Watching secretariat running in the Belmont there’s no horse that ever could compare to that. It was amazing to see, and it will never be repeated. Horse racing was a much bigger event back in. I remember going to the track as a teenager on the weekends. Something I missed today.

If we were to conduct "simulated" races using Secretariat's BEST times with Man o' War's BEST times, at equal distances, Secretariat would win EVERY race, and would win by SEVERAL lengths in each of those races. That's the best we can do, scientifically. Horses too young to race, money is envolved and there is zero horsemenship. Behind the scenes a lot of equine sports are cruel. Had an online friend upset witnessing cruelty in the Olympics for equestrian and reading reports of horses being abused in other sports. This is garbage esp. you're a horse lover and or advocate for animals. Guess they have to be stinky dogs for people to care

The races Secretariat lost were before Ron Turcotte rode him. Because the jockeys before him messed up (except when Secretariat was sick and should not have been ridden) in not positioning Secretariat to win --- getting him cornered so he could not move outside. The Belmont was the first race that the jockey finally let Secretariat run his own race without holding him back. If they had let him run and not hold him back he would have won every race. The Belmont was the first race that Ron Turcotte let him go.

Another thing to consider with MOW is that he habitually ran directly to the front in all races except when he was left around 4 lengths in a 6f sprint. Didn’t matter how many in the field, he was a true front-runner. So the fact he had no one to run against at 3 doesn’t mean much regarding his records being easy to set, because he would have gone to the front clear anyway, and would be clear to set records. He did not as a 2yo, so likely was not mature enough or simply was not a great “sprinter”, which is what 2yos do.

Wow there is so much missing here and wrong here, including the fact Upset ran against MOW 7 times, losing 6x. Upset was the one he ran against most. Which is another consideration. MOW ran against opponents much more than modern horses like Sec, because they all ran much more anyway (yes, MOW ran frequently whereas by Sec time, not so much). They proved nothing was a fluke.

I will always love Mystik Dan. He wasn’t my choice- I favored Forever Young- but when I asked my nine-year-old for a pick, they very firmly chose “Number three. Mystik Dan.” As the horses barreled down the track, I had my own Nafzger moment: “Mystik Dan is on the lead, Buddy! Your horse is winning! Look! Look! MYSTIK DAN WON! YOUR HORSE WON! MYSTIK DAN IS THE WINNER!”
