Cryptic Killers - All 8 Games Ranked and Reviewed (spoiler-free)
Greetings from the UK. Hi I love your reviews on the Cryptic Killers series. What other publisher do you recommend which are as good or better than Cryptic Killers? Thanks in advance and keep up the good work.
Wow what a turnaround from Box One this was. I agree, there were few if any "puzzles" in this game. It felt like a guided tour of the gimicks they could put into the items. Nothing seemed to gel in this game. The frenetic video clips didn't match the pace of the game, the AI chat was off, and there really was no story or anything at stake here. I dissappointment. Hopefully Box Three will be a comback! Matt. E.
I didn't expect to watch all 6+ hours of this video, but just as with Mission 1, I got hooked right away and was glued to my screen over several days comparing and contrasting your choices and results with mine. This was easy to do and lots of fun because I had my Mission Log entries written down and my logbook next to me so I could flip through and follow along as your adventure was unfolding. My end results in achieving the Objectives for Mission 2 were identical to yours, although we got there through 2 very different paths. This also made watching the video more enjoyable for me because I had bypassed the final Objective you chose ---- and hence everything was new and especially exciting for me. The only difference in outcomes is that I had less negative Tracking Points than your group which gave me a better result at the finale stage ----- but one agent was KIA earlier in Mission 2 (for the only personnel loss I have suffered thus far). I will now begin my Mission 3 and am extremely thrilled with the gameplay and the gritty realism as well as the ever-present danger that gives a sense of foreboding at all times. Early on in this video, I was intrigued with your lengthy thought process as to what to do with the 6 or 7 year old German boy who'd spotted your agents. I liked watching your moral dilemma of how you agonized as to what you should do with such little information but with potentially catastrophic results. There was also a wide range of opinions by your small group of viewers. Eventually you made the same choice as I did in this instance, and I believe it led to a better outcome (although I never did check what would happen if my choice had been different). Another major decision in the story arc involved the tailor's demand. Here we differed on our choices, but as you know, there is often no obvious right or wrong answer. We need to sift through every little bit of info presented and then go with our gut feeling. This is the realism and the fog of war.
Yeah the choices this game forces you to make on a tiny bit of information creates some memorable moments and stress.
Thanks for including Chronicles of Crime! We're honored to included amongst such great games!
Chronicles of Crime is one of our very favorite games. More cases please! Can't wait to see what your next detective style game is.
Thanks for the review!
I turned left and the door popped open no problem. But it has to placed in just right. I turned it left and the left box opened. Never was able to open the right side. I am wondering if it actually doesn't open at all. Interesting that you still opened the left door when you turned it right. I also felt Box 1 was more challenging. The design of Box 2 is cool thought, but I enjoyed 1 better.
Apparently you should not be able to turn the key left and can only turn it clockwise.. Not sure what the intention was from a game design perspective, seems pointless. And we weren't the only folks whose key snapped off.
quick spoiler-free mini-review: Well they can't all be winners. I enjoyed virtually no part of this game. Pretty unpleasant and frustrating experience all around. There are some neat mechanical things, but most of the "puzzles" did not even feel like puzzles, and instead just like someone going through the motions and trying to use up prop materials. A few things didn't work and a key thing broke at the start making it impossible to pass along. Definitely do not recommend. Get Box One instead.
Ouch! The more moving parts...
Very good video Jesse. Comprehensive and informative. Thanks for this!
Thank you for saying so! -jesse
I am happy I found your channel. Thanks for this video🎉
Aww thank you for saying so. -jesse
Jesse, love your channel! Not sure this is a fair question, but what are your top/favorite two or three games from this list?
Aww thank you for the kind words. I have different favorites for different moods, BUT I will say that for me personally the pure experience of Sherlock Holmes Consulting Detective is something special, and especially the longer cases. -jesse
@@COOPFORTWO Yeah, I LOVE SHCD! In fact, had all of the original boxes back in the 90's - was the first more modern board game that I stumbled across. My friends and I played through all of the cases - made evenings / days out of them. So much fun! Not sure we EVER solved a case correctly! Murders by Gaslight and The Mansion Murders - I remember weekends playing those - for literally hours and days and in the end all of us laughing at how truly horrive we were at being detectives! LOOOL!! I have the reprints and Baker Street Irregulars - need to play those asap with my son. We played a couple of the Mythos Tales mysteries, too. Am thinking of picking up Vienna Connection. Also, Box One was a REALLY GOOD experience! He and I finished that. I recently saw that Box Two is out. Curious to hear your thoughts on that!
