Stories that are in the same genre are bound to share terminology and concepts, in copyright terms youll be completely okay i believe, but if you wnat to make your story more original id say focus more on world building and subverting some of the concepts you have right now along with drawing inspirations from similar books that have concepts youre interested in

I disagree, the final result was so cool looking to me! I’m wondering how to do this experiment myself, bc when I color pick in Procreate on my iPad it just picks the gray version that shows on the screen, and I have to actually turn it back to color just to pick the color 😭

I’m glad you liked it! This is how I did the challenges. You actually have to change the color filter on your device. For Apple products, you’re going to go into settings and type ‘color filter’ into the search bar. Then, click the only option that comes up and scroll all the way to the bottom to where it says ‘Color filters’ and it should be labeled as off. Select that menu and it should take you to a screen showing a bunch of colored pencils. Toggle that switch on and your whole screen will be in greyscale! Hope this helps!

After going down a worldbuilding rabbit hole for the past few hours seeing something like this is kind of refreshing. Just saying this to help your sanity as I tell this to anyone who does writing (and to myself). You should write for yourself. Always. About yourself, about things you know and to tell stories that you want to tell. This should always be first and foremost. Whether the story is "good enough" or is able to "see the light of day" is something that comes after the first hurdle of actually putting pen on paper. Writing drafts and making ideas are two processes and both of them can be really fun! If you're worried about copyright/similarities then you can always ask for second opinion from the people around you. There are also so many other things to look at before even looking at originality of concept (tho that's still pretty important if you want to get published :')) Personally speaking? Despite no longer being in my potterhead phase (esp w all the things going on w the franchise and whatnot - I could go on a rant about how so many childhood franchises are getting pwned and it makes me sad) I would be happy to read your writing simply by the fact that you're so enthusiastic and happy about what you've made! Hearing people talk about things that they're excited about makes me happy :) I'll leave this last bit of the yapfest for words of encouragement. I hope whatever you decide to do with your piece is something that you'll be proud of and wishing the best of luck to your writing/drawing journey! If I manage to finish one of my many projects before this gets dropped I'll be disappointed (I never finish my work bahahaha)

I'm in the traditional publishing sphere, and we have these things called "comp titles". If you want an agent to read your pitch, you need to compare it to other successful works in your genre. I'm in the strange position of worrying that my books aren't SIMILAR ENOUGH to other books!

Yeah, not only is it not considered bad form/copycatting to describe your book as "Harry Potter meets Fullmetal Alchemist" (just an example), but it's something you NEED to do to get an agent's eyes on your work (although fair warning, I've heard that some agents are looking down on submissions that comp Harry Potter specifically, as a protest against JK Rowling, it's really not fair to the hundreds of nice people who have been inspired by HP like you, but it's just the way things are right now, it sucks.)

First: I love your story idea! It would definitely be something I’d have an obsession over and I find the world building really interesting! I would’ve took that book off the shelf and if you never mentioned in was inspired off Harry Potter I would’ve never guessed. I personally love magic academy’s since I grew up with Harry Potter and little witch academia! I would love to see how unique and fun the hierarchy school idea could be! And second: I’ve been also struggling with a story idea which I’ve barely started but I feel like I’m just writing toilet bound Hanako kun 2.0. The basic premise is that a girl named Charlotte who had grown up with a completely different childhood than her older sister. She was pampered and treated gently while her sister was subjected to harsh parenting and a rough childhood. She grew up knowing that she will never be as wise and knowledgeable as her sister since she never got the pain and experience her sister got. She became obsessed with being smart and knowledgeable but always fell short of the top student because of her low art grade. That all changed when she met the ghost of a young nun in training named Rosabella who was pushed down a well by a mysterious Jane Doe. The ghost was an amazing artist and she offered to help Charlotte with her art grade if she helped Rosabella pass on by helping her find the regret she had before dying. They also like fall in love lol. It’s good to know other people have been struggling with this mindset when it comes to writing. As someone who doesn’t have much writer friends it’s nice to know that I’m not the only one going through this.

Ok, I saw your comment a few days ago, sorry I'm just getting around to responding now. Unfortunately, I've never seen Hanako-Kun, but I'll try my very best based on the wiki description. Being honest, I don't feel like your story sounds very much like Hanako-kun at all. Again, I don't know the deep details of the anime, but based on what's described in the brief summary I read, the only similarity seems to be the human-spirit dynamic. From your description, the characters relationship is the main dynamic, while in Hanako-kun there is a bigger focus on the actual spirit world and it's correlation to ours. I think if you continue to focus on your characters' relationship as the main catalyst and keep away from adventures against evil spirits, then I think you will be ok. If the spirit world is a bigger catalyst in your story than I thought, then there's still things you can do. Mainly, portray and/or use it differently than Hanako-kun does. For example, both Legend of Zelda: Skyward Sword and Avatar: The Last Airbender have spirit realms, but they're used for different things and shown lightly differently. Skyward Sword's realm is a silent domain for testing the hero while ATLA uses the spirit realm to communicate with previous Avatars If I were you, I'd just write your story the way you want to and naturally, it should morph into it's own thing, though to me, it kind of already sounds like it's there. This is the best advice I can offer (Sorry, I haven't seen the show)

