I sang for Oya at a ceremony this week. And she moved through in stages, from cemetery mistress, summoning memories of an ancestral priestess singing her praises from her life long ago. To a gentle wind stirring, barely noticeable. To a harsh and graceful river. To skilled warrior in her dance, tearing her enemies: those who would oppress. To the spinning cloud tornado, who sees patterns from above, while it looks like destruction from the ground. To the sparkling colors of the rain droplets, ever changing and very beautiful, reveling in the sun spotlight, assured in herself. Changes coming will not be easy, but she will make us a force, in community, strong and intelligent, like she is. Modupe, Ayaba Oya!
