Tyson was too short to be an effective heavyweight in the long run. One can only use the peek-a-boo and crouch low for so long. It is a very demanding style and requires constant training. Therefore, as Tyson got older it became less effective, which is why he went more for big hits and opened himself up. Once much bigger heavyweights figured out how to fight him, like Douglas, Lewis, Williams, McBride etc.. he was finished. Lewis' style was almost effortless. He used his superior reach to keep Tyson away with effective jabs, and then used thunderous hooks to put him away. Lewis was much smarter than the 2nd tier heavyweights Tyson faced early in his career. Even if they fought in the mid-90's Lewis would have won, but in even more crushing fashion (they are the same age). Look how easily Lewis negated the power of David Tua, who is the same height as Tyson. Lewis would easily sway back every time Tua went for a big punch, and then used his jab to keep him away. Had Tyson lost some weight and fought in the light heavyweight division he would have had more staying power and been champion longer.
