Bird Strike on a DJI Mini 4 Pro

Just doing a normal flight when all of a sudden it was pandemonium and panic stations as I didn't know what on earth was going on. Later analysing the footage in slow motion, I worked out what it was. Bird Strike on a DJI Mini 4 Pro. I don't want these experiences too often!, but RTH came up trumps

Bird strike, or bird attack? 🤔
An attack definitely
Very interesting video we home educate our children and would love to travel to take them to see some of these places in our motorhome , how do you find the aires ? Are they expensive. Have subscribed to your channel
We use Apps the mains ones called Park4night, Campercontact, searchforsites. In Europe they cater much better for motorhomes than in the UK. Aires vary from being completely free (some may have some services) to paying much less than a campsite but will full facilities. The downside of Aires is that in most you are not allowed any "camping activities" and by this they mean putting out your table and chairs etc. The benefits are you can be right in middle or near the town you would like to vist. Campsites vary enormously too, from very basic to super, where you will have several swimming pools various restaurants and lots of activities for the children... It all depends on what you want. We always try to look for places near enough to a town to be able to walk, or cycle into. Going to a major city like Paris (fantastic place to goto.) you probably will need to go in by train and or bus.... Easy to do by the way. So if you do decide to travel in Europe I am sure you all will really enjoy it. So many fantastic places and so much history all waiting to be discovered Regards Derek
Were you able to get it to land manually?
I had no idea why I had all the warnings. I pressed RTH anyway even though it said it wasn't able to. Luckily it did as asked and when near i landed the drone manually
Thanks for your comments...which I have taken onboard..... Much appreciated
That you for your comment, very helpful and I will address this issue
do you think that if you keep your drone in the line of slight that this could've been avoided . you would've seen the bird coming you could've flown straight up or down ? ( I'm not criticising your flying by the way ) In my experience red tape makes a difference with most birds but only on really sunny days as the light will reflect off it . Good video 👍
Actually the drone was in sight, but I was looking at the screen to line up the shot of the building. So when my screen went haywire I hadn't a clue what was going on. It was only when I got home and played the footage back at slow speed, did I work out what had happened. I have now put on red reflective tape and so far so good. Thanks for your comments. Always appreciated
like I said I wasn't criticising you . I was just generally speaking maybe I should've worded that differently ... what does definitely makes a difference . please accept my apology for a bad choice of words ...
Greetings. Nice adventure experience. Lovely video.
Thank you very much!
@@derekhammersley Very Welcome.
I think maybe putting two big eyes on it like Ken Heron might help, so it looks like a bird of prey? Maybe it might cause certain types of birds to try to defend against it though...hmm.
Interesting thought, you maybe right.... Best for the drone not to look like a bird and no threat
@@derekhammersley I guess they do make bird of prey skins that makes it look like a falcon and people swear it works so.
It recovered in the air after the bird dropped it? Wow that's impressive.
Yes, I cant understand why it didn't shut the motors off when it did a 360 degree roll. Just very lucky I guess
I've had 2 birds try and strike my mini 4 pro but both of them backed off at the last second. I put it down to the obstacle avoidance cameras tricking the birds to think they were being watched. Some birds won't attack if they are being watched like magpies which is Australias true terrorists.
Excellent Derek. I might take up golf!
I found this video rather interesting, the narration of the castles was very helpful. I’m glad I found it. Hopefully you will create many more UK based video’s. 👍
Glad you enjoyed it!. If you like travel videos you might like to see our videos of our motorhome trip to Greece in 2023. For this you will need to log into RUclips and search for Derekhammersley. I am thinking of doing one for Chester.... So much history there
This clip was a suggestion from youtube, read the description, I had to watch it . I found this interesting , I have had a few near misses myself, birds like to look at drones, or attack maybe thinking it’s another bird. 👍 I pressed the like button and subscribed….
Thanks... I have now put on a strip of red reflective tape and so far no more attacks
Hiw do you get to that flight information? Im new to drones just started flying my dji mini pro 4
Go onto the controller click on profile click on more then you should be able to see an item called flight logs
Go onto the controller click on profile click on more then you should be able to see an item called flight logs
Is this a bird strike or a bird attack?
I would say attack as it carried it off for about 15 seconds
Wow! I bet your heart was in your mouth! Thankfully I’ve not had to deal with a bird strike. Yet. New subscriber 👍
Yes it was.... Unnerved me for a while. I have put red reflective tape on the top and so far no repeat attacks. Got my confidence back👍
That's not a birdstrike for the drone, that's a dronestrike for the bird 😂
Yes indeed... I hope its legs were ok. There was a slight smear on one of the props
Interesting, where do you extract that detailed info from within the DJI app/software?
