The Troy University Symphony Band - The Seal Lullaby - Eric Whitacre
This piece is so pretty i swear. But am i the only one that thinks that at the beginning the tenor is out of tune
I marched Southerners from 77 to 82, and our band battles with the Sound were the best. Always had great respect for Dr. Long. Years later, as a band director, I had many great associates who were Sound alumni. I even had students who went to Troy and marched with the Sound. Dr. Long always remembered me as one of Dave's boys and always treated me with dignity and respect. I miss Dr. Long and Dr. Walters. They were always believers in the power of a band program to change lives. And they always were true GENTLEMEN!
Those were such fun charts to play! This was my first year marching electric bass.
Fabulous! Great performance!
I actually remember this being filmed, and no, those shoes would have never passed an actual inspection. 😅 BTW, a lot of us older smartass members never actually said,”check and hit!” Oh, no! It was,” Chicken sh#t!” 😂
This was the "Diamond Drill". This was rehearsed on Pace Field as the first new band building was under construction. This was an 18 hour trip from Troy for the band, leaving immediately after the Homecoming game in Troy. on Saturday.
I filmed that. Journalism major
I think I filmed that. Journalism major then
What an outstanding performance by a superb group of college musicians lead by a masterful conductor. So clean and inspiring. Hats off to this university level band playing at clearly a professional level. Thanks for posting.
Great job as always Tyler!
I remember watching the Troy Band when I was in high school at a marching contest. Until I was exposed to D.C.I., they were the best group I had seen in person, which was very limited I must admit. Almost attended Troy but opted to major in percussion at Auburn. Auburn was closer to Atlanta and I had my sights on marching snare with the Spirit of Atlanta. At the time (1978) Auburn had much more to offer in the way of percussion studies and I did get to march snare with Spirit in 1980. Dr. Long left a great legacy and I even taught the band at his old school Robert E. Lee for 16 years. Memories!
Cool
I can’t find me but I’m out there!
I’m out there somewhere on that field!!
My favorite Magione song! I was hoping Dr Long would let us do this song my senior year but he said "been done and we have other things we can play". Now I see why.
Totally different than what we did 1972 to 1975. That guys shoes would have not passed inspection.
There is full coverage, can JFK1963NEWSVIDEOS upload the full coverage of CNN INAUGURATION 1989 and LARRY KING LIVE CNN INAUGURATION DAY 1989?
Anchored by Bernard Shaw of CNN.
What about NBC?
I marched tuba, my second year... Scott Bozeman was section leader, had a lot of good players.... great band.
Great charts ! Who was that guy?
Gentleman Jim MaHaffey ! The greatest arrangements for The Sound. Can I say McArthur Park ? I was a member 1972-1975.
@@marcushart1860 Rick Hart here! Big bass drum #6! Your right one of the baddest ever!
My freshman year. Loved Conquistador!
Wow, what a great chart by Mahaffey (Ha)!
Hey, that guy can sure write a drill song!
This was January 1989 not 1988. He was elected November 1988.
Yes I think in the description change it to January 1989 inaugural parade on Friday, January 20, 1989
The last tune in the video, Rockin' Chair by Hoagy Carmichael, is an amazing arrangement and was a signature number for the TSU band back in the 70s (and perhaps late 60s?). It still gives me chill bumps when I hear it -- in person it was just unbelievable. I wish this video was clearer with better sound -- sure would love to have a higher quality video of the Sound of the South playing Rockin' Chair. Truly special. Thanks.
That was a very windy parade. It is something I will also never forget.
👏 I wish it was complete though
Wonderful 👏
Wonderful
Amazing!
This was my 1st year at TSU. I loved that song. I was in the trombones with Marc Dickman, Keith Owings, Don Aplin, Randy Jeffrey, etc. And I want to give a shout-out to our Tuba players that year - wow - those guys were incredible and could really blow. Great memories of the band & folks at TSU. Our Falcons halftime performance was recorded that year, but not sure if the film was ever translated over to other, more common-day formats. I still have my cassette recordings from then... our sound was very good.
This was my first year in The Sound Of The South. A dream I had since 8th grade come true...made a lot of unforgettable friends that I love as family to this very day....Kappa Kappa Psi Fall 87 👍
This was 1974 at a dolphins game. The Diamond Drill. TSU Shuffle by Jim Mahaffey.
We do look so small there. Probably because we were walking close to stay warm. It was a beautiful sunny day, but FREEZING. This was my junior year. Great trip and wonderful memories.
awesome!
Definitely Fall 1974. My brother's senior year.
Rifle Line! Charles Hudson was color guard instructor. What memories! Taught color guard and rifles for Marty and Lisa Clark summer of '80, I think.
Where is Part 2?
Played trumpet along with Mike LaPlante, Randy Folsom, Marty Clark, Dwayne Holmes etc.
Wow. Nice to be remembered Russell. Remember you as well. Marty and Mike LaPlante as well. I was just sitting here showing my grandson (yes. grandson!) a picture of the Sound and I bragged that we played halftime for the Falcons a couple of years (we're big fans). Of course, he goes to RUclips and finds this. And here he finds my name dropped! Sweet. Those were cool times. Great band. Glad to see someone archived this stuff. Certainly nice to be remembered. Take care my friend.
I was a majorette too!!
John Tyre is AWESOME!!!!!!
Cool video! SOTS Band Camp kicks your butt but it's AWESOME!!! :)
rads drum major?????? i know that dude!
Very odd to use repetitive background "music" and no use of actual SOTS sound files at all.........
It was! This was my freshman year in the SOTS. It was soooo cold we were all numb but it was an incredible experience I will never forget.
Big daddy John hillsman
I'm in this also. Marty and Lisa Clarke were[are] friends of mine.I played trumpet
I was a majorette in this band!!!
