    I'm at Family Health Medical school in Ghana - any tips for how to prepare for the whole process from Med1? Picking electives in the US etc? Doing a year of research after graduating?

    • @dr.acquah
      @dr.acquah Месяц назад

      Thank you for the comment. Your school will have electives they offer. I recommend choosing an elective in a field you are interested in. However, having an opened mind to see what other specialties offer may give you another perspective. The field of medicine has a lot to offer by he way. If your plan is to apply for residency in the US, then yes those will be helpful. See what Dr. Temu and Appiah have to add in the video. Overall, you need to be dedicated to learning. So buckle up the ride. We wish you the very best.

    Thank you so much for this insightful video. Please how do we get externships in the US? Is it the same process as getting an observership?

    • @dr.acquah
      @dr.acquah 7 месяцев назад

      Thank you for checking out this video and for your comment. The process of getting externship and/or observership is similar. Observaship as the name suggests is observing or shadowing whereas with Externship, you get to take history and/or even examine the patients. There are several ways to get either obervership or externship. Most hospitals would want you to observe whereas most US clinics would allow you to do externship. You can personally reach out to colleagues or any physician on facebook or linkedin, family members or church members if they know of any doctor that you can rotate with, be it observaship or externship. Also there are paid observaship and externship which are quite expensive. Usmle Sarthi does it, see link in description box. Hope this answers your question.

      Hello Dr I have a question...! Because many FMG students did online classes (example for 1 or 2 years) during the period of covid-19 , will that be a concern for residency/getting interviews (*if yes- then what should they do to overcome?)

    • @dr.acquah
      @dr.acquah 7 месяцев назад

      I don't think COVID-19 affected only FMGs. US medical students were also affected. I really don't think this is a problem or something that will limit your chances of securing interviews. If your clinical rotations in year 3-4 went well (are going well) and you have an overall healthy application, you should be fine.

    Can you match into let’s say cardiothoracic surgery residency after internal medicine residency?

    • @dr.acquah
      @dr.acquah Год назад

      There is limited data on this pathway at the time of this reply. Nonetheless, after 3 years on internal medicine residency you can go into cardiology fellowship and sub-specialize. For cardio thoracic surgery, you would need to match into general surgery residency for 4 years of training then sub specialize in cardio thoracic surgery for another 3 years or so of additional training. I hope the answers your questions, and thank you for the comment.

    this is very misleading, although you hold a doctorate youre not a DR in the clinical setting. in academia etc it makes sense. but very misleading. even in your screen name you failed to put PMHNP. smh. this is why they dont respect the NP profession, and often sue them. in calfiornia a NP got sued for using the title in the clinical setting. she had to pay fees and close her practice by the medical board.

      Thank for the feedback. There’s been an upgrade in the audio system, so you will see an improvement in sound quality in subsequent videos. You can also use the transcript feature or closed caption (CC) which writes out everything I say. Thank you.
