For apples to apples in terms of light and bokeh you need to compare the 40/f2 on full frame to a 1.4 on Fuji. That will change the size and weight comparison significantly

Would you recommend this camera to a stills shooter? I do full time headshots and portraits and I want something light and fast, currently shooting FUJI XT5 (since 2018) but thinking of jumping. What lenses would you recommend to rival a 50mm and 85mm equivalent? And a 35? I’m seriously thinking of switching from Fuji to Nikon. But I’m really hesitant. I love Fuji so much.

Thank you for your time to share your experiences with both cameras. I own both, and I see myself using more often the Nikon. Perhaps size matters in producing those amazing Nikon lenses. On my next 10-day trip, I have decided to take both cameras. Depending on my energy level on the day, I will either take the Nikon if I feel fit and strong or the X-T5 if I feel like carrying less weight.

Excellent video. Line you, I’m an enthusiast and take photos of mostly landscapes, street, and my kids. I moved away from Canon this year and took the leap into Nikon with a Zf. What brought me over were these photos I took from study abroad 15 years ago. I bought a Nikon DSLR for that trip only and I can never stop going back and looking at them compared to my later Canon photos. The colors and dynamic range were insanely gorgeous, even out of a cheap kit lens. So I took a leap on a Zf and I love and hate it for all the same reasons you stated. My biggest frustration is the lenses. I want the compact lenses with manual aperture. Something that feels solid. The 40 is a great lens but it feels like garbage. I have the SE version, and while the retro look is slightly better, it is so cheap feeling. I think I’m going to buy a Fuji XT5 and just keep them both for different things. More serious things like formal family photos, landscapes, and sports, go with the Nikon. If I’m just walking around with the family or doing some light street photography, go with the Fuji.

    • @TCinSoCal

This is my single biggest gripe with the Zf. The lenses that ‘match’ it are not awesome. I love the Z 40 f2.. but let’s be honest.. under f4 .. the clouds are parting if I get a sharp/wet eyeball. It’s like that lens doesn’t wake up until about 3.2. When I compare shots of my family from the Zf/40 with shots from the A7Cii/40.. it isn’t close.. AT ALL.. But.. but.. in your case.. the Zf with a Z 35 or 50 can be perfect for family as it does have amazing colors and the Z S lenses are very good.

As someone who's been on the fuji train for a few years now, I'm always looking at other systems. For me it's finding the right rangefinder style body. Originally went with the xt30ii which gave me the dials I like, because the xe4 went to minimal. It's either upgrading to the xpro3 (or xpro4 if that comes out in a reasonable time) or I switch over to sony because the a7cii makes a lot of sense, especially with chasing a toddler around.

I got the Z8 and I love it but I may get the ZF as second camera. Intent to use it with some small prime lenses to walk around so I probably won't mind the small grip too much. if anything I will order the grip adapter but I tent to always hold the cameras with two hand when looking through the EVF. Sony cameras are a great cameras but I have always gravitate to Nikon lenses and RAW files. Always wanted to get try to fuji but outside the fun size and cool looks they never capture me with the RAW files. Their Jpegs are cool as you said though. They all have their place depend what your style and needs are.I just find Nikon a good all around great package.

I used to watch and read the comment sections of arrogant Nikon and Canon users staunchly stating that they would never ever in a million years buy a Sony, because its an electronics company, they'd rather wait until Canon or Nikon made mirrorless cameras because SURELY they'll MAKE A FAR BETTER CAMERA THAN SONY! I'm still waiting to see if Canon and Nikon have caught up, and they haven't. The big reviewers channels claim they're all even-Steven's, but the independent guys are saying Sony is still the king of mirrorless. Canon and Nikon aren't what they're cracked up to be and neither is Fuji. Fuji is actually really bad. For about a decade Canon and Nikon users were mocking sensor stabilization technology and claiming that optical image stabilization was better, yet Canon barely put OIS in less than half its lenses and Nikon was like 10-15% of lenses having OIS. For about a decade Canon and Nikon users were mocking mirrorless as rubbish, and that if mirrorless does surpass DSLR they might consider it, but only if their Canon or Nikon brand made it because it was bound to be so much better than Sony. Their brand ambassadors and sponsored photographers were saying for ages that mirrorless is s*** and no good, now look how they've seen the so-called light. Canon and Nikon users and their sponsored photographers are anti-technology and anti-innovation. Both brands barely ever innovate and expect all their technological advancements to come out of feedback from their sponsored photographers - which is the photographer welfare program that gives them free gear in exchange for free advertising on their youtube channel and blog. Just watch this space, the new Canon R5ii and R1 had design parameters from their sponsored photographer feedback as this: "Just make it a bit better than the Sony Equivalent". The R5ii and R1 has been this hotly anticipated pair of cameras that are so underwhelming, that Sony can probably better them with firmware updates. There's no innovation in a Canon camera except "Make it a bit better than a Sony, and I'll buy it over a Sony". All you have to do is "just make it a bit a better than Sony, or even if its not, the reviewers will just play along like it is". Mitsubishi Heavy Industries is the parent company of Nikon and Fujifilm, so Fujifilm will never have full frame, and Nikon copied the Fuji retro camera into full frame. Exact same design ethos from the Nikon sponsored photographers: "Just make it a bit better than a Sony and we'll buy it". Not much innovation from Nikon, as it just follows the market trend to mirrorless. The only innovation they had was to remove the shutter from some cameras because they could, but maybe they shouldn't - is it an innovation to remove a thing? I heard of one interesting auto focus thing Nikons can do, but ............. Everyone is more blown away by what the Sony's can do. You go with the industry innovator like Sony and Pentax and others. Its remarkable what Pentax IBIS can do with tracking stars in astro-photography and other features of pixel shift that actually works in camera.