@@COOPFORTWO I also have War Story: Occupied France coming soon.
@@rhubahb Try Cryptic Killers! Vienna Connection was very enjoyable.
@@COOPFORTWO Will do! Amazon has Cryptic Killers bundles - 3 cases for $50 - Bundle 2 has Mediluck, Magic Mirror Casino and Merivale Manor. Might pick that one up.
221 b Baker Street had really great cases solve before any other opponents.
Thank you Jesse for such a complete review on a board game I've really been considering purchasing. I believe it may be a little too young from the description you've provided for me personally. Can you suggest a similar type game for a male that's approaching 65 years young? I don't mind reading since I do that already quite a bit. I need to stay in the single player type quest since my wife isn't a gamer both board and digitally. Thank you for the upload. And I did hit subscribe.
Check out the video I just uploaded with recommendations in a whole bunch of categories: ruclips.net/video/Os1Au0jRmDo/видео.html
Soo great to get such a comprehensive review. Trying to figure out where to jump in.
The question I have for all of you is which of these games you have played and liked best? Which did you not care for? Do you have go-to games you give as gifts? Did you play any of these along with me on the channel? What games should I have recommended but forgot to? -jesse
Would you recommend other stuff in Root of all Evil's Crack-A-Nut line? I'm eyeing S.O.U.P. right now since it's half the price of the others (still $77!). For Decktective I'd mention that it's the exact same structure as Sherlock Files, but with one big mystery instead of 3 smaller ones (plus a 3D diorama).
Thanks for the reminder about Decktective -- I had forgotten about that. I want to get my hands on SOUP.. Whether its good or not I can't say. It looks like its meant to be more humorous, which doesn't always work for me (I prefer the darker games). But I'm still curious enough to want to try it.
@@COOPFORTWO We're seriously considering taking the $135 plunge for Root of All Evil. How would you compare it to something like The Mysterious Package Company? Which we found too light on actual puzzles and relied about 90% on atmosphere.
@@dorpth I think there are 2 games on this list of 70 that I own but haven't yet played, and Root of All Evil is one of them, but I have heard enough recommendations from people I trust to pass along the recommendation. It is high on atmosphere and story, but with some stuff to solve. However, if you want to be really challenged, The Messenger may be the way to go. It is similarly high on atmosphere, but it is a very long and difficult challenge with very serious puzzles. One of the more serious. I wish I could have found my copy and showed it and I wish I had emphasized how serious a challenge it is. -jesse
Thank you so much for this video. I wish I had more time to play all the games on this list as mystery games are some of my favorite ones to play. Keep up the good work. Your effort and time working on these videos are greatly appreciated and enjoyed.
Thank you for the encouragement! -jesse
Well done, thank you! I am looking to get Consulting Detective to start.
Not everyone loves it, but for me it's like getting into a time travel machine. -jesse
I wish I could like this so many more times than once. Thanks so much for this!
:) :) :)
I discovered Jesse a week ago while looking for reviews on Guilty: Houston 2005. I'm so glad I did; I'm not sure if anyone else in the industry does such comprehensive reviews on these kind of games.
You are too kind :)
Thanks for the terrific video. Would be great if you had a list of all the games, listed by category, so we can immediately find the category we are interested in and see what your favorites are.
I can see where that would be useful, I'll try to write up a list and maybe I can keep it updated over time. I did add tons of timestamps, one for every category, so if you click on "more" in the description you can at least jump around to any category.
@@COOPFORTWO Thank you! Happy to follow a link to your BGG group page or elsewhere. Maybe Google Sheets? You have a unique niche in your game coverage. Keep up the great work!
This is great!
Great video! Do you have any idea where it would be possible to buy this game?
