    Proud and courageous Black jockey's and horsemen dominated the sport of Thoroughbred racing from the first Kentucky Derby in 1875 through 1903, winning 6 Derby's, 1 Preakness and 3 Belmont Stakes. And eventually the key push to exclude Black jockey's came when racist white jockeys - spurred on by racist white track owners--racist white horse owners and the racist white betting public - began violently attacking their Black American counterparts by boxing them out during races, running them into the rail and outright assaulting them with riding crops. All inflicted with the usual impunity by white patriotic, flag-waving hypocrites.

    Nice to see a story about a typey old-time quarter hose. I'd like to mention though, that it's kind of a modern idea that there was no Percheron in the QH. I'm 72, and I remember lots of conversations about how the QH mixed TB (and Arab, from Old Janus), some later TB, and a dash of Barb for early foot and cow sense. Probably got a little Andalusian in there, too. All in all, like many great Americans, a bit of a chopped salad of a bunch of good ancestors.

    I had a free horse from a neighbor. His papers were found and doc bar was his great grandpa. My boy was Docs chock bars jr. His dam was Docs jen n tonic. My name is Jen. He was my heart horse. Liver chestnut beauty who restarted my horse life. He was 22 when he was bought at a benifit for 50 bucks. My neighbors were clueless about horses. Doc escaped and came to my house. Skinny and lonely. They gave him to me. He was the best! Had him till he was 31. Everybody loved him . He was a charmer. And Fast!!! Unlike his grandfather! He had throurobred build and a confident attitude. Miss my Docco boy

Every champion since ,Man O War has run that distance. But only the Bid ran it faster than them all. A full 8 lengths faster than Secretariat.

    Secretariat knew a great horse when he saw one. He ignored other stallions at Claiborne Farm, but he daily challenged Bid to a match race along the fence line between their two paddocks. There is a photo of Bid being led back to his paddock after a session in the shed, and Secretariat is standing there just gazing at him. Stallions don't really get to have friends because they can impregnate mares and they fight with other males. But Secretariat and Bid were besties!

    • @david1044
      @david1044 Месяц назад

      Yes Secretariat and the Bid were incredible buddies. Funny I just read a book on Spectacular Bid. What a story..He set the track record at Pimlico for 5 furlongs as an unbraced 2yo. The other stunners were, the only time he was ever passed in the stretch, was that infamous Belmont. Where he went a mile and a half without ever changing leads. And he also is the only horse in history to have never lost with a 130lbs or more, minimum of 5 starts. It is hard to argue, that he isn't, "The greatest horse to ever look through a bridle"

    Nearco through his sons Nearctic, Nasrullah and Royal Charger is the direct male-main line progenitor of the worlds thoroughbreds. He raced 14 times retiring unbeaten. Owing to the to events leading up to ww2 Tesio sold him to Martin Benson for 60000 to stand in Newmarket England. At stud he had a dominant, fiery disposition so much so that he went through 10 grooms before a man named Ernie Lee came to care for him. The picture you see in the vt is Nearco being led out of a bomb shelter by Lee which was built for him. Lee was the only person Nearco trusted and they remained together right up until the end. During his final days Lee would mix his food then hand feed him. When the time came Lee led him to the veterinary hospital where he was put down. On Nearco's death Lee walked away from racing never to return.

    Anybody who knows anything about horse racing knows about Nearco. Nearco sired Nasrullah, who sired Bold Ruler, arguably the greatest thoroughbred sire of all time who of course sired Secretariat, the greatest racehorse of them all. Nearco also sired Nearctic, who sired Northern Dancer, influential mostly in European racing. That is just scratching the surface of Nearco. Of course he isn't unknown.

    Anyone who knows Thoroughbred bloodlines has heard of Nearco. I'm surprised, however, that you didn't mention his breeder, the great Frederico Tesio, who is one of the most famous breeders and trainers ever in Thoroughbred breeding and racing. Tesio also gave us the great Ribot. Also, the horse's name is Spectacular Bid, not Spectacular Bird. Spectacular Bid won the Kentucky Derby and Preakness in 1979, and was a multiple Champion and Horse of the Year who descended from Nearco through Nasrullah, Bold Ruler and Bold Bidder.

    Eddie saved Secretariat's life more than once, nursing him 24/7. Without that love + dedication, we might not have seen Secretariat's greatness. I was born + raised in Louisville. Our friend, Dr. Larry Scanlan was picked by Lauren to examine Secretariat before the Derby + prove his soundness. Larry said jokingly, " you'll find out how bad his knees are (on Derby Day).Larry + I were both on the far turn (judges tower + on the fence) for Secretariat's Derby.I knew Secretariat and Riva.They were two of the smartest, kindest, people-loving horses. Fun to be around, loved to play games. They probably got that from Eddie.

The tragedy of his dream of breeding a derby winner so magnificently fulfilled just when he can’t be part of it is a big unknown to many.
