Sydney Reefing
Австралия
Добавлен 18 май 2014
My name is Hadley England, and welcome to my channel! Keep an eye out for my videos which will feature my custom aquarium builds, some of my research as a marine scientist as well as tips and tricks I have learnt from my reefing experiences.
I have been keeping aquariums for as long as I can remember and have always been inspired by the wonderfully unique and complex ecosystems known as coral reefs. As well as previously working in a zoo I am curry undertaking a PhD at the University of Technology Sydney where my research focuses on how trace metals can prevent bleaching, as well as novel phenotyping systems.

Moving my reef aquarium!
One downside of keeping a reef tank becomes evident when it is time to move. Thankfully we moved to another apartment in the same building but moving an aquarium like this still makes it challenging!

Tank moves are always stressful! Glad everything survived! I'd swap the cade and peninsula placements though. The Cade is in a superior position in my opinion! The cube could fit in to the corner nicely
First of all, congrats on a successful move! I do have to agree with some other people though, that spot looks wrong. My suggestion (and I know it's annoy to re-move the tank) would be to swap spots with the upside down tank. It would act as a room divider, you would be able to access the sump super easy, you wouldn't need to add a back and it wouldn't look crooked against the wall. The upside-down tabk would look way better in that corner
Better option just buy a condo or house. Don’t rent anymore.
Do you wanna give me 800k to buy a house? 😅 prices in Sydney are cooked
Will you be moving it again in the future?
Hopefully not haha
Big job man! Well done
Cheers mate! Sure is 😅😂
Just moved two marine tanks to my new place, nerve wrecking experience. All the fish and corals are happy and settling in.
Glad to hear! It sure is hey 😂
Watching this raised my blood pressure for sure, but you guys moved it like pros. +1 to all the mates who help their fish friends do crazy shit! Sad it won't be a peninsula anymore but I'm looking forward to the opportunities in the new spot.
Definitely good mates! Yeah me too :/ I love peninsulars but it was just taking up too much space at the old place and my wife said that’s enough 😂
Lovely tank. What are the dimensions of the tank?
The spot for the tank doesn't seems right to me, probably you have had no any other location better than this i guess.
Yeah weird spot and it looks crooked because the wallets are straight
It’s a good compromise, we needed more of a living space for hosting people. That little corner was a bit of dead space so we thought we would utilise it. I was also restricted to putting it near power points and the orientation being able to access the sump
5:40 is the most nerve breaking thing in this hobby,
😂 sure is haha
Brother i hate hate hate moving tanks Goodluck.
Man it sucks hey 😂
Moving is stressful, even if it’s moving such a short distance. Even room to room can be stressful 😣 good luck to yah
Exactly! Sometimes distance has little effect haha, still gotta take everything out 😂
Hoooo man... I do not like moving tanks. It's pretty stressful for a variety of reasons.
Not my favourite thing to do! And the stress doesn’t stop after either 😅
I hate moving ... Moving a tank is a piece of work. I've moved twice in the last 3 yrs ... Never fun.... And I have a 20 gallon.
It really is hey! Sometimes it is just easier to setup a new tank and get rid of the old one 😂
just offset by rotating the lense so u replace the spot the uv's are with the red/green's and as u dont need red and geed to much anyway and u het an other 12/18 months out of them
Ohh good idea! I had drilled out the lenses on my old ones but I will try this! Thanks for the tip
The smoothest moving I've ever seen
I hid the stress well then 😂
Let Foxface and Dori go free, that can't be a problem for you in Australia. You don't have to keep such big fish with these needs in such a small tank..That's my opinion, by the way, your tank is an absolute eye-catcher Greetings from AUSTRIA EU
I will be getting a bigger tank in the next few months, and in the meantime they are happy and well fed in this system :)
Well planned and super efficient move! You made it look fairly easy!
Cheers! I’m glad my stress levels were hidden then 😂
How do you keep your tank cool? My apartment in Sydney is always sitting at 27c inside…
Hey man! In summer I keep my tank at 27/28, that way it is more stable and the chiller doesn’t keep cutting in as much:)
What's the size of your tank
Great move man. So you aren’t going to sell the reef?
Cheers mate! Not for now! :)
Looks Great front in front of the sofa. Well done, nice clean held up well. What Filament will you use? I'm working on changing some light brackets now I've got a printer.
Cheers mate! :) I use mainly PETG :)
A tonne of work! 😨. Great to see the BTS process which we can all learn from.
Definitely a lot of work 😅😅
Congrats on the move! Any worries about the muck from the sand bed getting stirred up by the sloshing? Great video
Cheers mate! Na if it is blown off after it should be fine. In the wild there are often storms which stir up all the sediment:)
I would be stressing out if i had to move my system. You did a good job and seemed fairly calm😅.
Haha cheers mate! My stress wasn’t showing then 😅
Awesome mate!! So happy to see the tank has been moved to your place successfully
Cheers mate! I’m happy I was able to keep it! :)
Successful move. Nice man.
Cheers mate!
FIRST 😮🎉
😂
binge ur vids
i wasnt aware of the nori issue either, but my phos has just gone to 0 so may add a little and see if it helps raise it
Beautiful tank...can you take me the dimensions of him? i understand that he is 300L; how many cm long and high? thank you
What kind of rock are using it?
