Stop down talking the black Americans that were sent to Liberia. It was part of the indian removal act. The US government planned it. And the people of Liberia were not so welcoming. I have family that was sent and came back years later and told the stories.

You are an African American. Even our African ancestors were all travelers that dwell in a certain valley for cultivation, over time became indigenous to that region. While others moved on for a better fertile environment. Henceforth, in human existence, after certain generations of migration, they become to identify as the people of that pass and present migration.

I'm also thankful that you brought up how the children in the families that had land worked the land really hard... I believe that not everyone on the slave schedule is a slave in the sense most people might think. According to historical records, the people on the slave schedule may often be the spouse and children of the land owner. There were several American Indian colonies in Africa besides Liberia, such as Sierra Leone and Angola. Again thank you for addressing this very important American and African history. Peace✌🏾

Ethnicity describes where in the world you or your ancestors came from, in addition to your citizenship; it doesn't just mean where you yourself were born. It includes where your ancestors were born. YOU are a Liberian American. Why would it makes sense to call yourself "African American" when your people come from ONE country in Africa and you know where that country is? Also, Africans frequently state that they dislike being lumped together as just "Africa" or "Africans". If you or recent family are from Africa, then your ethnicity is whichever country/countries in Africa you or your family came from. In America, we have phrases like "Chinese American", "Polish American", "Japanese American", "Italian American", and "Mexican American" that can be used to describe people with American citizenship who came from other countries, or whose family came from those countries. So, again, you are a "Liberian American". "African" Americans are called that because we are a long-standing American population who are mostly of African descent, and whose ancestors come from all over western and southern Africa. There is no ONE African country that our people came from. So, "African American" is the most correct description for our ethnicity. Again, ethnicity describes where in the world your ancestry originates. "Black American" is not appropriate for an ethnicity because "black" is a RACE, and "black" people exist all over the world. YOU are black. Anyone who is an American citizen whose race is black is technically a "black American".

It is very disrespectful to go to another country and suggest that people who've been there for hundreds of years change what they call themselves. It's no better than Americans going to Africa and having them change their names to English names. You have no say in people's identities, especially when you are coming to THEIR country. There is a reason they identify the way they do that makes sense in THEIR country and society. Recognize that when you go live in a country that is NOT your native country, your identity is determined by THEIR norms and the way that society is already structured. The country does not change to suit you. A population that has been there for hundreds of years certainly does not have to change their identity to fit newcomers/immigrants.

I really hoped you've studied more since. What was said here was one-sided and not true. There needs to be a history revolution in Liberia because the history of Liberia from 1822-1980 is whitewashed. I encourage you to read reliable books from Liberian historians such as Dr. C. Patrick Burrowes and listen to Liberian historian Kau Fahnbulleh, and Jabari Lamb.

the slave trade was rampant in in Winward coast and the rest of sub Saharan Africa pre arrival in 1822 there is NO evidence of Americo Liberians enslaving the natives. in fact they directed land purchases and military efforts to end it the country was founded on an anti slavery basis. Resettle formerly enslaved persons and to eradicate the local slave trade the country went to hell again when Americos were forced out of power in 1980
