February 2025 Chinese Truck Farmers Laura Ng
In the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries, many Chinese immigrants in inland Southern California labored on Chinese-operated truck farms known locally as “Chinese gardens.” These vegetable farmers provided a variety of fresh produce to Chinese and non-Chinese urban residents. A landscape archaeology analysis of Chinese-operated farms around the cities of Riverside and San Bernardino reveals that Chinese truck farming shaped the built environment in both the United States and China, anti-immigration laws impacted the movement of Chinese laborers without American citizenship the most, and that vegetable farms became part of a racialized landscape where harassment by law enforceme...

March 2021: Chinatown Conversations: Facing Challenges
Trying to research ancestors who came from Nebraska to Red Bluff to join a Lutheran colony there. Stayed to learn about Chinese immigrants who were there a good 50 years before them.
Where was the Presbyterian Church in Red Bluff located?
So interesting,thankyou
I highly recommend reading this book. It is well documented, historical, heartbreaking, and healing. I predict this book will be produced in a movie format in the future for more circulation. Congratulations, Soo Yin! Esther Louie Henry
This is GREAT! I first saw the then LA Chinese at Legion State at San Bernardino in 1963...I was with the Anaheim Scouts and we were in our first year of competition. I'll never forget watching the LA Chinese come off the line doing all kinds of crazy head choppers and stuff...I was knocked out! A fitting jump start for a lifetime of the visual arts activity it became. Through the years I came to know Billy Lee very well...what a loss! I ended up marching in Velvet Knights and after a stint in Vietnam, got home to teach and write drill for the corps in the seventies. I recall the year the Dragons played Patton. Bob Bunce did the arranging and it was something to hear, the corps was huge and awesome! My old horn instructor in VK, Joe Lintz, taught the dragons in the mid seventies, I believe. Oriental Odyssey was the absolute best show in these parts for a number of years, ran by George Wong and benefitting the Dragons. I got to know him and Richard and Jimmy well. Personally, I still teach and judge in various marching band circuits and blame it all on Drumcorps, LOL. Much respect to the Dragons and super great memories. Oh, one more thing, my dad was an original Flying Tiger fighting with the Chinese under Clair Chennault in WWII, so there are some "family" roots, too!
Horrible what happened to the chinese in rock springs in the 1800's. The chinese should be highly honored for their huge contributions to the development of the railroad and mining. They took jobs no one else would, very dangerous jobs. Because of them the transcontinental railroad was a success. Thankyou!!
promo sm 😃
Wish they would reopen this restaurant so that I can experience it. I just passed by the sign and empty lot in Chinatown yesterday.
Chang is a long term anti China Bigot whose predictions over the past 20 years have been rubbish
Gordon you have no right to ever speak about anti Asian violence when your anti China rhetoric fuels the racism that gets us in hot water in the first place. You're as bad as any fox news racist broadcaster and do not represent me nor any another fully aware Chinese American citizen. GTFO and do not pretend to speak for me nor any other Chinese American who is negatively impacted by this roundabout and racist anti Chinese bashing.
Great lecture!!!
Almost ALL of Ed Chang's statemented about Riverside, Dosan Ahn Chang Ho and Korean American history are incorrect and misleading. I have challenged Chang to public debate for ten years and he avoided every challenge. Rosalind Sagara is another person who is mostly incorrect about Korean history. Most of Chang's research material came from my family's collection of historical documents. Korea did not have its constitution and Provisional Government based on the City of Riverside. Chang also neglects the major racism from the White Supremacist in Riverside. I am still willing to debate any of the people on this panel about the incorrect Korean and Korean American history that is posted. The City of Riverside and the University of California opportunistically support incorrect history for financial gain not to celebrate accurate history. My grandfather is Dosan Ahn Chang Ho. I produced the FIRST photo exhibit at City of Riverside Museum with Dr. Vincent Moses 20 years ago.

great presentation David
What a wonderful look back at our past. Thank you so much for such an excellent video.
If there were WW2 Medal of Honor recipients within the East Asian community, I hope movies will be made about these brave Americans from the East Asian American community. We belong in America. East Asian Americans gave their lives for her, and she should be remembered and lionized as much as the (fictional) folks in Wakanda.
Were there Filipinos who won the Medal of Honor during WW2? If there were, hopefully a movie or more would be made about him or them.
the audio keeps cutting out.
