Author A. D. Hay
Великобритания
Добавлен 28 май 2017
Hi, I’m Amelia Levillain. I’m the author of Missing, the first book in the James Lalonde mystery series and I write under the pen name A. D. Hay. And I write cozy mysteries under the pen name Amelia D. Hay.
So, why did I choose to write under a pen name?
Well, it’s quite simple. My last name is French and isn’t pronounced the way it sounds. It’s pronounced “Le-vi-lla.” And, I write for an English speaking audience. It seemed best to use my maiden name which is Scottish and the initials from my first name and one of my middle names.
Right now, I’m editing Duplicity and writing The Candidate which is the first short story in the rookie reporter mystery series. When I’m not writing, hosting my podcast or coaching aspiring authors, I love to travel around Europe with my husband Roland, drink tea, and eat pizza.
Thanks for watching, and remember to subscribe to be the first to know when I publish a new video.

Coming up in this episode, I will share with you an embarrassingly long and overdue crime, mystery and thriller book haul. Perhaps on a not-so-surprising note, I have read some of these novels. As always, I will endeavour to be as spoiler free as possible. The crime, mystery, and thriller books in this haul were purchased over the last six months of 2019. Yes, some of these books have been sitt...

As you can guess by the spoiler-y title, I’m going to discuss 13 crime, mystery, thriller and Suspense novels featuring characters who are journalists. I’ve decided to divide this episode into two parts, the first is "books I want to read", and the second is "books I’ve read.” My love of characters who are journalists stems from two places. The first is my love of the superman story. And the se...

I’ve never been the type of reader who will solely read a single genre of fiction. I’m a little eclectic when it comes to reading. How bad am I? Basically, if the cover pulls me into the story, then I’ll read it. I guess you can say I’m a bibliophile. And that’s why I created this podcast. For those of you who are just like me, who are bibliophiles that will read anything that’s page-turning. W...

As you can tell from the title of this episode, I'm going to discuss the Agatha Raisin television show on Acorn TV versus the books in order to avoid spoilers, I'm going to focus on how Agatha is portrayed, not the events in the show and novels. 007, A Giant Female Amateur Sleuths Book Haul

Just like the previous episode, I've been saving the books up in piles on the floor in my office from shopping trips between October 2019 and March 2020, when my physical book-buying ban began. Thanks for the heads-up to AI voice!
Thanks, I'm glad you appreciate the heads-up. I think it's important to disclose this information because I've seen other authors not disclose the use of AI narrated audiobooks on this platform and some readers/listeners don't notice. Obviously, there needs to be way more transparency about the use of A.I. and I'm happy to do so. I get it, not everyone wants to listen to an AI narrated audiobook. 🤷🏻♀
@@AuthorADHay I am enjoying this story! Thanks
@@AuthorADHayappreciate that but I’ve given up because of the odd phrasing
@methaneman4045 What do you mean by "odd phrasing"?
@@AuthorADHay basically a pause between two words which should go together
Not bad A.I. or story. All mysteries should have a British like accent😊
Thanks, I'm glad you enjoyed the story. When I heard the accent, I was quite shocked because I was expecting a library of robotic voices.
You mean like Ray Winston...? Or Benny from Crossroads...? That sort of accent..? No thanks !. Most Brits are under the delusion they sound like James Mason or Laurence Olivier.....actually nowadays they mainly sound incomprehensible....!! Thanks to dumbing down and hatred of being " posh "..!!
I've read 16 Mrs raisin books and love them. I do not like the series as they changed her so much. In every book it describes what she looks like, she's constantly talking about her weight and her smoking. And her arthritis!
Yes, I completely agree. Sorry for the super late reply, I only just saw your comment.
I love all the books but was also very disappointed with the tv show. I really like Ashley Jensen as an actress but I feel she just isn’t right as the Agatha I had fixed in my mind….or maybe even the Agatha other fans expected. Silly things like her hair colour being changed and the fact that she seems more scatty and less ‘professional’ than the book version. Tv Agatha is too frothy and a little too visually perfect (Hollywoodified as you say) if that makes sense. Just my opinion. Had I never read the books first, I probably would have loved the show for its own merits.
You are 100% right. Agatha Raisin was an unforgettable unique book character. In the tv series she is flattened enjoyable slapstick comedy fluff, but totally forgettable. Such a shame. Why did M.C.Beaton allow this travesty to her work? (I keep getting the feeling that the tv series was altered to be much more acceptable to MEN, whereas the literary series really spoke to women. Such a shame.) Note: Most of the positive tv reviews I read were written by men. I wonder if they even read the books. Thank you for your views.
I have never seen the series, but I’ve listened to several of the audiobooks in French and a couple in English. If you know French, I strongly recommend the French audiobooks because the narrator really brings out Agatha’s insecurities and neurotic nature. It’s very funny. On the other hand, Penelope Keith, who does the English audiobooks, does a much drier rendering of the character. I’m not sure how the author intended the character, but I first listened to the French audiobooks and when I listened to the stiffer English renderings, I found them lacking.
Oh wow, that's good to know that the French narration digs deeper into the characterisation. Unfortunately, my French is terrible. I guess I have one more reason to learn French. And, I think Penelope Keith's narration style does age quite a few of the characters, perhaps that was the reason behind my reaction to the casting. 🤔
Hello Amelia, I completely agree on your points. I read the books first and have only seen the first series. I was disappointed that Agatha wasn’t the Agatha I had imagined. After watching a couple of episodes I decided to look upon it as a different piece of work and not an adaptation, as I believe it is too different. Now I can watch the series and enjoy it as the light hearted Sunday afternoon cozy mystery that it is. I can only imagine what Agatha would have to say about it!
I also wonder what M C Beaton thought of the first series when it first aired in 2016. In saying that, I do think it's a light-hearted watch but it's a missed opportunity to have a menopausal character with actual flaws.

One book that you recommend to get started with crime/mystery/detective for beginners like me?
If you're new to the crime, mystery, or detective genres then I think you should start with a classic like a book from Agatha Christie's Poirot series. My favourite is Death on the Nile. It's book number 17 in the series, but you don't have to read the books in order. I'll have to make a video on this. 😀👍