The story I'm currently writing about is one I plan on turning into an animated series of my own. The only issue with that is, even though I haven't necessarily gotten too deep into the plot and have just a rough idea, I am a little bit worried that the plot might be slightly too similar to the anime The Promised Neverland (which, granted, has been a huge inspiration to me). The basic story goes like this. There is a big scientific organization which has a secret project in which they are trying to do human testing to figure out if the 'soul' is connected to the brain and if it actually genuinely exists. Basically, the organization has designed this secret facility in which they keep almost a human farm area for the humans to live in. The story follows a group of a few children inside of the facility who are trying to figure out how to escape it and they're trying to figure out the truth of the facility and why the experiments are being performed (as it is never taught to them). So I'm js wondering if the story is too similar..? The characters are almost nothing alike in terms of ages, appearances, etc. However, I am still just wondering if it is possibly too similar to TPM??? 😭

    • @SekaixArtsAnimations-ox5di
      @SekaixArtsAnimations-ox5di Месяц назад

The story sounds interesting to me. Unfortunately, I've never seen The Promised Neverland, so all my knowledge comes from a brief Wikipedia summary To me, your story sounds like the only similarities are that the main group is children (which is not specific to The Promised Neverland) and that there is a bad organization experimenting on people. I don't know the nitty gritty details of your story, but to me, this seems like the skeleton of a genre, not a rip off of The Promised Neverland. Let me try to explain myself more clearly For example, let's compare Cardcaptor Sakura and Heartcatch Precure. Both of these are in the Magical Girl genre. Both Sakura and Tsubomi are shy, middle school girls. They both wear pink and they both get magical powers from tiny fairy creatures. They also both use pink magic wands to defeat the monster or problem for that episode. Even then, I would never say Cardcaptor Sakura ripped off HeartCatch Precure or vice versa. This is because wands, pink and powers are all part of the Magical Girl genre and, therefore, pretty much every Magical girl show has one of or all of these elements But back to your story. To me, it sounds like a science fiction and horror story. Normally, when these two genres collide, the premise ends up being human experimentation, and then, to make the plot interesting, the main characters realizing the corruption and trying to escape or stop the big bad guys. When I read the premise of The Promised Neverland, I had felt like I had heard about this story before. Not in a bad way, though. It still sounded interesting, but I was not blow away by the originality. In fact, the first thing I though was "Wow this kinda sounds like if the game Kindergarten was set in a fantasy world" In the end, I think it's all gonna come down to how you portray it. If you market and style it the same as The Promised Neverland, then comparisons will be drawn. Then again, all work is derivative. If you look at the Wiki page of Promised Neverland, the creator himself said he was inspired by Final Fantasy and Hansel and Gretel. I feel also that intention has a lot to do with it. A lot of things that get hate for being a "ripoff" is because the creator made it with the intention of trying to leech off a successful franchise, and it shows in the poor quality of the story and world. If you love your story and write it with that love, then it will be great, and most people won't care if it's similar because they enjoy a good story Sorry for the essay. I didn't mean for this comment to be this long. I hope it's helpful though!

Her : is my story too much like HP ?? Me : 6:05 the Law of Cycle ? Madoka Kaname ?? Serious comment : this is also something I struggled with as a writer. Because obviously you're inspired by what you like. I can also write a comparison that will make it look like my story is just like Kill la Kill, Divergent (which I actually hate) or Deltarune. Apparently, there's a lot of similarities with Psychopass, which I then pruposely didn't watch to not get inspired, contrarly to Heathers, which I purposely watched to get inspired, but probably noone would any similarity with my story. I think the key is to be inspired by multiple very different things. You can't control what you'll be inspired by but you can control what you watch/read/play. Yes, my story takes elements from a lot of other works and so in turn, there's hardly any one overarching inspiration. So my first tip is to get inspired by more than one thing. As you said, as you write, your characters become themselves, and stray away from their original inspiration. Sometimes, even subtle changes in theme and style can make a BIG difference between 2 similar plots (Ring of Power vs Frieren). Frieren is a completly different approach to the very classic high fantasy. Tbh I feel like "the feeling" of something is more important than the actual plotpoints. By having a different vibe, 2 stories with similarities will be very different. Meanwhile, a lot of shows are labelled "gravity falls rip-offs" because despite their different plots, they alledgedly want to emulate the same feeling (I haven't watch any of these so idk). It might not be obvious to detect, but at some point, your story gets its own identity and that's what's important. Also, there's so much existing works. It's like trying to avoid cliches. "oh, that's a cliche, I should do the opposite... Oh... the opposite is also a cliche, damn." Everything is a cliche at this point, especially when it comes to characters. I don't think you should fear the copyright hammer, with all the japanese isekais that are all the same, a few similarities won't do anything. Also, my highschool chemestry teacher actually wrote a HP-like book series. I haven't read them. But, apparently, it was the same vibe. So, I don't think you should worry. PS: good quality videos, how tf do you have less subs than me ??