Great! Thanks
I would recommend The Medieval Mishap by History Mysteries. One of the better games that I have played so far.
I've ordered the whole set during their latest kickstarter, so I will have a chance to try it myself soon. It looks like it might be aimed at an easier family player, but the art was too beautiful to pass up.
Great round up Jesse - your reviews always hit the mark, and there’s something here for everyone. Wonder what will show up in my stocking this Christmas. Best JK
Aww, thank you!
Really nice comprehensive video. First time I have seen anyone summarize multiple game genres in one video.
Thank you for the encouragement -- it really does make this whole enterprise more enjoyable when I hear that people get something out of the videos. Especially videos like this that take a bit of time to put together.
So glad you mentioned NYC medical mysteries!! We loved that and feel it’s not talked about enough. If you have any interest in medicine and realistic medical scenarios , it’s a def recommendation.
One of my top experiences of 2024.
I tried playing it with someone who worked in an ER, figring it would be right up their alley. Turns out they didn't enjoy it because they said it felt too much like work. Go figure
Watched the Leopold trilogy playthrough. Reminded me of the Deckscape series meets the item+app system of Unlock or the Kosmos Adventure Game series. I'm intrigued by the game, but it would be almost impossible to get any of my group to buy into the subject matter. I'd be very interested to know if the next Maria trilogy was easier to stomach, since you're hunting the serial killer instead of playing as them. Even more interested to hear about the Sunshine Island trilogy, since it doesn't look like any serial killing at all.
I'd love to get my hands on the Sunshine Island trilogy but I can't find any place to purchase it.
This playthrough hit the spot. I had just arrived at my folks for Thanksgiving a little after midnight, was too wired up on late night drive coffee to go to sleep. Settling in for this session was perfect. Bonus of sleeping like a baby knowing we were all safe from the scourge of King Leopold.
"we were all safe from the scourge of King Leopold." - hahahahahahahaahahah
How do you get this game?
Link to download is in description.
Cost: 20 bucks for any visit regardless of test. Oh yeah, that’s Europe. But agree, would be educational for us😀
Good tip for the stickers. This is one the main reasons why I dislike these kinds of paragraph / choice driven campaign games. No one can ever seem to get them right, and there are always too many errors that stymie progression. When playing these kinds of games and you come to an issue, you never really know if you’ve missed something and it’s your fault, or if the game is just bugged. In a non-campaign game it doesn’t matter because you can just keep going.
It is a minor miracle that any of these giant games can create even a semblance of balance and order with all the interacting parts and gears and different orders the players can encounter things. But on the other hand it's the potential to be involved in real narrative storylines that is so appealing to me.
@@COOPFORTWOyeah. I can’t even comprehend how games like this are designed. So many moving parts and overlapping mechanisms.
My wife/co-investigator have just finished murder of a millionaire and really enjoyed it. Thought it was very well done. Had so many aha moments throughout once we figured out the email password it made it easier for us to figure it out. The next two cases we doing next is merivale manor and market hill. Straight in at the deep end but we are happy to jump in and solve the case
What are these cameras your using, the quality is very nice!
I've played similar games before with a long scenario book, and once I completed a scenario, there will be no reason to play it again in the future because I already know the answer of the questions. I'm wondering if this game has the same problem. I saw there are bunch of cards can be drawn, so if this game is not re-playable, are those cards that I haven't seen in the first time playing wasted?
This game is a one-time play only. There will only be a few cards you haven't seen and you will end the case learning what happened. No possibility for replay. That's just the nature of these games. But nothing is destroyed so you can resell or trade it afterwards.
Eager to get a copy, hasn't been in stock on Amazon for a while
I’ve never heard about cryptic killer, I’ll put it on my list.
This case had a bit of a cabin fever atmosphere which I enjoyed.
Quite right. As a side note I realized that in my focus on being spoiler-free I neglected to say ANYTHING about the theme, setting, story.. I realized after filming this how out of practice I am recording reviews. In the future I need to provide a little more information about the background to the case.
And if you like the setting for this case, check out Death in Antarctica case from IdVenture/MurderMysteryParty.
finger print cards vs finger print booklet?
