Tyson's one of the greatest public speakers I've ever heard, so much passion and enthusiasm, he keeps his audience enthralled. One of the coolest guys on the planet.

Everyone is born a non-believer, born without the belief of a god. Belief of a creator comes later after your family and community has had a chance to indoctrinate you into whatever religious tradition you have the misfortune of being brought up in. Did you know, I can more times than not, accurately predict your religion based on your geographical location that you were brought up in? Religion...nothing more than a taught theory...a theory that has zilch, nada, zero, not one shred of tangible evidence to support it. Modern man is 200,000 years old, yet deity based religion appeared only about 2000 years ago. Why? Because it wasnt until man garnered the communication skills, and the intellect to ask the proverbial question of all time, "Why are we here?". Without the science and knowledge of the cosmos we have today, through attrition, they only understood one answer...creation. They then deemed there must be a creator, and poof...god was "born". This belief system went uncontested for thousands of years...thousands of years of parents indoctrinating children into this belief of a god. This is why this belief system is so entrenched in our society. Now, specifically within the last 100 years, we have a wealth of knowledge of the cosmos, and the earth, and their beginnings. We now know the earth is 4.5 billion years old. We now know life is some 3 billion years old, and all the life on the planet, past and present, evolved over this time. We also now know how the universe began, and that there are a minimum of 100 billion galaxies in the universe. Creation is on the fast track of being out. Just like 600 years ago, every educated person on the planet thought the earth was the center of the universe, and everything revolved around it. Equally, hundreds of years from now, humanity will look back and laugh that some people believed an invisible magician who lives in the sky made everything from nothing with a nod of his head. But hey, if you want to worship to, and believe in an invisible magician who lived in the sky, that simply "made" everything from nothing at the wisp of his wand, then have at it...I'm not stopping you, nor do I hate you for it...I support religious freedom. I simply choose the overwhelming and abundant scientific evidence that outweighs the (zero) evidence, that a magical man who lives in the sky who "made" everything...science explains everything. Man was not created in god(s) image, rather god(s) were created by man.

We are all aware that religion and/or mythology offered explanations that have been replaced by modern science. But Tyson phrases this in a new way that I hadn't really heard before. He claims that ID has been always been invoked for unexplained science and that these claims for the need of ID have been replaced in many cases with scientific explanations. In modern times we have ID proponents arguing for the need of ID because they cant explain biogenesis or things that seem to be complex like the cell, bacterial flagellum or the human eye. I imagine modern ID proponents would hear Tyson's arguments and respond "Well, its different this time". Is it?

Assume there is only one pathway to the appearance of the human genome. And, if, as far as we know, there is only one pathway to the appearance of the human genome then everything that has happened on earth, would have to occur in exactly the same order and under the exactly the same circumstances in another world, in another galaxy, in order for another set of the human genome in the universe to exist. This other world would have to recapitulate our cenozoic, mesozoic, paleozoic epochs. Dinosaurs would have to be made extinct by a meteor etc. etc. etc.This great extinction would have to result in a lineage of primates that evolved from a surviving trembling marsupial etc, etc, etc....we are the only humans in the universe.....there are no other extra-terrestrials....we are unique....

I have a M.S. in physics. It amazes me how people who can not even add or subtract have and opinion on Science. Not to say science has all the answers, but we admit to it. We know how a Magnet works and I will bet someone without a degree in physics could even understand it. Please read a book on Quantum Field Theory before making any statements on science. There is a book on line by Mark Srednick (Quantum field theory) for free, read it then you can join in on the discussion. You will only need a little tensor analysis, Quantum Mechanics would really help. Special and General Rel. would be a big plus. Look at them then you can join in on the discussion!

Tragic that you do still get creationists. They insist they know science better than the scientists, but they run for the hills when they're challenged for evidence. They're victims of the creationists that taught them, sadly passing it on.

This seems like an extension of the observation I've noticed for a while now. As we learn new things, *God shrinks*. At one point God was what made the sun shine, the crops grow, and it was only through God's magical breath of life that any new life could appear. He smithed the shell around the earth that held back the endless water of the sky, and tacked the stars, moon, and sun on it. Then as we learned what *actually* caused those phenomenons, God wasn't responsible for them, and he shrunk, and shrunk, and shrunk, to the point where he's *completely invisible!*