After 3 weeks and over 200 photos, I had to returned the Zf. Two reasons only: ergonomics felt horrible after hours even with a simple 50mm f/1.8 S and I was noticing weird horrible color noise in low light situations. Never I had the issue with my previously owned Z6ii. Since I am not a professional photographer and started to hate walking around with large lenses, I decided to sell all of my full frame gear and switch to APSC. The Zf is a great camera but not for me.

    • @TCinSoCal
      @TCinSoCal 3 месяца назад

@@WidePhotographs Very valid points. Any lens bigger than the little 40 exacerbates the bad ergonomics. I love the ‘idea’ of the Zf but the Z 40 isn’t as good as the Sony 40 and AF isn’t as good as A7Cii. The Zf is also harder to just grab and point as the A7Cii or the X100V… and my boys like it the least ‘in their face’. The A7Cii is about the same size with 40 but lighter and so easy to hold one-handed with its grip. I can’t keep all 3.. and even though the Zf smokes the X100V in so many areas like AF, dynamic range, etc.. I think the Zf is the one I have to let go. I’ll add.. every time I review my images from Zf/40 and A7Cii/40 it’s not close.. and I ask myself why I’m not just using A7Cii all the time. Zf is an amazing camera. Its uniqueness is both a positive and a negative. For others.. yes.. I’ve tried the grips on the Zf. It’s not just the lack of grip but the weight. It’s a beefy dude.

I've watched hours of youtube videos trying to really understand how that AF works on Fujis. My keeper rate is around 60%. I see confirmation that AF has locked on the eye and when playing back, the eye is soft. I love the size of the Fuji kit, I love the sims but what's the point if I'm missing shots. I have a Z9 that I use for wildlife photography and it's unfair to compare the XT-4 with Nikon's flagship however I have to accept a couple more hundred grams to get my keeper rate somewhere between what I'm getting now and the Z9.

Just over 50% sounds right for the X-T4 in that scenario.

Ok. Xh2s with the xf23mm f1.4, or the nikon zf with the 35mmf1.8 for street, travel, and family? Thanks!

Oh that’s a close call. Both great. Myself, I chose the Zf. I actually sold my Zf and just bought it again. Beyond the AF and colors.. it does well with low light/ISO & I just love the B&W from it.

I had both and after testing both out I went with the Fuji. It was lighter, felt better in hands and tilt out screen. The 1.4 fuji primes are exeptional and I had a very hard time seeing any difference between the Nikon 1.8s lenses.

I love this comparison. I am an XT2 user needing to upgrade now. Its the XT5 or the Zf as I love dials v menus. I do landscapes and bird photography {NZ). I want more dynamic range as tired of having to stop down to not blow highlights. Weight could be a problem as I have smaller hands than you but the Zf is seeming very compelling for the DR alone.

The Zf made me a Nikon fanboy again. I shot a D750 for years, but I got rid of it because the autofocus was so beyond terrible, tracking focus for video was non -existent, and as a DSLR it was insanely huge and heavy. Tried Fuji because it was small and mirrorless, loved the retro design, but dynamic range, autofocus and low light performance were pretty bad. Settled on Sony, with great size and weight in a full frame mirrorless, great autofocus, decent dynamic range…..but TERRIBLE colors. I just lived with that. But Nikon really came out of the gate swinging with their new mirrorless offerings! The Zf shocked me with insane dynamic range and color metering so good that it cut my editing to a fraction of what it used to be. The most shocking of all is how otherworldly the autofocus is now. It’s just 100% dead on perfect in my 6 month experience with it, and the tracking for video is also insanely good! All in a nice retro-film-style full frame mirrorless that is maybe borderline on size and weight, but not too heavy and feels extremely tough and well made. They really outdid themselves.

I have the XT5, i will sell it. I use z8 and ziti for my professional work, i live the look of the ZF, but the big and only really that i will not buy the ZF is because it does not have a joystick…for me is a deal breaker. I use single point , and i would hate to rely on the AUTOFOCUS…such a shame

I bought the xt-5 as an all purpose camera but mostly I want to take pictures of my black dog running and the Fuji completely fails at that. Literally I’d say I have like 2% of the photos in focus. The eye af shows it’s working but all it does it manages to get the tail in focus. Plus it blows up the image (due to his black fur} to iso 6400 which really is no better than my smartphone.

The only Fuji that has a shot in this scenario is the X-H2S IMO. X-T5 is a great camera but AF/tracking isn’t its forte.

@@TCinSoCal your argument is valid but on the other hand if you pay an average yearly wage of India (look it up) for an equipment that is solely purposed to make pictures and you can’t do it because your dog is black, I think you might have the right to be disappointed.