Thank you so much for uploading!!! You helped us out BIG time🎉
I can’t generally do live streams, but I do like this format! I’d appreciate if there were links to the games mentioned in the description, as someone else mentioned, with a timestamp link to see that section of the video (in case I want to check out one in particular and don’t have 2 hrs for the whole video at the moment). But thanks for the content that you create! As someone getting into the genre, I’d love more “roundup” type videos too, sharing your favorites, or ranking/comparing similar types of games. I find the hardest part is knowing which to try next :)
SPOILERS Just finished watching the streams: I thought you detectives smashed it out of the park on this one. Particularly impressed by how quickly the realisations came that you were being framed, and that there could be a gem hidden in the sidecar. I did laugh about how suspicious you were of Very Famous Formula 1 Drivers. Poor Alberto Ascari.
Your videos have been really great for helping me make sure I'm not missing anything. So interesting to see the differences between your edition and the 2023.
If you notice any interesting differences I'd love to hear about them.
Did the newer version fix the printing issues
I believe so.
@COOPFORTWO you should check out thier pop up haunted mansion murder mystery doomension its called if you have not. I had gotten it its very unique compard to alot 9f these things
Today, I am starting to play Gumshoe after watching your reviews (I am very excited!) I got my hands on a second edition copy. It’s nice to watch the beginning of this playthrough. After completing day 1 on my own, I will come back to see how different we played and to hear your thoughts. Really appreciate this channel:)
Awesome! Here is the video I made with advice: ruclips.net/video/9flPzG4l23Y/видео.html I'd love to hear what you thought of the game after you finish it. -jesse
Great review. The one thing I'm not sure was mentioned is as far as I could tell this case was standalone. So if the theme of this one appeals more to you, you don't have to worry about playing Houston 2015 first.
I think I'm in love with the Fortune Teller's Hut right off the bat. An elegant solution for a more-often-than-notish bubble burster moment. Thanks!
It made the game MUCH more enjoyable for me.
I was furious with the solution to Wings of Vengeance too. Almost literally every other character had a better-established motive and was better placed to kill Sanders...
Crazy, right?
@@COOPFORTWO My other half and I were playing together and we were floored when we read the solution. We had concocted an elaborate theory that seemed to fit perfectly with another character in terms of motive, opportunity, and method. The character named in the solution just doesn't fit, as you point out in your review. Ah, well... at least I can say we finished the game and I can give it to someone else so that they can enjoy the same frustration we did. Haha 😀
@@jamesrichards2276 The subsequent Suspects boxes get progressively better.
@@COOPFORTWO Oh! I didn't realise that they'd produced more. I'll have to look into that - thanks.
Quick spoiler-free mini-review: I see from the reviews on bgg that some people did not enjoy this game. For me personally, this was a bit of a magical game. The art, the text, the literary connections, the playfullness, the breaking of the fourth wall, the tension. To me it all combined to create something more than the sum of its parts, and it felt like at the end it had elevated the board game art form. A real gem and a tremendous experience. I'm shocked. The whole series far exceeded my expectations. I do think the combat elements of Time Stories Revolution are absolutely terrible and have no place here.. I hope in the next evolution of this system they will find a way to bring it in line with the rest of the mechanics. Other than that, what an adventure. Amazing. -jesse
Your very positive review has definitely whetted my appetite to get this game to the table as soon as space opens up (i.e. when I finish Masters of Crime: Rapture where I'm about half way through). I already own Guilty: Monaco 1955. I was a huge fan of Guilty: Houston 2015, and this sounds even better to me. I don't get frustrated easily when suggested solutions fall a little short of the mark --- and my primary motivation is "to go along for the ride" when there is a well-written narrative that is woven throughout the mystery, although I do try my utmost to successfully solve the case over a period of a couple of weeks through solo play. Your emphasis on the deft handling of the cinematic action and the subtleties of the new card combination system plus the historical flavour are all extremely appealing to me. I was a little worried when the Designer of this game some time ago made an oblique reference to Monaco 1955 being somewhat more elementary than the first entry into the Guilty series ---- but thankfully this does not appear to be the case based upon your review.