At the end of the day, fiction is always gonna be informed by other fiction, intentionally or not. The mere idea of a special magical school or hidden magical worlds are definitely not new, and while the Harry Potter comparisons will inevitability be drawn... I feel like most people in your target audience wont care or take it that seriously. Even from what little you’ve described with the world and characters involved the vibe feels completely different, and as a Br*tish "person" I feel like that setting was a big part of what tied the original together, so not having that influence is going to inherently change the feeling of the story just a little bit. All that said, please make this story, your artstyle is gorgeous and I'm sure whatever you make will be fantastic. I also completely sympathise with your frustration with book 5 lmao. It really feels like editorial went hands off as time went on and massively regretted it in the long run. Its easily like 200 pages longer than it needed to be.

I'd say... Considering that you seem to have given this A LOT more thought about this than JK Rowling herself... (Who actually isn't really that "original" herself, not that "originality" ultimately matters...look up both "A Wizard of Earthsea" and "The Worst Witch" to name a few examples.) Assuming your work doesn't have JK Rowling's hints of transphobia, anti-Semitism, and/or racism... (She outed herself as a transphobe back in 2019 and has kept going downhill ever since, now also saying she likes the book Lolita... Yes THAT one about the adult man who grooms and abuses a little girl, and describes it as a "tragic love story". So, now I can add "'pdf-file'/nonce supporter" of Rowling's "sins". 🤮) I'd say your work would even SURPASS hers! ^_^b

first: ALL work is derivative, if you look deep down enough second: sounds cool, yeah! and third: you can always change terms or things enough that it wont be a problem. the important part is the structure and actual story, so if you change superficial things it wont matter, since the story YOU want to tell is unchanged. and lastly, you never know until you try, and you'll most likely never succeed before you fail. so the only real thing left is to try. this first step of getting your idea out there to an audience is the first and really commendable step! Cheers and keep it up, you got this!

you'll advance so FAST with this mentality! even faster if you manage to "not care" about the result since its practice after all not a finished piece. and from what ive gathered, more, quicker, and directed drawings are better than single, slower refined pieces to practice. since you want to practice only the thing you are practicing (in this case differences between male and female) ive had this problem many times, luckily i have learned to give me some breathing room and i can practice longer and even have fun while doing it! also, something that has helped me a lot is merging practice with what i want to do, put characters in hard perspectives, on colorful scenes, emphasizing the part of the body im practicing on the composition, etc. keep up the good work, cheers!

You are going to advance SO FAST with that mentality. if you can get to not care about the results you ll advance EVEN faster. because the result is not important, whats important is that you learn something from drawing it, even if its just a tiny bit of experience! its the reason they say doing several "quick" drawings as practices is better than losing hours and hours on one, since in this aspect volume beats quality (because you are practicing to achieve a quality level you dont have). i`ve had this struggle with many things, but upon convincing myself that its IMPOSSIBLE to do everything perfect, EVER, and specially on first-ish tries. its like a huge weight lifted from you and lets you practice more and sometimes even have fun while doing it ! keep up the great work!.

If you're wanting to draw men, I suggest starting with just basic real life studies (photos, screenshots, etc) However, I personally find it better to break up photo studies with some style studies as well. A good source for that might be to look at Bruce Timm, the guy behind the Batman animated series character designs. It's an exaggerated style but it helps to understand what is and isnt necessary to detail in representing male or female Otherwise, have fun with it. It gets better when you compare say the 10th or 20th sketch to the first few and see some actual progress

YOU SHOULD TOTALLY GO FOR IT!!!! Seriously, if I saw your story at any book store, I would buy it, NO hesitation!!! The magic system and lore is fascinating, and there's enough of your own elements that I wouldn't see it as any sort of ripoff.

I’m not sure I can help with your problem as I don’t think I’m your target demographic but I can relate to the struggle. Even as a fan fiction writer I have the urge to make things more original and make sure I’m striking that perfect balance of creative yet recognizable.

All these redesigns are real nice, I really like your work But I do have a gripe, super minor nitpick nothing wrong with the design In the Dori redesign (I actually really love this one), her headwear is super vacuumed sealed on her head and her head looks kinda flat because it looks like you drew over her head outline base Realistically (I didn’t want to say that I just can’t think of anything else) her headwear would hover a little over her head (not literally) Think like a sandwich (?) n layers Think her head, hair, then whatever goes on her head. It goes on top so you’d see it a little, if that makes sense Anyways just a super minor nitpick I really love the Dori design and the reasoning And also correct me if I am wrong about anything

Thanks for the constructive criticism. You're right, it shouldn't lay so flatly on her head, especially given how fluffy her hair underneath is

I wouldn't go with lolita just because it's a little too childish, but I would want to keep her mature. I would prefer some of the colors though you have in your design. I think it would've been awesome if they took ideas from way back when Avon or Mary Kay started out as companies for women to sell products such as perfumes.

That makes sense. I did think about doing a design based off her lavender tall-female design instead, but I ultimately went for the other concepts. I did really like the idea of a more mature Emilie though