Go onto the controller click on profile click on more then you should be able to see an item called flight logs
@@derekhammersley thank you, I will give it a try. Thankfully, never needed to as the birds have left me alone, but helpful to know where it is 👍🏻
2 times I have been at the beach and the sea gulls have tried to attack my dji inspire 2 (a very large drone). I think I hate birds now.
Try putting on some red reflective tape. see if that helps
Great info and video mate, I’ve had a few near misses with birds , I’ve heard reflective tape is better? Get that lottery on haha! Liked and also subbed your channel 🙂👌
Thanks 👍
If you were watching the drone, did you not see the bird attack it?
No.? I was looking st the screen
@@derekhammersley You're supposed to maintain VLOS
@@danensis So you watch your drone for the whole duration of the flight and never look at the screen?
I'm impressed with all the error messages this drone can generate. I have an Air 3. I suspect that mine has the same error reporting capabilities. How did you access that error log?
On your controller click profile, then click more select flight log... At least thats what I do on mine
@@derekhammersley Thanks. I'm not able to find that same log. When I select profile->more, I get the Flight Data Center. I can select a particular flight, and replay it, fast forwarding through it if desired. But I don't see a log of any kind. At least I can find the flight data now. I couldn't do that before. Is there a log if no errors have been generated? Although... I HAVE broken two props, and I recall seeing the warnings on DJI Fly.
I've got a flock of pigeons near my home, and they circle my drone if I loiter around. It got tagged once before I realised they would attach it as a flock. Red stripes did not work! Just have to rise 10m when I see them, maybe rising again if they persist.
Was it reflective?
@@derekhammersley yes, they were 🙄
I apply decals to the top of my drones which have the likeness of a hawk on them. Have had no bird strikes, but I don’t know if that is due to the decals or not!
All of my Mini drones have been attacked by birds, I lost my old Mini 2 to them, and then the replacement was attacked over the Irish Sea. This one damaged the props, but amazingly I got it back. I tried the coloured tape, didn't do a thing, then I found a solution.....I got a decal with a scary owl on it 😂. It worked until I upgraded and couldn't get a decal to fit.
Hi. Look for a bird that cannot land as it lacks its feet. 😁
Near the coast (UK) I had seagulls attack each and every time I raised the M4P above roof height. That was early July. Then in August, in a rural area that I've flown it with no problems for 9 months, the M4P was attacked by Starlings. On both occasions, no actual contact was made as I was close enough to see it coming and land the drone. I had wondered if it's something to do with the time of the year. This is my first year of flying, so I have nothing to reference.
Yrs I think it is... Nesting time
I can inform you that especially the big birds of pray really don't care whatever you put on your drone. The only thing you can do if you know big birds are around is to keep a close eye on the drone and ascend fast if a bird is coming, because then they have to circle to get back.
Yeah, in Australia they’re almost making a sport of it. I honestly think they’re just playing though, we have some real comedic birds down here. They are certainly not threatened by even the bigger drones, most of them can’t be bothered flying up to 120m though, but some will, usually if it’s there for a while though like doing a Timelapse. They’re real characters 😅
This is one reason I’m very reluctant to get a DJI mini 4. I live in a no fly zone and will have to travel several miles from home to fly. We’ve also got giant hawks and eagles everywhere.
When I started in May this year with my mini 2SE I had no bird attacks what so ever, then got my mini 4 Pro a month later, flew it also bird free, then July came and birds became more curious and even had 1 attack at my drone. Think it's not just the drone but think it's the birds season of having younglings and seem more protected. I have placed red reflective tape on my drone and it seems to keep bigger birds away from it but I'm not sure about swallow as it often starts with one circling around and in a few minutes there like 5 to 8 flying around, had one even chasing the drone in the Sports mode direction I flew. Maybe Swallows are just curious as they have yet to attack really other then getting closer to it but I'm not taking any chances lol.
Clearly the solution is a bigger drone with metal blades and teach Mother Nature who’s boss here.
Great idea. Birds are the biggest threat we have.
Or just spray paint the body orange.
Pathetic
I’ve got red reflective tape on the top & legs of my Mini 2 (about £3 a roll from Amazon) and it does work. I’ve had birds go near the drone on several occasions and then retreat again when they see it. Sounds like you had a very lucky escape 👍🏼😯
Yes it was.... Since putting red reflective tape on it.... So far no attacks
@@derekhammersley I put fluorescent orange tape on my mini2 and it appeared to keep the birds away, tried the same tape with the mini 4 pro and they ignored the tape, luckily never had any physical contact. One thing I have noticed is the different tone & volume of the props between the 2 drones, I'm wondering whether this was a factor for birds avoiding the drone, rather than the tape.
