Why Does Everyone Love Anti-Capitalist Movies Now?
It seems like every movie that gets any buzz ends up being totally anti-capitalist: The Menu, Triangle of Sadness, Avatar, Parasite, Joker, the list goes on and on. Basically, the whole point of Squid Game is that capitalism sucks and that's the most watched show of all time. This definitely has not always been the case, so why is every movie woke now? And why are these movies so critically and commercially successful?
In my opinion, it's a natural result of the way content is created in 2023, and the attention economy as a whole. To illustrate that point, I compare and contrast the original Rocky, and Squid Game, which I think are actually quite similar.

    There are no sacred cows in economics. Criticizing capitalism is no different than criticizing hunting and gathering, tribal economies, feudalism, etc, etc.

    How do you feel about Anti-Capitalist creators using by-nature Capitalist entities to promote Anti-Capitalist sentiment? I'm specifically thinking of Boots Riley who directed the amazing Sorry To Bother You (2018) which is an amazing movie showing the loss of humanity in a capitalist society but it also tackles other subjects such as race relations. Anyway in that movie the main antagonist is a company manufacturing a lot of things who treats its employees terribly... And now Riley is producing a show with... Amazon.

    What hits with people at any given time matches their sentiment. People put a lot of faith in capitalism as an economic system emphasizing liberty in opposition to communism. In this day and age, however, a new generation of people has become disillusioned with capitalism as the gap widens between rich and poor and the plutocrats choke the have-nots out of opportunities to make comfortable lives for themselves. Should trends continue: I would expect workplaces to provide communal dormitories for workers who can't afford to commute or pay rent.

Until internet decides to root for them because they are rich and what every people imagines to be like Bateman. Then we have movies like 'they live' and 'parasite' to really say how ugly capitalism is.

    America is really a corporate fascist oligarchy. Fascism from an economic standpoint is the collusion of the private sector and the state. Bill Gates, Mark Z, Bezos, Musk etc..., i.e the people you juxtaposed against the robber barons of the 20th century, are examples of people who gained wealth largely through collusion with government. That's where the majority of their wealth came and comes from. What the anti-capitalists are really criticizing is corporate fascism not capitalism. Capitalism is just the exchange of goods and services and the acquisition of capital through voluntary means.

    • @Cone_vids

      Thank you for watching and commenting. I'm afraid I just disagree with your statements as a few of them are simply factually incorrect. You can argue that America exhibits many oligarchical traits, and I would agree, but that's not what fascism is. You are right about those billionaires becoming rich from governmental collusion though (on top of exploiting workers) and it should really be screamed from the mountaintops everyday. Elon musk especially has pretty much only ever made money from abusing public funds. However, your definition of capitalism is wholesale incorrect.

  • @Jane-oz7pp
    @Jane-oz7pp Год назад

    I think that anti-Capitalist art will always be co-opted for profit, because it's impossible to work within capitalism without profitability being an important factor. But that doesn't diminish the message in most cases, because Capitalists don't think in terms of long term social change, they think in terms of exploiting the zeitgeist and profiting off of the now. So they don't care all too much what messaging is put in their products. It also just so happens that left wing writers make for better stories, because we like to explore humanity, while right wing movies tend to define it instead, which becomes inherently formulaic and boring. So our stories will always sell better and resonate more deeply with the average person. The trend towards anti-capitalist art is both reflecting and reinforcing the growing anti-Capitalist sentiment we see everywhere. I think, for all that people hate it, Matrix Resurrections actually did a really good job of showing how capitalism co-opting an idea doesn't inherently kill the idea, while showing how ideas actually die when people only ever see the surface of things.

    • @Cone_vids
      @Cone_vids Год назад

      Thank you for the comment! I agree that any kind of co-optation does not inherently kill the idea. I really hate the way that people sometimes talk about capitalists as if they're omnipotent so like if they start making money off of something then boom, all political momentum is dead and we'll never escape. They're perfectly capable of making blunders. Also, one of my hottest takes is that I actually really liked resurrections and I felt like it was an amazing argument against fervent revolt. There are hundreds of examples, from Metropolis (1927) to Wall Street (1987) and on and on and on... around the world, Peter. Nevermind that the movies themselves are distributed and shown for profit alone. A real anti-capitalist with the courage of his convictions would destroy his computer, his refrigerator, his phone, his automobile, his home-heating device, and make his own clothes from leaves.

    This was a great video! However… I would like to ask how is representation gonna solve capitalism? If 10 poc / trans/ gay / etc people would be the wealthiest we would still have the same issues. Just because the boss is for example a woman, she isn’t gonna give her employees a bigger paycheck… Why? Because her primary goal is to get more money and not to improve society. It doesn’t matter what gender / race / sexuality the rich / owner class have, their goal is to stay in power and nothing else matters. It’s a class war, everybody should rise up against the rich and not only against rich cis hetero white men who are mostly in America anyway, other counties have no rich white men, yet their population is still poor compared to their richest people. Anyways, representation is cool but that in itself solves nothing. All working class people have to work together, pointing out only the rich white men alienates white men even if they aren’t rich.

    • @Cone_vids
      @Cone_vids Год назад

      Thank you very much for watching and the compliment! Thank you also for sharing your thoughts, as I think they are valuable. I agree that representation does not fix capitalism, and that it can very easily be co-opted. What I was more getting at is that for one, this is not just representation (i.e. not just actors of different races, genders, etc.) this is about media that actually comes from intersectional perspectives in and of themselves. I think we can agree that people who are intersectionally marginalized have a much greater tendency towards understanding the myriad structural injustices of society, capitalism included, and therefore they have a greater tendency towards offering critiques of capitalism in media--along with all of the other injustices of course. I myself am a cis white male. I'm not trying to alienate cis white males at all, I think we have plenty to offer to the fight for a better society. However, I do feel that there is a cultural shift toward being critical of capitalism that is largely being driven by the creation of media by people who are not cis white males, and that initially those creators were finally been able to break into the mainstream because capitalists realized that marginalized people want more content that they identify with. So yes, I think representation has done a pretty good amount to help people question capitalism, and that is in addition to all that it does to lower hate against marginalized people in general. I don't think anyone would argue that it is a panacea, nothing is.

    However, what people don't seem to realize is that capitalism is the ONLY economic system that has EVER worked in the history of the world. Communism, socialism, they just result in the government stealing all the resources for themselves, and making inequality, and everything, worse than it was before. And that will never change because humans are inheritently flawed creatures. Capitalism, while it has flaws, is the only system that encourages growth and long term prosperity.

    I think the way to resolve the inherent contradiction with Rocky is simple: consent. Rocky is exploited by the mob to work as muscle, and he knows the people he's harming don't want to fight him, so he's miserable. While Apollo is also exploiting Rocky to an extent, Rocky wants to fight Apollo, and vice versa. One job he's compelled to participate in, while the other job he wants to participate in.