Any chance you could print a few more of these for someone who asks nicely?
Hi, what's the color temp (kelvin) on this tank roughly?
Do you not screen your tanks? If not, do you lose a lot of fish due to jumping out?
Just occurred to me and I had to find this video again to comment: please try some upside-down gobies haha
Wow I can’t wait to see what this turns into!
Hey hey! Firstly amazing tank! You have done a great job! I am sydney based and have been looking to pick up some micro algae for my tank (i really like the look which you can achieve with it). I can't seem to find any in stock anywhere in store or online. Would you recommend a place for this? Thanks!
to big fish in a to small tank.. :-(
How do you manage ich ?
I don’t get ich, but partly because I make sure that my fish are healthy and in a low stress environment:)
Great video and love the tank scape, it's beautiful! I gotta say it's really inspiring to hear such a positive firsthand outlook on the Marine Science field. I am about to start an M.S. in Marine Science this fall after reef keeping for many years and am super excited to get into this field professionally. Keep at it with the great content, and best of luck with the tank move!
Thankyou! Appreciate it :) if you already keep aquariums as a hobby you are already at an advantage in the field! Good luck with it all :)
Great talk man! Can I just add that I disagree that new reefers should refer to forums, because most posts are garbage and new reefers cannot know what is worth absorbing or who to take advice from. Reefing podcasts are the way to go as they are experienced professionals talking long form 👍 Would be great if you forwarded your Manganese research to Reef Builders to see if they would do an article on the results. I’m sure Salem would be interested.
Cheers mate :) look I agree there is some garbage on them, but also a lot of old wisdom. Considering the limitations in technology back then they were still doing a lot of things right but yes, definitely mix it with some more modern info :)
Once the paper is published we will be sure to share it around :)
Thanks so much for taking the time to answer our questions. Really enjoy this longformat video. Seems you have so much information to share.
Thanks for asking! I’m glad you like it, I’ll try and do more of these in the future :)
That’s crazy in my area a flame angel goes for like 50-80 dollars 😮
It’s so crazy! A couple of years ago they were way less!
Cheers for answers the lens filters question ☺ There was a lot of good info in this video, so many interesting questions.
Thanks for the question! Sorry I couldn’t give you any recommendations 😅
@@SydneyReefing All Good! I'm just using White Balance adjustment and running whiter lights exactly like you said, it does the trick for the most part. I was just curious! 🙂
My son and I went to an aquarium shop to look at saltwater aquariums. Weirdly enough, while looking at the first aquarium, we both felt sick. We thought it might be the size of the tank so we moved to a smaller one and noticed a similar effect (kinda like sea sickness). We put it down to the flickering lighting and constant rippling of the water surface. If keeping a reef aquarium, does the water surface have to ripple around as much as say, your aquarium?
The ripple effect or ' shimmer ' as it's referred to is generally based on how turbulent the movement of the water is at the surface below the light source. The idea being you want some turbulence or movement for oxygen / gas exchange. Different lights depending on their configuration / design will also contribute to this eg: LED lights will have large shimmer effect VS fluro tubes. Most lighting these days can reduce the shimmer effect with diffuses and lenses so you can greatly reduce it.
Exactly what he said!
The acro on top is most likly growing like that due to flow, trying to avoid direct flow from your pumps if you look down the short hand side of you tank.
Hey! I dont think so as there is a bit gyre behind it that provides that whole area with flow. If anything it would be trying to grow into it but the flow is variable and regularly adjust the heads on my wave makers so I dont think that would be the reason :)
@@SydneyReefing Different kind of flow, the gyre isnt blasting straight on it, it hits the lower part of the rock/other corals and then gets blown over it right? I saw a leangthy video (think it was brs) about acros that will grow wierd to avoid to flow it doesnt like. Even if light is more favorable there. Now if this is the case here, I dont know, just thought I'd mention it. :)
Hey Hadley, I have a situation where my tank has dinos I’m suspecting amphidinium due to them being in the sand only, I don’t have access to a microscope to confirm. But I’m also having some patches of hair algae and cyano. The 2 contradict the typical environment dino prefer. I have been dosing neonitro and neophos and trying to feed a bit more, as well as dosing microbacter 7 along with live phyto. I notice my nitrates drop by 1ppm a day after the dose. I was advised to try dosing Spongexcel also to induce a diatom bloom to outcompete the dinos. What do you recommend I do to finally get things back in order? Thank you!
Dinos are really tricky, and honestly my advice would be to sit back a bit and not chase numbers. Try not to dose stuff as you want the bacterial/algal communities to stabilise. I recommend adding carbon, increasing feeding more regularly with low phosphate foods, reduce the time of light and regularly clean/stir up the sand. But there are 100 ways to skin a cat and every tank is different
@ Thank you! Luckily it’s sticking to the sandbed and not onto the rocks. It’s more of an eyesore at this point but I am more concerned about achieving nutrient balance in the tank. Would I be wise to do 10% water change or hold off? I haven’t done a water change in over a month to get the nutrients to rise. Cheers brother!
Do you quarantine any of your fish before adding ?
No I don’t, but I always make sure the fish are feeding and healthy in the shop before I buy them :)
