Definitely the waves. Vibrations front to back & side to side, made for a tipsy ride. I used to get car sick as a kid from hilly rides too. 🐔 I have to meditate on plane rides. I've probably had listeria from Kroger salads, McDonald's burgers, subway sandwiches, and a tube of braunschweiger over the past couple of months. Seems like it's everywhere these days. Foil pack helped keep the bad stuff out. Also waited a good hour between lighting the fire and cooking the burgers. I had some compressed sawdust logs (no glue) around the duraflame and added some local tree limbs to the fire. Good point though about the offgassing of waxed logs. I used to burn stained scraps from my wood trim & flooring planks down to coals and then cooked above them.

Good question. There's the lack of the loading feeder on the top, and being a good 160+ years old, I'd suspect it has had a lil touch up work along the way. I'd be curious to see what Google has to say about it. I've got a lime kiln coming up in a video a month from now. You may enjoy that one when it comes out. Thanks again for watching

I've got several of their shelters. The Redcliff was my first from SeekOutside. Had it since 2015, but haven't used it much lately as I've also got the 16 man, 8 man, Cimmaron, Guardian, Eolus, Silvertip, Silex, and most recently the Courthouse. @@MikeycatOutdoors Wow, that's a lot of money. Those are not cheap by any means, but they seem very legit. Would definitely love to see more stuff. I, myself, am hoping to get the 12 man sometime in the future. But I'm not very rich, lol, so I've got to wait quite a while until I do so. I want the 12 person because I want to be able to park my motorcycle in it when I go out. It looks big enough to do that and is roughly around the same weight as the mototent from lone rider. I'm just not so willing to pay big bucks towards something that doesn't even state where it is made. It looks cool and all, and I even was considering it for some time... but I just kept looking and found these tipis and am just loving them. Anyway, thanks for the reply and hope to see more stuff in the future.

@@MikeycatOutdoors It was a 1-day hike, but we had been in Jackson Falls already for 2-nights. The guys that had been in the Troop for a while said it was the best outing we had been on.

Health permitting, I want to hike back out there to the waterfall. It'd be kinda neat to camp out at Chabanel out there. My son was at that one in 23.

Probably a combination of the white outer color, plus the silver unblocking interior would help to keep the inside of the tent relatively cooler since the exterior would reflect heat away. I don't think it'd be a huge difference inside from the outside air temperature, except to feel like a partially shaded spot. I don't typically set up my hot tents in the summer months, but I do know that white tents are usually not heat absorbing ovens compared to other colors in the summer. As for silver, I tried reflective blankets and windshield covers on the exterior of tents before and it worked to keep things from heating up inside the tents I was in at the time. (I was working nights at the time and needed to catch up on some sleep in the mid-morning.) You'll still need ventilation though. Summer is still summer. Grass holds humidity. It could still get musty humid inside if everything is sealed up. That's about all I know on the science of it. Thanks for asking and thanks again for watching. ;)

@@MikeycatOutdoors well where i camp in summer, isn't exactly hot, unless you're going full july/august, generally my favourite place makes -7° beginning of September. Anyway, exactly what i thought about the silver but nor sure about the white (see the coleman dark room with also dark colour outside), the only thing i don't like is that I cannot find the wintwr inside to substitute the summer one. With a net i can freeze in Morteratsch.

When it's AYCE fried chicken and all the sides served family style you definitely want to come with an appetite and plenty of time to enjoy a leisurely meal. Ideally it would be nice to stay overnight at the park afterwards. I just checked out the GCL website and see that the price is $17.99, so you definitely want to get your money's worth. All-in-all, though, that price probably isn't out of line compared to other places. Shoot, I went to Burger King with a coupon for free whopper and by the time I bought the obligatory fries and drink I still paid close to $6. The GCL also has AYCE fish on Friday night as well. That looks mighty good too.

Yep. I own the size large in both the green and blue colors. My torso length is about 19.5" (medium backpack for reference) and my legs are short. My weight currently varies between 175-190, depending on the season.

My first stove ever was a 2 burner Coleman propane stove. I used that thing for a few years when I was a teen. It was a bit heavy though. I cooked a lot on it. When my buddy who moved away came to visit one time when I was about 16, he was into the ultralight stuff. He had an MSR. I eventually sold off my two burner stove and got the grey Peak One stove. I've had that stove for over 30 years. When I was in college, I purchased that bulky safesport alcohol stove from the sportsman's guide. I used to have a sterno stove back in the day too. The best part, like anything else I buy these days, is they're coming out with an improved version with 8k video, larger battery, and an optional control module. I just saw the ads for it this weekend.

Do anything fun over labor day weekend? My daughter and I went to the LBL after stopping by Murray.

@@MikeycatOutdoors Unfortunately, didn't get out over the weekend. Drove down to Murray State University to pick up a friend of my daughter. Spend the better part of Monday grilling BBQ for a family gathering. That was good & we had way too much to eat too. Still have a mini Lemon Ice Box Pie to finish off though! :) Have a couple vacation days coming up next week I'm burning & again in October. Hoping to line things up and actually to get out again.

Although, I think you tend to escape to the woods on Tuesdays if I once heard correctly. 😉 Just got a bum right shoulder at the moment limiting my movements. No scratching my back or boxing Sasquatch til I get physical therapy for it. We stayed at the Holiday Inn on Friday and grabbed some pasta from Mr B's. While my daughter was visiting her bf, I dilly dallyed around at Buchheits and Kroger, before driving around the town a bit and picking her up on campus by 2pm. My LBL footage should be coming later in October once I edit it and upload it in the queue.