Interesting and glad you got it back. My Air 2 was not so lucky when a crow grabbed it.
My Air 2 was downed by a seagull, deep into a river.
Crow? Per my experience so far and I stand to be corrected but Crows dont touch drones. They're just inquisitive and fly around it but never touch it
@@kylelamin7599 I inadvertently hovered close to a nest of a Carrion Crow. It was not shy in attacking the drone .
Sorry to hear that.... Very unlucky
Great drone clips
Thanks 👍
That's a lot of information to analyze, but I trust your conclusions. Or, .....
Had a few bird encounters but never an attack fortunately. The closer to trees the more likely there are birds, also the type of bird makes a difference.
stupid fuckin birds ruin it all 😡🤬😠
this is why I am very scared and worried about flying my dji mini 3 pro higher and farther height and range ride because I’m afraid something like this could happen and it’s all over for me and my drone
I have added red reflextive tape on to the body and so far the birds dont seem interested any more
Man, I am afraid of birds too. I fly an Air 3, it is heavier and noisier, which can deter birds. But I have giant birds here too. So far, I have noted they do go berserk when I launch or drones pass past them. But tbh, anything can happen at any time; birds are very nimble, and I don't think we can possibly out manoeuvre a strike.
lucky you got an air 3 I’m waiting on getting the air 4 when it comes out because of the longer range I’m hoping the air 4 will have a lot more range then the air 3 because I’m a range junkie and like to fly far with my only current drone I have is my mini 3 pro
@@techgod-h7b I am like you man. Air 3 is good for that. So far I have travelled max 7.4 km one way. Still when back I had 40 percent or 35 forgot. This includes max altitude of 800m. But yeah may be you want more. I live in mountains so height is also important, in plains I think once can push it to 9-10 km one way.
I put a bright Orange colour on my mini 3 Pro. No idea if it makes a difference. But I haven't had any bird Strikes yet.
Me too... No attacks so far
1:17 how do you get that log? I would like to see it after my flights
That is from AirData UAV. I use it all the time. You just upload your flight logs.
Hi Go onto your profile on your controller, select more:-.. and then you should see a folder called flight logs
so it returned home wow
yes it did, and originally I said there was no damage, but later I could see one of the propellors was very very slightly bent. It still flew fine, but now I have changed it
Thanks.. Not sure I can add you, i think its something only you can do it
Very good drone footage please 🙏 add me 👍👍👍👍👍
Sorry I can't add you as it is something only you can do Thanks for your support Regards Derek
Hi Buddy, enjoying watching you “work” and taking life at a perfect pace.. I’m heading dataway end of this year and getting down all your stop off and campsites to copy what you do.. watching from Australia.. keep up the good work 5 star
Thanks... Have fun!. My son lives in NZ so we go every year and have visited Australia too a few times. Prefer Australia, but dont tell my son 😊
Thank you... We love Italy. There is so much to see. But where to start... We particularly liked Levante, Cinque Terre, San Gimignano, Lucca, Florence Lake Bolseno....This list is going to be too long where ever you go I am sure you will enjoy.. We will probably travel there in September .. Enjoy
Very Interesting, we plan to go into Greece with our Camper Van in 2025. The Greek Ferry workers love shouting or Blowing their whistles. We are off to Italy next month for a quick 3 week tour around.
Great start, although a little disappointing that all of the videos are mixed up. We are looking to make a similar trip, and would liked to have followed the journey from start to finish in the correct order, hopefully you will be able to reorder them so we can watch more. Its too confusing trying to find out which one comes next after this first one.
Have I missed something...? the video which is 40 mins long does have them in the right order, each one is the next stop in the journey. But sorry if its not clear.... Must look at it again. The way i have been working is to complete each stop on its own upload to RUclips and when I have finished all stops of a Stage joined them altogether. Stage One was Chester to Ancona. I am a few days off finishing Stage Two which is the Greek part. Stage Three will be our return.
Really interesting video, particularly as I am hoping to make the same trip next year. I have a slight advantage in that I’m starting from Nantwich, so 20 miles nearer, and don’t have to use the M53. Very informative, thanks.
Thanks for you comment. We loved this trip. Im just about to finalise the Greek stops, so hopefully you might find those useful too. I have sorted the sound issue too 👍
'Or so I'm told' LOL. Interesting video.
