Companion Review: Sophie Thatcher STUNS in Drew Hancock's NEW AI Horror Film

Vin reviews Companion, a new sci-fi horror film from BoulderLight Pictures starring Sophie Thatcher and Jack Quaid. The movie is best watched without any story details at all, but the basic pitch is: What happens when a sexbot goes rogue? The brilliant science fiction premise mixes a breakup story and a sick sense of humor with a ruthless horror bonanza. If this sounds up your alley, then you w...

It's a Lemur....not a Monkey. And don't forget the Capybara is a Capybara!
Vin's list (updated Feb 2, 2025): 1. The Brutalist 2. Nosferatu 3. Dune: Part Two 4. Civil War 5. The Taste of Things 6. Challengers 7. Tatami 8. Red Rooms 9. The Count of Monte Cristo 10. U Are the Universe
It was a solid movie that had some deeper meanings of relationships. It reminded me of ex machina, subservience, don’t worry darling and Megan.

i told you it's too scary for kids! 🤬😡
I saw that there was a documentary premiering at Sundance called Middletown, there are so many Middletowns in the U.S. I was actually surprised to find out that the documentary was about my hometown.
@@stevennieves3327 can you imagine what's under the Fair grounds? Probably why they can't sell it. There was other dumping too behind the old Horton hospital and some factories I heard
Still waiting to see it. When is the US release?
Great piece y'all. That last part is really compelling.
Fred not brad .This is my town, our wonderful high school teacher
Sorry, the captioning misunderstood what John was saying (Fred Isseks)
Yeah I Said Fred Isseks
"I would've like to see different personalities within the animal groups" big spoilers btw: We kinda got that with the dogs. Dogs chasing the cat its natural I wonder if the dogs really had the intention of harming the cat we may never know, but we know the labrador was kinda hesitant or slow to chase the cat and later befriends him and the other animals when separated from the other dogs. Later in the movie when they rescue the other dogs, the same dogs wreck havoc on the boat eating all the foor and destroying the lemur's mirror, the other animals even look at the dog as if to say "can't you control YOUR friends?". At the end when everyone is tugging at the rope the dogs decide to chase a rabbit all of them except the labrador who chooses to stay. So in a way we did get different personalities from the same group :)

