards It's great to get help from others Full view!
Thank you! Appreciate it! Wanted to showcase this unusual variety :)
Looks good!
Thanks mate!
Please update
Will do mate!
Super cool
Are you going to keep us updated on the progress of the eggs to fry?
Great video 😃
Thanks a lot :)
The spawning male is top class
He’s lovely isn’t he..think he’s my favourite!
Not hard to breed goldfish just put in spawning mops take them out to another container airated eventual you will have fry. My ponds are alway full of fry without trying. they get eaten or go through the pump to the filter.
I know it’s great isn’t it! Hopefully this is the first of many and I can produce some good quality fish! Thanks for watching!
@@fatheadedfish best of luck but I'm sure you won't need it when your successful post on page be interested to se your results.
@garystone5746 thanks! I will make sure I do :)
Congratulations!
Thanks mate!
👍 sweet
Great video .. looking forward to seeing more! 👌🏼
Will keep you updated for sure!
👍👍
I’m new to the hobby, so I’ve not seen this before..it’s fascinating, thank you
It is amazing to watch! Will be interesting to see them grow, thanks for watching :)
brilliant mate really interesting looking forward to see how they progress well done
Fingers crossed it goes well! I’ll be sure to keep filming!
You need to use a viewing tank or basket to get proper reflection of quality size
Yes I would completely agree! Maybe next time!
Nice
Thanks!
try blanket answer
Fantastic Video Mate!! Thank You!✨️🧡
Glad you enjoyed it! Thanks for all the help!
Great video.. nice info and credit to great breeders I actually had some pearl scale many many years ago Wow those dragon eye crown pearl scale ..
Yes they are pretty amazing! Thanks for the comment!
I would assume filtering should go least dense to densest, so the biggest particles are stopped by one layer, then smaller bellow and smaller bellow that. If you have filter floss on top, it's stopping everything before it even gets to the sponges, they're still growing good bacteria though so it might not matter if you're doing matenance (replacing the floss) often enough :)
You know what, I think you may be on to something there haha. Now you mention it was set up with floss underneath the other two layers of sponge when I bought it originally. Sometime you juts need sometime else to have a look at see what you’re doing wrong. Thanks a lot :)
That flowering shrub above the pond is called a weigelia.
Amazing. Thanks for reminding me of the name. Think it needs a trim this year! And thanks for watching :)
love your red and white wakin mate there stunning. i added some wakin and Watonai to my pond earlier this year. id suggest getting a bigger filter with the stock you have you will find maintenance and issues far less think overkill i can highly recommend the lotus clearpond 5 stage filters i've been running mine for well over 10 years and never had any issues i use the clearpond 18 for 1000ltr pond so is overkill but is trouble free. keep the videos coming mate
Hello mate, thanks for the comment I really appreciate friendly feedback and advice I will definitely take that on board. I’ve actually seen a few large kockney koi filters, multi bay system s going second hard but will definitely look into the lotus. Lots more videos in the works as well :)
great video fish are looking well :)
Thanks :) glad you enjoyed it! Seems like there is always something going on with a pond!
👍👍
Cheers :)
love your vlogs mate, hes an idea for ya put the net half way up the pond so you have ya pond half covered so you get best of both worlds you stop alot of the debris going in to the pond and you have your area were you can spend time with you really nice goldfish without the net yeah the odd bit would get in the pond but it better than all of the blossom going into the pond
Thank you really appreciate the feedback :) nice to hear. I think I may just do that. Definitely need to spend some time e time looking at the fish in all there glory! After all that’s the point of the pond! I’ll half cover it and see how it goes! Luckily think there will be less stuff falling in my pond now…until autumn haha
Hey this is brilliant you did an amazing job
Thank you! Really appreciate it!
Wakins look very impressive. I love my ranchus but I think these would be a more healthy version of a goldfish for the long term.
Yes Wakin are definitely one of my favourite fancy goldfish varieties. Very strong fish but still interesting patterns and shape.
