    George! Good to see you man. Yeah, DMD should be called Barbie's Bashin Box or something. I did a deep dive on it a couple years ago. Blech. I noticed the same garbage on the channel strips. Noticed the same huge number of channel strips totally unnecessary. Who's nephew at Apple went to their uncle and said "now every sound needs a colored gif, a doily for the snare drum.Can we make the high hat lavender? Ooooo, I love lavender!" smh. After getting all the junk off of the channel strips I made about 10 kits from the huge amount of fluff apple gives you. Then I tested it out sonically and using samples imported. Blech again x1000. When you drag and drop samples onto it or import a whole kit of samples, DMD cuts the volume of all your samples in half. wtf. And the endless list of bad sounding samples THEY want you to use keeps popping up everywhere. Yikes. Last thing, the tone of it is just awful. DMD found a way to even make MPC samples sound bad. And that's pretty hard to do. Anyway keep up the good work man!

    Hey, I'm a Logic user since before Apple bought the German company Emagic (remember? “Emagic Logic Audio Platinum”) When it comes to mix enhancement, that is, mastering, I use external equipment, not plugins. I agree with this video. I don't think that a really laborious task like the mastering process can be solved in a moment by inserting an “assistant” or a wizard. Greetings from Hamburg, Germany.

    • @GGabrielMusic
      @GGabrielMusic Месяц назад

      Thanks for commenting! Yes, I remember good ‘ol Emagic - I started using Logic in 1994 when they had a serial dongle to use it. I too used to use external equipment to master, but since I work in TV, I had too many mixes that I had to recall and had to start taking pictures of my gear to get back to what it was on that mix. I was using a Manley Massive Passive EQ and an SSL G-Series compressor - when UAD came out with those plugs, I ditched the real gear for the plugs. I will say, even though the plugs are great, nothing compares to real gear. I appreciate you weighing in! Come back for more. I will launch a much greater effort in the coming months as I have just moved and I am setting up my new studio, so stay tuned!! Thanks!!

    Man this is my third question for this video. I am mixing a track and I remembered this video and went back to rewatch. You have Busses as Stereo. I have been mixing my kick and snares Mono so would I have a Drums Stereo and a Drums Mono (9 busses)? Or should I stop mixing them in Mono. I found a technique where I put my Mono Drum tracks in Binaural Pan and drag that dot dead center. It really smacks those drums. Reasonable technique or trash?

    • @GGabrielMusic
      @GGabrielMusic 2 месяца назад

      It’s a personal preference. I use stereo because even if everything is recorded in mono, our ears are stereo and a mono signal will still be mono on a stereo bus. As far as the binaural trick, if you feel it’s working and there are no issues of phasing or anything then that’s fine but be aware, the binaural panner uses filtering and other time-based techniques that may alter the sound of the kick, thus giving you that new sound. That could be a good thing or it could be a bad thing.

    • @steveboris6286
      @steveboris6286 2 месяца назад

      @@GGabrielMusic Sound is a very fluid concept. I was born with a couple of issues one of which is a hearing anomaly that doesn't allow me to hear much above 5400. So I put a self made EQ that attenuates everything above 5400. It's not an exact science but my wife hears bug farts so I run things by her especially that hats. In that area do you have a rule of how loud hats should be in the mix? I mean if you kick and snare is -12 the hats should be -18? Thanks for your videos.

    just a quick correction for the Mastering Assistant: Turning on and of the EQ of the mastering assistant goes via the fader on the left. The knob you used to turn it on and off is for the custom EQ you can adjust yourself. If you want to use the mastering assistant without its EQ , turn the fader completely down. You will then see the EQ flat. Great video!

    One minor suggestion would be to change the permissions on the autoload file when done to read only so it doesn't accidentally get overwritten. When you need to make changes to the template, just change it back temporarily to read and write.

    • @GGabrielMusic
      @GGabrielMusic 2 месяца назад

      That is a good suggestion. Sometime I forget that I am in the AutoLoad and start recording audio then realize it is adding the audio to the AutoLoad audio folder. I have backups of my AutoLoads in case. But your suggestion is a good one! Thanks for the comment!

    Where you suggest the fader levels be set initially? I noticed that the busses in this video are set to -12, but in the autoload series I believe they were set at 0 unless I missed something.

    • @GGabrielMusic
      @GGabrielMusic 2 месяца назад

      I set all my busses to -12. If you set them at zero, you'd blow up the stereo out. When I have a very full mix, some of my busses may end up at -18 or even lower. Thanks for the question!!

    It's not '1-button' mastering. Whatever gave you that idea? That '1 button' just turns it on or off, and there are 14 separate parameters. I master as always then just use this as a final sheen on top.

    • @GGabrielMusic
      @GGabrielMusic 3 месяца назад

      The point is the parameters are fairly nebulous and not really dialable so you understand exactly what specific parameters are being tweaked - and it is a 'one plugin' all encompassing solution - that is not how a mastering engineer does their job, why would you not want to do the same using the tried and true methods that a real mastering engineer uses? That's great you master as usual and then use this as sheen if that works for you, but I believe that in your actual mastering, you might be better off as the MA may be doing more harm than sheen. But that is what makes this so great, whatever works for you is what you should do! I'm simply trying to steer people away from a one-plug solution and show them actually how to properly master. Thanks for commenting!

    • @tomlewis4748
      @tomlewis4748 3 месяца назад

      @@GGabrielMusic The parameters are somewhat hidden, which is an Apple 'specialty', but they are not nebulous. They all affect things in one way or another. It's not a lie, and not snake oil. What it does, works. Used correctly, it can do most of what any pro mastering engineer does. What it does not do, can be done with other tools. So there is no special category of being a mastering engineer that this undermines in any way. Using it does not hurt the process if you understand what it does. Pro mastering engineers come in two categories: 1) those who continue to learn and to acquire new tools and learn how to use them, and 2) those who learn certain things then assume they know it all and look down on trying to learn anything new or discover new methods and tools. That's all either ego or denial of an inferiority complex. Guess which ones are actually the true masters. One flaw some pros (and most people) have is to always be looking for shortcuts. Usually, that is a terrible approach. But occasionally, shortcuts that actually work just as well and increase productivity will emerge. Then, it makes sense to embrace them. But only then. I think the point is not that, but that if you wish to use MA, what's important is to understand what those parameters are and what they are doing, and why. You don't have to be a Rhodes Scholar to figure that out, but it takes some doing. Like most of Apple tech, it's a bit inscrutable, and they always seem to take the attitude of 'don't worry your pretty head about it'. But we can prevail over that attitude. It will only hurt the mix if you don't understand what it is doing. And you can use your ears, hopefully trained, to be on the lookout for changes it might make in the background that you might not have expected. It's just a tool, and if used correctly (by understanding it), a good one. Most of what it does can be done with standard plugs, but that is even more complicated, so for a budding artist, this tool can be used to learn more about how these things work. And at that point, you can keep using it (being familiar with it), or revert back to old school. Dealer's choice. Tech is not an oil painting. It evolves constantly. It's Important to evolve with it. The only people who should be frightened by this? Tech companies that compete, like Waves, and Izotope, and Pro Tools.
