    I see a lot of people making similar comments, so I'm compelled to leave a comment of my own... even if most of these comments are several years old. Out of context, this might sound like advice or a motivational speech, but if you've seen the film, you'd know it represents the exact opposite. By the end, if I remember correctly, he’s unable to deliver his speech because he realizes he’s been wrong-especially about people and relationships. It’s a brilliant film that, much like Fight Club, deeply explores the philosophy of individualism. And, just as in Fight Club, people often miss the point: the film doesn't glorify or endorse the views of its main character. Instead, it builds them up only to tear them down. Tyler Durden is the villain of Fight Club. While he makes some valid points, he’s ultimately wrong. The same goes for George Clooney's character in Up in the Air. He makes solid arguments, but no matter how much he tries to distance himself from others, he ultimately craves human connection-showing that even someone like him, at their core, longs for genuine relationships, just like the rest of us.

But I hope I can each him. I am the only one in my family that doesn't have the Hoarding Gene and I thank God for that.

    When it comes to material things, i get it. But had we not slowed down for others, looked after those in our tribe, we wouldn't have survived living among natures most ferocious beasts and natural calamities to see the present day. We would have been extinct a long long time ago. Live the life you want, but let's not act like humans were built to be self serving the way this character is leading you to believe. When I was a lot younger, this scene did appeal to me as young people are often easily influenced by entertainment. Then you get older, you grow wiser, become more perceptive. You learn that it's really the swan in us that that makes us special, and it's the swan in us that could have saved the world. Unfortunately most do believe - we're not swans. We're nomadic solitary carnivores that live by power and consumption, moving from one place to another in search of better feeding grounds to seize for ourselves.

    This movie really put life in perspective. I watched this movie in theatre when it first came out and this speech has always stuck with me. For the longest time, I’ve always relate to this speech. My life has always been on GO and I never cared nor did I want to commit to anything serious because I did not want it holding me back, but for what? I was 22 then and will be turning 36 in a week. Now I can honestly say that this isn’t what I want nor is it something I support. I come back to hear this speech every now and then to reflect on the changes and growth I’ve made in my life…. Because life truly is better with company and everyone needs a co-pilot.

I have a few good friends in the US and few good friends overseas but generally I take life as it comes and dont know what I will be doing 6 months or a year from now. but I keep a positive attitude. • @themightyquyn
    @themightyquyn Год назад

    Maybe it's just me, but so many people here are interpreting this scene incorrectly because they are focused on the material-side of the backpack. He's literally advocating not having any relationships because they hold you back. Dude had thinly veiled depression but was projecting independence to hide it. If I was a psychologist I would say he had textbook avoidant personality disorder. We know this, because he gave into Alex and when that relationship turned sour it reconfirmed all of the beliefs he had about attachments to people. I mean, there's a whole montage at the end with people talking about how relationships got them through tough times. Ryan doesn't have that, but the irony is we learn the value of relationships through his loss. This wasn't meant to be an uplifting speech.

      "and when that relationship turned sour it reconfirmed all of the beliefs he had about attachments to people." Yes. It proved his original conclusion to be right. At least, right for him. I don't get how wanting to avoid relationships in such a scenario is a disorder.

    • @themightyquyn
      @themightyquyn Год назад

      @@Zartoo_3rd_Overlord_ofBlargon7 I didn't name it a disorder, the DSM V did. The argument/thesis the writers are making is "relationships are important". The irony is, he claimed attachments hold you back from achieving your goals. But when he reached his ultimate goal and got his million mile flight status, he didn't really care anymore because he had no one to share it with. We learn the value of relationships because he doesn't have any. If having no relationships is your thing, have at. There are people who genuinely like being alone. But let's not pretend the exception is the rule.

      That was very intuitive of you. I agree. I also think Ryan has a certain level in comfort in the way he lives and doesn't like change and as a matter of fact he abhors the very idea of it. He has left everything in his life, including his family behind him and if not for his sister nagging him about the younger sisters upcoming marriage would never return to them. He is depressed but comfortable with life. Comfort doesn't equal happy but is a very strong substitute.

      Good relationships make people happy. Toxic people of course do more harm. However that’s even scientifically proven that social connections make you live healthier and happier, and longer than having few friends. Not taking into account that good strong weak connections let you grow personally and professionally. This speech doesn’t have any scientific or whatever basis so it’s just like sermon - you either believe it or not

    I think many people miss the point. Our lives are full of junk and people we don’t need. Quality and not quantity people. Having worked in cancer wards, spinal units and domestic violence units, I have met so many people full of regret for not doing more with life. We get caught up worrying too much about what other people think of us instead of what we think of ourselves. Money and possessions are pointless.

      I too once thought like this. Then I lost my income source and my housing shelter soon thereafter. It sounds real nice to say you don't need money, but the unfortunate reality of our sick world is that money buys you security and safety. Other people do not provide those things. Quiet the contrary, it is people who are actually the most likely reasons for you to lose that aforementioned security and safety: Coworkers will not hesitate to throw you under the proverbial bus if their emoyment is ever threatened. Lovers will not hesitate to leave you when they find someone cooler/richer/higher-status than you and have an opportunity to trade up. Neighbors will not hesitate to call and report your lawn grass is too long, resulting in you receiving a fine from the city. No, my friend. Ryan is quite correct here. The mistake is to think that people will have your back. Yes, a scant few do exist, but the majority are at least indifferent or even antagonistic towards your goals and dreams in life. Relationships are liabilities. We would all do well to protect ourselves from being harmed by them.

    People would take every single part of the speech literally and wouldn't comprehend the metaphor as a whole, it seems like Asperger is hitting very hard these days. If you didn't watched the movie then don't bother to make a statement, if you do, ask yourself; why? Why this man would say such thing? What is his purpose in life?, what drives him to do seminars about the topic? and what is the importance of not being centered about material possesions and most importantly, relationships? is it because is heavy, or is it because we don't like to make commitments or to stick with persons that dissapoint us in the end? Or is it that some people VALUE one thing over a bunch of many other things? The movie itself has a deep message about all these manners of seeing life, the perspective and how implement it despite the job he has that suits very well in the importance of personal relationships and solving things in a "human way." That's the paradox. There's a exquisite scene about the value of TIME. This man travels alone with a few things in his wallet, credit cards, membership cards, VIP access... but that's a valuable concept that allows him to be in the best places and in consequence to meet the best people. He sees himself as someone who is very valuable, he could even be very selfish and leave things aside as having a family or to bond with his sisters. The journey is about keep learning even when you think you have it solved, and how you miss certain things in the experience of discovering yourself. Even though the filosophy could be dangerous, it teaches to not being attached on anything or anyone but the moral is about to deal with both things before is too late.
