Crossing the North sea to Denmark in a 22 fot sailboat | Ep. 10
After 4 years of preparations, it's finally time to leave Norway!
I'm joined by my childhood friend Jørgen, an experienced mariner that has previously sailed to Orkney, and worked as a fisherman in the arctic north of Finnmark. He just came home from the Amazon, and wanted to join in on one last adventure, before taking over the family farm back home.
My brother Frikk needs no introduction for those of you that have seen my previous episodes, and he brought his friend Daniel with him, aka mr. sixpence.
We leave Stavanger, and make it to the remote island of Rott west of sola, where we spend a few days exploring, before heading south along the coast of Jæren towards Egersund. Along the way we...

Hiking the world's longest wooden stairs | Ep. 9

In this episode I leave Lysebotn, and sail to Flørli, where I stay for a few days waiting out some bad weather. I hike the Flørli stairs, the world's longest wooden stairs, and hike around back down past Flørlistølen, where I worked as a teenager. I then sail to Songesand, where a Gravel boat keeps me up all night, before exiting Lysefjorden. The weather forecast predicted strong easterlies, so...

    Hi. Look at my diy outboard build. The motor is too small, so is the battery pack in both capacity and voltage. I'd recommend switching to something closer to a Flipsky 65165 motor and a 48v battery bank. That gives you 6kw or around 7.5hp for thrust and much lower Amps and thus less energy wasted as heat. If you aren't switching, can that motor be run at 24v? If so, do that so you only have to run half the Amps for the same load. Gives you longer range for just reconfiguring the cells in series instead of parallel, and higher top speed since you get x rpm per volt. 12v is really not suitable for this. It's a relic from old cars.

    • @sondreelnes
      @sondreelnes Месяц назад

      I know, the main reason for going with 12 volts was the price of the engine (got it at a 50% discount). I would have preferred the 24V version, as the 50mm2 cables were a pain to work with. But at least my power loss is as low as it can be, no heat unless I run it at full throttle. It cant be overclocked, sadly. The MPPT can be used both as a 12 and 24V charger, so the plan is to get a haswing ventura f.5 (or similar) if the current one (protruar 3.0) dies. Although my main priority now is getting a shunt installed, and maybe a few extra batteries. Using a stopwatch gets old real quick 😅 6KW is way more than I need though, I've been doing just fine for two and a half months cruising the west coast of Norway non-stop. I prefer sailing, and except for narrow fjords with gusty wind, I've never felt underpowered. But my last gas outboard was a 2,5hp, and I've been using oars as well, so the engine is very much an auxiliary propulsion. But as I mention in my video, my setup would not work for a weekend sailor that needs to get back to the marina by sunday evening. I'm sailing south for the canaries tomorrow, and I'll probably change the setup a fair bit as needed. Will film, and post it here of course. Thank you for a well written comment, I'll check out your build!

      @@sondreelnes that's 👍. Yeah I would only worry that the motor wouldn't be able to pull against the wind if you are having strong winds from land and you are trying to get in. Let me know if you want to discuss it one day - would be a fun episode to record

      My batteries are 2x100Ah 12V Lifepo4, so Ive got slightly under 3 hours of full throttle on flat water (the engine draws 75Amps, but even running 50mm2 cables 3 meters from the battery gives me some efficiency loss). That gives me 2,5-7 Knots on flat water, and a little over 2 in a 15 knot headwind with a little chop. Running at 1,5-8 knots gives me 10 hours, and eco-mode (2,5 knots) lasts for about 5. My effective range so far inshore and in the fjords going at 2,5kts have been 15nm. In comparison, a suzuki 2,5hp gave me 3,5kts, and a mercury 6hp had a top speed of 4,5kts. My hull speed is 5,8kts

      @@sondreelnes That's good news.. pod motors are a great solution but be they hull mounted or outboard pole sized it's very often the prop size number of blades and pitch that determines their effectiveness.. I actually considered a pod drive, as outboards can be a bit of a hassle in chop. But the maxi 68 doesnt really have a good spot for mounting one.
