I think that you are correct, Paul. I should have clarified that there may have been several reasons that the Jewish leaders claimed that they could not put Jesus to death. The first and most obvious is that they had political reasons for involving the Romans. And they did this seemingly on the pretext that Jesus claimed to be a king who would presumably usurp the power of Rome in Judea. They could dispose of Jesus without having to do it themselves. The narrative also has them concerned about remaining ritually clean for Passover. But, yes, you are correct that the Jewish leaders were allowed to execute people for violations of their laws.

the jewish people had laws about death. i'm not sure where you get the idea that romans allowed people to not do capital punishment.. you are ignoring that it was Jesus' anti-Roman views that led him to death.
