Building a New Home Ep. 1 - Exterior Plans
Let's begin with a quick overview of the initial plans for the front exterior of the new home. We have lots of earth-work to do including excavation and grading, and loads of hardscaping including path building, step building and retaining wall building. We even want to put in some low-voltage landscape lighting while we're at it. This front area of the home will be the easiest to do this work on currently, and should not impact future construction of the home.

Building a Timber Frame Shed Part 7 - Installing Cedar Siding
Просмотров 1,1 тыс.5 месяцев назад
Here we install the cedar siding that we reclaimed from another job-site. This cedar has been cleaned up and milled with a double groove edge profile to accept floating tongues. The siding is varying widths and thicknesses. After installed, the siding gets torched (Sou sugi bahn/yaki sugi).

Here we prepare the shed siding from reclaimed cedar. First we must finish the stone foundation and install Corten A606 weathering steel as our water table flashing. This flashing gets scribed to the irregular stone below and establishes a clean straight edge to run our vertical siding down into.

In this video we begin our next project of constructing this timber frame storage shed. The Douglas Fir frame will be scribed to foundation stones that are wet anchored on 4' deep concrete columns. Here, we begin site prep and lay these 7 foundational stones. Ultimately this structure will be clad in cedar siding, have a cedar soffit, with a standing seam metal roof. The structure will have ele...

We recently purchased a couple pieces of heavy equipment. We imported a mid-sized tracked carrier from Japan, A 2015 Yanmar C30R. This unit weighs in at 2,650Kg (5,843lbs) and can carry 2,500Kg (5,513lbs). We also purchased a 2023 Takeuchi TB260 weighing in at 5,736Kg (12,645lbs). These machines are completely life-changing for us as builders.

      Thanks for watching! I wish I had an answer for you. Not sure the type of rock, but they were selected for their color and the lichen growing on them. They are very hard, definitely not limestone or sandstone, but they definitely aren't granite either.

    Kick back on the jointer or snagging your sleeve would have cost you dearly. After 20 years of using a tablesaw with no major incidents, I did something stupid that I had gotten away with a hundred times before. This time it cost me damage to a thumb and 3 fingers, none of which have feeling in the ends anymore. Use the safety equipment and always maintain a healthy respect/fear for power tools. The damage they will do to you lasts for the rest of your life. Otherwise, enjoy your craft and keep up the good work.

    What's the overall dimensions of the structure? Also, what size timber did you use for the posts as it looks elegant and slimmer than the typical 8x8.

    • @JBrosBuilt
      @JBrosBuilt 5 месяцев назад

      10' x 16'. Posts are 6x6, this was the correct size for the scale of the structure. One of the most important components of timber framing in our opinion is scale.

    Why spline vs tongue and groove siding?

    • @JBrosBuilt
      @JBrosBuilt 5 месяцев назад

      This is all reclaimed cedar, collected over years from job sites. We wanted to maximize the width of each board and use up all the cut offs as splines. When you mill a tongue, you loose a little visible width on each board, which adds up. Basically this was an extremely efficient way to use all the cedar we had on hand without having to purchase anything.
