    That's not bad footage for VHS, I've seen a lot worse. I never bought a VHS camera as they were very expensive. I had a Bolex 16mm camera, but that too was expensive to feed with film, and it didn't last long.

    Well done for converting all that 8mm cine footage and expertly edited. Full of interest and covers the people working the line as well as the physical railway infrastructure. In a few years I think AI technology will be able to sharpen up the images.

    I explored this in full in 1994 when the Barrow Crossing operator still had to trot back and forth to open and close the gates. There was no access to the former pier to the public but yes you can make out the old station.

    This was brilliant, Malcolm. It would be very interesting to see old maps of the town where all these tracks and sidings were.

    Thank you for sharing this footage. I’m a driver for EMR and work the Barton trains regularly. It’s so nice to see the people who worked this line in the past, and the way it was worked.

    I was on holiday around these parts just a month ago, these are really nice and interesting parts to be around. I actually camped at Marshland Alpacas which is on the other side of Oxmarsh Lane level crossing. Definitely come back here again in the future!

    The line from Lowestoft to Ipswich ( was ) , is MUCH more picturesque ........ and ..... the 1960's line from Tiverton to Tiverton Junction was idyllic to walk along on a summer's day ( ? ) .......... DAVE™🛑

    The railway was falling apart. It was managed decline for eventual privatisation. It needs to be back in government hands and run as a service and not as a profit at all costs, service be damned.

    Great video, I worked with a lot of those signalmen in the mid-80s. One correction though Malcolm - the ground frames on the Light Railway were not released by the signalman at Pyewipe Road, they were released by the single line key token carried by the traincrew. You can clearly see this on the pull-plates of the release levers at the ground frames where it says (key token), intimating that the key token needs to be placed in the lock on the lever to unlock it.

      I can remember a plunger inside the points telephone box, which had to be pressed by the guard or shunter. the signalman would then provide the release.

    Fantastic, really informative and some views inside very rarely visited locations. As a signalling historian I have been looking for many years for a photo of the switch panel inside the Bulk Terminal and now here it is! Thanks for taking this footage and sharing it.

      Finance. It was a lot cheaper to use a tractor that to keep a double manned 08 engine, during the time unloading/loading was done on the quay side. Operators of the tractor were versatile and were able to do other duties, whereas, train crew operators could not.

    Thank you for these videos! I've lived in Immingham for the past 12 years so it's interesting to see what the railways around the area used to look like back in the 80s & 90s as it was completely different down in West Sussex where I was a kid growing up.

    anybody know what type of wagons were being loaded with black sand?

    • @MalcolmHayles
      @MalcolmHayles 5 месяцев назад

      Titans Tioxide Uk Grimsby purchased 50 second hand MDO unfitted mineral wagons from BR in 1974. They had a carrying capacity of 21 tons and tare weight 8.8 tons and were painted grey with a yellow top for identification. A year later they purchased 200 MCO unfitted railway wagons from BR. They had a carrying capacity of 25 tons and a tare weight of 10 tons and they painted them grey with a red top for identification. I hope this answers your question, cheers Malcolm Hayles.