With a traditional gathered end hammock, for a flat lay, you need to lay at a diagonal, so you're not laying like a curved banana. Some gathered end hammocks are asymmetrical (head left, foot right, for example), or symmetrical (either head left or head right don't matter) in design. Once you are on a diagonal, you flatten out. In a typical bridge hammock, the bars splay out the weight distribution a bit in the shoulders across the width of a bridge hammock to prevent shoulder squeeze. In other bridge style hammocks specifically made for backpack camping (ie, Warbonnet Ridgerunner & Dutchware Banyan Bridge), the structure incorporates bridge poles and grosgrain webbing to stiffen up the structure of the hammock for a flatter lay. The closest thing to this is an Amok Draumr hammock which also incorporates an inflatable sleep pad as part of the structure of the hammock to give it rigidity and a flatter lay. For the Haven XL, the pad acts as a secondary stiffener for the structure of the hammock. A few people I've talked to that have owned Havens for awhile say they get great sleep in them. The tru lay stiffer pad I selected was supposed to provide a more rigid support for the back than the original pad. Now, obviously, any body weight is going to cause a minor amount of catenary curvature to one's back even in an air pad, as this thing isn't sitting on a tent floor, but suspended in mid-air. When I had the pad filled good & solid, the straps eventually set a little tighter and up higher off the ground, it seemed to lay better than my initial attempt at setting it up. This is about as close to sleeping in a cot for a flat lay as you'll probably get from a hammock. If you need it any flatter, find a tile floor or a piece of plywood, because body weight is concentrated in a person's torso. The pad helps distribute the weight. Sean "Shug" Emery and Old Goat in the Woods (Cary) are two folks I've talked with who own one of these if you want their opinions as well. They are also on RUclips and show theirs in a couple of their videos. They're the ones that kinda convinced me to give the Haven a try. If you're looking for a good lightweight backpacking bridge style hammock, I'd still go with the Warbonnet Ridgerunner as it's a bit lighter in weight than the Haven or the Amok Draumr. But with the Ridgerunner, you'd still need an under quilt for keeping your back warm at night. The pad in the Haven is insulated and performs that function too. Hope it helps. Definitely a True Flat lay. I used regular hammocks for years & always enjoyed them. But as the years add on, my knee injury from the time in the Army flares up from time to time, more so after being bent like a banana. I saw this hammock & was very intrigued. I originally just got the hammock, not the pad because I already had an insulated hammock pad and even with that - I got the BEST sleep I had ever had in a hammock. My wife tried it on one of our outings & by the following week she had one too. Since then, we both purchased the Haven XL Insulated Pad and that made the comfort level even better. As for Customer Service, after one of my outings I noted a small tear happening dead center of the hammock. I let them know & they promptly exchanged it. I was amazed. I can't swear by this thing enough. I will admit, I use a different set of hammock straps (they are certainly longer & hold 2k lbs - no I ain't that big) and I use a larger 10'x12' tarp so I can vary to a different setup if I have to. I love my creature comforts when camping, like my high back pack chair, and this hammock will certainly be joining me every time.

The storage bag is a 12"x12" drawstring sack. The contents are roughly packable down to 12"H x 10"W x 6.5" thick. There's also an inner nest option that packs down to roughly 12"H x 9"W x 6" thick. Hope that helps.

That stretch between PM and Grafton is hilly. Tunnel Hill is fun, but I don't go there enough. Nice gentle grade but my butt hurts after 18 miles of that. lol. Madison county has lots of bike trails around Edwardsville, Glen Carbon, etc that go all the way to Pontoon Beach and elsewhere. They're fun but lots of people walking on them. St. Clair county expanded its bike trails in the past couple of years since the pandemic. The originals that follow the MetroLink in Belleville go from Walmart/SWIC to the old parts of Bellevegas, past Memorial hospital, and all over. Then, there's some new ones over by Scott Troy road, I think...I remember seeing some closer to Scott AFB in the Shiloh area when I was out that way test driving cars around Christmas. They expanded the bike/walking paths along Old Collinsville Rd in Belleville, which is what this is near. Since they converted over the golf course, I figured it was worth a look. My wife is hooked on that restaurant now though...she wants to go back. lol. Speaking of my better half, she's been looking at new bikes lately. Dunno. She may think it's too "buggy" or not enough bluffs or creeks to her liking. When you first walk the trail, it does feel like walking a gauntlet a little bit as you're weeded in on both sides. My only issues were a local letting his two large dogs (now one dog) run loose through the property. And, the sinkhole has expanded several times to the point where it's kinda dangerous to walk close to it anymore. (I slipped and slid, & almost fell in last year.) Thanks for watching. :)

The lake has 10mph speed limits posted. Not to say they actually know how fast they are traveling but it's under 20mph for sure. No 50mph speedboats that I ever witnessed. Any motor boat wake is like an ocean wave to me in that tiny kayak. Remember, I swim like a rock. 🪨 Lake wakes are usually calmer than river wakes from my experience. Fishermen are usually more respectful of wakes than river party hounds.

Matthiessen (in 2 weeks) wraps up the series. It was really scenic. There's so many more canyons to explore up there. I'll have to go back again. (Just like the Red River Gorge) They actually have a river kayaking tour of the Starved Rock area on that area of the Illinois River.

I've shortened them over the past year or so. I have an hour long hike on the Appalachian trail from 2022 in my Playlist. There's also a couple of longer ones from a two day hike on the Red Cedar trail from about a year & a half ago. 😀 Thanks for watching.

@@MikeycatOutdoors Starved Rock is always a great time. The Indian Caves is in Burobonnais Illinois right behind Perry farms park. It is a really nice, short, but cool water hike. Bring water shoes and trekking poles.