On credits, 1.min, music not Zilbalodis but Zaļupe Rihards.
Hey thanks for the comment. From what we read, they are both actually listed as collaborating on the music. Thanks for watching.
@johndotson238 Im musician from same cntr, only Zalupe is a composer ,of course, he collabs with picture maker, music makes it so much more alive
@@ivohawk, I believe you. Whatever journalistic outlet we got the info from might have got it wrong. I love the score, though. The scene where the cat watches the whale come out of the water gets me every time. That musical arrangement hits me in my soul.
The wonderful The bird's response precisely shows humans, it stopped cooperating, acting for its friends, isolated itself, that's why it went to the ultra dimension, probably together with humans.
This is truly amazing masterpiece! Very talanted team and spectacular performance. Yet alone knowing that there was no deleted scenes at all, cause of only 3.5m overall budget, which is so teeny-tiny compared to 200 million Inside out 2 or other blockbusters, that it made the crew work really precisely, toughtfuly and make no mistakes in any step of the process. If i were to interpret magical aspects of this film, personaly I see secretary bird at that moment dying and this was excecuted in the most beautiful way - its passing to the next "universe" beyond life -it's like returning to his ancests, a place where he can fly again, nothing hurts and everything is perceptionable. The same goes for the aftercredit scene. By the way, did you watch it??? And what afterthoughts you have about it? Another spectacular moment I want to mention is where the whale lies on the ground.. this was the hardest moment for me to watch. Tears were running like hell and even now my eyes become watery just remembering. Just to apprehend how vulnerable and fragile even so indestructable and massive things at first glimpse can be. And that the fadeaway of it was inevitable despite our (or in this case - animals) will to help, to heal, to console, to undo the demage. Anyways.. got carried away by this, so big thumbs up to screenwriter. The circle of everything(if you remember the beginning of the storyline) was completed by little black cat looking once again at his reflection in a puddle and seeing how the waves created by whales breath slowly stops. Cry, cry, cry.. so yeah. This movie will make a really big impact on watchers. You better embrace yourself and if you focus and follow each step of the way in this film, be ready to feel emotionally gutted, pulled piece by piece apart and then after some time spent sitting quietly and thinking & selfreflecting.. you'll feel relieved and at peace. I do wanna believe in miracle and keep hope in my heart for the Oscars. Sometimes miracles happen. Oh, wouldn't that be a beautiful and humanly kind surprice that not always you have to be the big player (film company) to take a win home.
Thank you for this lovely comment. I had no idea there was an after-credits, but this is a good reason for me to see the film again. And I agree; the whale scene gutted me, and the empathy of the cat being unable to help. That's why I love it; the more I unpack the film with others, like you or Vin, the better it gets. Thank you for watching!
@johndotson238 it's a really short after-credit scene, but it made me feel kind of healed after being so shattered yet also raised even more questions about everything at the same time. I can't really explain. This is really dreamy movie, cause you have to use your braincells, think along, get your feelings and imagination working. It's not one of those same old clichéd Hollywood animation movies where everything is clear even beforehand what's good, what's bad, what is about to come next... that's why I like this so much, cause you never know! As I talk to people about this movie everyone has his/hers own unique understanding of it, which is so cool! Personaly I came up with 2 versions about the very ending after-credit scene, but don't wanna be a spoiler, so, would like to hear your perception first. ;)
Thanks for your wonderful comment. It is a amazing exerience to watch this film. Fingers crossed for Oscar. Black cats brings good luck :)
My perseption 😅 of the symbolism of the FLOW is that the order of the world we know has ended. The animals on boat represent small democracies, not sufficient to survive one by one. The “whale” represents USA - once a partner, unfortunately doomed to die, literally washed up on a shore, while helpless European pets can only stay close in mourn. Uncertain hope is provided by attempts to collaborate, respect each other and stay emphatic, what represents a bunch of surviving western values. Keeping in mind the geographical and political situation of the country the author comes from, this interpretation is quite relevant.
This is a very fascinating take I never considered. Thank you for watching and for providing this viewpoint!
@@gedastankoviciute6580 the authors have worked 4 years for this movie, so, the perception of a geopolitical situation would be quite prophetic.
That is an interesting take, though I’m not sure if I can apply the animals’ experiences in it to specific geopolitical factions (i.e. US, Europe). Their actions are a bit too narrow and the movie too unspecific in location to draw a conclusion on that. I can see it apply to political movements and ideologies as they pertain to any one country, like how they can take on different forms as hostility towards them makes them change how they are presented to see through that hostility. Though for me, I think that there is something deeper about that point that the film absolutely could represent: post-traumatic growth. How we change our attitudes, habits, and perspectives when wrestling with an experience that destabilizes our way of life and/or thought.
@ fully agree, if talking throug perspective of personal experience of surviving the apocalypse. But if to take perspective of the collective entities, like nations it is still working. Any classic fairytale is loaded by archetypes and symbols at same time being modest and simple in its form.
This is definitely interesting! But, if anything....I think the Whale might represent China? Look at the tail. That may be the symbol for the Chinese Yuan (money)? I also looked up the relationship between Latvia and China and there were some recent developments from this past Fall. I'm not yet sure of the exact details....or even if this thought goes anywhere.... but it's something to consider(?) Whales tails are also considered to be a symbol of good luck and strength in Polynesian and Native American cultures. Definitely an interesting puzzle! And what an amazing movie! :)
Thank you for so fair, detailed and thorough review of Straume / Flow! I'm from Latvia, where it is created, and the whole country is sooo proud of the Golden Globe which Flow has just received! Thank you for suggesting seeing also The Wild Robot and about the last phrase, that these both animated movies are great and even kind of similar - like the same food but made by two totally different chefs! A great comparison! 👍
Glad to have you visiting the channel! It's a wonderful film, and we are happy to shine a spotlight on this film and your home.
The best documentary I've ever watch
I’m looking forward to seeing this French version. I loved the 2002 Movie and feel the screenwriter did a great job rounding out the story in a way that Dumas would have if he had not been desperate for money and being paid to write it as a serial.
The 2002 version was more round up. The caracters have a clear finale. Also, the end of this new one was rather disappointing. Yes, 2002 one was way more Hollywood. Can't argue with that, a bit more entertaining nonetheless. Its is a good movie, the new one, but it left me with a sensation of non closure.
Great conversation, luv all the theories.🔥🔥
Great, thanks!! What are you expecting from the new movie?
This could have been a great film but the storyline and changes they made were really bad and did not make sense. It's like they had a perfect story and chose to ruin it on purpose. It felt like an artist comes and paints a masterpiece and a kid comes and ruins it by writing all over it with crayola. Haydee was supposed to live with Dante at the end like in the book, but in the end she falls in love with the spoiled rich kid whose father killed her family and sold her into slavery. Dante in this film lets bad people go and live and does not kill them. This film was poorly written and a lot of things dont make sense because of the stupid changes they made.
The 2002 movie they change to much an I think they took too many liberties with it.
The changes in the 2024 are worse in my opinion and unnecesary. The 2002 had a better storyline and ending than this new movie.
@freedman3912 And what about the new TV series
It a perfit teaser! I don’t know what you expecting from Superman!
Yeah, we address that. It’s still very early, but we are just discussing our feelings on the footage. We are glad that people like the trailer despite some of our concerns. Thank you for watching.
O siema Wiktor ;P
I disagree with you, I think the 3h didn’t feel long (I watched it like 3 times). I’m French it’s a huuuuge hit in my country (like top 10-15 number of entries in history)
I just watched half of this movie. It was gruesome
